why even partition. The TM backup is one file, one icon. It wouldn't get in the way of your other stuff on the drive.

damn it! Now I don't know if I should buy an AEBS and just attach an existing HD or go all out and get a TC!

It's too l8t for me... mine TC is already ordered 2 week ago. I had no chose 2 weeks ago.

But i think it's great that you can use AEBS to TM now. Specially if you have a 1T HD laying around, or a owner of the AEBS :)

Just curious: Where exactly had Apple "advertised" this feature? Could we make that clear, once and for all?

I believe it was listed on the post WWDC 2007 Leopard page, but later vanished. That page also contained the text stating that any features are subject to change before release, or words to that effect.

But loads of people went out and bought AirPort Extremes and hard drives and then it didn't work, 6 months of moaning later and we get a result!

and i refuse to believe AEBS or airport express + a USB drive equals all functionality of a TC. Surely they arent earning on the drives in TC. That would just make the product redundant.thats soo not steve or apple!!

It's not really that much more for TC than an Airport Extreme + External Drive, especially considering it's all in one neat package. And that is exactly why it's marked up on price, because it :apple:looks:apple: nice ;)

How do you backup several computers?

After you connect the HD to the AEBS and format it using Time Machine on one computer, do you then just run Time Machine from your other computers and it will create the separate backups on that same HD without any special configuration?

Thanks.

The best friend of Time Machine is a FireWire drive. Not a USB drive. USB drives are not only slower, but a mess and asking for trouble all the time.

Firmware update

G'day people

I noticed that after I downloaded and installed the update for the Airport Extreme, that when I ran the Airport Utility it told me that there's a new FirmWare update for the AEBS that needed to be downloaded.

That may be why some people have not been able to get the time machine to back up to external hard drive directly attached to the AEBS because they haven't installed the latest firmware?

Just a thought.
Cheers
Al

For Apple's sake, I certainly hope that Apple is charging a "nominal fee" in accordance with "standard accounting procedures" for adding this wholly new feature that did not exist when the product was originally delivered to the customer. I really wouldn't want them to risk running afoul of SOX.

Time Machine does not work with Account Management on the AEBS, does it?
I want my backups to be password protected.

Steve Jobs announced regarding Time Machine at WWDC in June 2007 that you can use an external drive connected to a Mac or to an Airport Extreme. You can find this fact on the keynote video or on liveblogs that covered the event. Following the event Apple advertised this as a feature to the Time Machine. This feature was removed from advertising sometime close or following to the Leopard's launch.

Still don't believe it? Watch the keynote here in case they forgot to edit that part out: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/wwdc07/

I didn't check the video, for I am not "in the belief" so I don't have to prove this fact to myself again...

I connected USB drive to AEBS first, started time machine backup. Was hella slow....stopped TM....disconnected USB drive....direct connected....TM started right up and continued archiving to the same sparse image that I had interrupted.
Once backup is done, I will reconnect to AEBS and hopefully all is well. I'll let u know.
If that doesn't work, FYI doing the initial backup via gigabit is reasonably fast (not as quick as USB, but much faster than wireless).

I just bought a Time Capsule a week ago. I already had a 500GB USB hdd so I probably would've just gotten an Airport Extreme if I'd known this functionality was just around the corner (I knew it was supposed to be coming, but I got sick of waiting).

But it's really no big deal... the all-in-one solution is slick, the hdd in the Time Capsule is easy to upgrade, and overall I'm glad to see that Apple added this functionality (for the sake of all those people already with Airport Extremes). Also, the Apple store only charged $269 for Time Capsule (they didn't know the educational price was normally $279 and instead took 10% off) so I can't complain.

This is good. At least there is the option that Apple promised when they were first promoting Time Machine.

How can I make a Time Machine Backup into a User Specific folder?
It works with the TimeCapsule but not with the Airport Extreme. :(

As soon as I turn on Account Management no volume appears in TM even if it is mounted.

Good, now all the people that jumped the gun and ran out and bought an Airport Extreme before Leopard officially launched and was disappointed to find out that "subject to change without notice" also applied to software can now officially chill out.

There seems to be some confusion on how to enable so here are the steps hope they help someone out there out:

1.If you have a disk already plugged into your AEBS it may or may not work. I suggest you start by going to your System Preferences, Time Machine and see if your Airport Disk shows up. If it does then sweet you are all set!

2. Assuming it does not show up first open finder and attempt to browse your Airport disk, once you have opened a folder on it go back to the System Preferences, Time Machine and see if it shows up. If not proceed to step 3.

3. If you are like me it still wasn’t showing up. The steps were to first backup the files on your “AirDisk” to some other safe location. Then plug the USB drive into your Mac, open disk utility and format it “Mac OS Journaled” hook it back up to your AEBS. Open finder and browse the AirDisk, then proceed to System Preferences, Time Machine and you should be good to go!

Woo Hoo!!!! #2 did it for me. THANK YOU!!!

I'm glad to hear the HDD can be replaced. But to be honest: after reading through the guide I won't call that "easy to upgrade". Sure, it depends on your "skills" and doesn't look impossible. I'm even sure I would be ABLE to replace the drive.... I just wouldn't WANT to. So I'll probably stick with AE + ext. HDD, even though TC is of course the "nicer" solution.

So can you connect an external hard drive that's been partitioned (one half for time machine and the other half for personal files), and be able to use Time Machine with just the time machine partition and still be able to access the second partition for files?

Because TM will use the entire drive if you let it. Some people (myself included) would like to use the drive to store extra stuff.

I have my network drive partitioned 3 ways; one for my backup, one for my girlfriends backup and a third that is for extra stuff.

About bloody time!

I can't understand people are going "wow!" over this feature that was promised such a long time ago. I guess you will all go "wow, Apple gave us this awesome feature called disk mode" if they chose to do that in ine the Touch and iPhone. It should have been there from the get-go.

At 1 minutes 3 seconds.

Why people try this revisionism and pretend Apple never promised such a feature is beyond me.
