Time Capsule is slow as hell...yes I'd love to have my system "back up" within a 3-4 day window...

Airport Extreme and USB drive...it still sucks. I have 13,000+ itunes songs and 100+ m4v files on my external drive as well...syncing music and movies was horrible...hit and miss most of the time.

When I hook the same drive up to my iMac everything works flawlessly. Don't get me wrong, I do love my Airport Extreme but not for iTunes music or backups. I use it to share information across my home network, that's it!

Time Capsule is just another Apple marketing conspiracy that the "Apple Tree Huggers" love and that most hate.

It's that initial back up that's the killer. Once done the hourly back ups should be ok I would imagine. Has anyone tested to see if the initial back up done via FireWire can be used once the drive is relocated to the AE? There must be a hack ... when I try this TM simply initiates a new initial back up all over again!

You've got to be freakin' kidding me! I bought an AEBS in December for this sole purpose only to find out that it didn't work that way. So I deal with it for a few months knowing the Time Capsule is coming out.

Monday of this week I buy a 1TB Time Capsule and then 2 days later find out that a patch has been released and that my old configuration would have worked for a heckuva a lot cheaper!

GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!! :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Before the 7.3.1 update it took me 4 hours (over gig-ethernet) to move 100GB of data to/from the drive. After 7.3.1 that time HALVED itself. There are a ton of folks stating something got done because the speed is considerably quicker.

USB Drive Sharing on Airport Express??

Kinda off topic, but I'm about to purchase an external USB Drive for my MacBook Pro and I have an Airport Express router (old G-type). Can this be used with the USB port on the Express as a wireless drive? Not for Time Machine, just as a storage drive in general. That would rule, especially if I can offload my iTunes library to that thing to free the space on my internal MacBook Pro HD which is almost full.

Many Thanks,

Simmer down. So far I can't get AEBS+AirDisk to allow more than the originating computer (the one you formatted the drive for use on) to work with Time Machine w/ airdisk. Not sure if this is intended or not. Time Capsule doesn't have this 'problem'

1) The bad guy breaks in to steal all your computer goodies and sees your expensive desktop computer and takes it, along with the easy to carry attached hard disk. Your backups are now gone also.

2) The bad guy breaks in to steal all your computer goodies and sees your expensive desktop computer and takes it, but your back up HD, attached to an AEBS, is buried in a closest or behind your desk or under your dirty gym clothes, completely out of sight to said bad guy. Your computer is gone, but your wireless backup system and your non-insurance covered data, stays.

Excellent point. Perhaps putting AE and Drive in the Attic would be better in case the bad guy works out a lot and needs gym gear too!

At least for me it was a no go on backing up first with firewire. I'd already been doing that to my external HD for the last several months. When I loaded the new firmware, it didn't recognize the old backup and told me that I needed 40+GB to back up my HD onto my 80GB partition (which already had 40+ GB on it). I basically erased the partition and started over. Not that big of a deal to erase everything since I didn't need that archive, but a pain to have to do the initial back up again (which it is still doing after 10+ hours). My suggestion is to hook up your computer via ethernet to do the initial back up since it could take forever to do it wirelessly.

I'm sure that will be a 'patch' that comes out soon too. Plus I only plan on having one machine going forward.

What a waste. I sold my like new (3 month old) AEBS for $115 on Monday. I already have a 250GB NAS and a 250GB USB drive, so enabling them on my AEBS would have been perfect. Instead, I went out and bought a TC for $500 and have gained nothing for doing it.

Frustrating!!!!

You gained drive space. Hook up your USB drive and NAS to the TC and now you have another 500GB on top of your 1TB ;)

Has anyone tried it with a NAS? I'm not home so I can't check it myself. Otherwise I will stop on the way home and get a usb hard drive for my aebs.

Any suggestions on which one?

Question

As the owner or a MacBook Air, I must say -- this is great news.

One question about this for you experts out there...

I currently have two HDs connected to my Extreme Base Station (via USB HUB). One of them is for Time Machine backups (which is working properly), and the other contains my iTunes library (I keep it on an Air Disk to save room on my tiny internal hard drive).

The thing I'm worried about is the possibility of the drive containing my iTunes library failing. Is there a way of having my Time Machine drive include the Air Disk iTunes drive in the backup? So far as I can tell, this isn't possible when they're both connected to the base station.

Thanks, friends!

Ive been thinking about buying a new router that supports Wireless N. Whats the main benefit of buying a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme over a Netgear/Linksys/DLink router?

damn it! Now I don't know if I should buy an AEBS and just attach an existing HD or go all out and get a TC!

If you have an xbox 360 with the wireless adapter, you may want to wait before getting TC...It won't connect!!

AEBS works tho...I upgraded my AEBS to TC and sold the AEBS...now I can't connect to my 360!!!!!

Reading the messages here, I'm not sure there is enough evidence to warrant a front page post claiming that TM works over AirDisk now....

Damn,

That is great news for everyone who did not buy TC.

Unfortunately, I received mine yesterday. I would be happy with my Buffalo HD and old AEBS. Now I have to figure out What to do with AEBS!! any suggestions?

:D

Sounds like a case of PEBKAC.

No one's mentioning the firmware update for the AEBS. I'm not at my machine to confirm it but posters on AppleInsider say there's one.

Read before posting? It was mentioned.

I would appreciate somebody's help.......

I had an AEBS and existing wireless network. I ran the Leopard update last night and figured I'd run the Airport Utility update this morning. After updating the firmware, I have to choose one of the following. I'm assuming I choose "I have an existing....." which is the one that's checked?

question

anyone know if an external usb HD plugged into the back of TC will work with time machine?

for example, we have the 1TB TC to back up our 1TB imac. but with our macbook, we'd like to back that up with our external and am wondering if we'd be able to do that if it were plugged into the back of the TC. i guess i'll just try it (though my wife is at a conference with the macbook until monday, so i can't try it until then), but wondering if there was anyone with any knowledge on the subject.

i'm guessing that yeah, if the AEBS is not running your network but extending it or bridging it, you'd need to click the "I have an exisiting"

Why are you mad? Apple screwed you once, why buy another product from them? If enough people quit buying Apple products because of the way they abuse their loyal base Apple would change. As it is, you just reinforced to Apple that they did the right thing by going out and buying a TC.
