I have a neighbour who was having lots of problems with El Capitan, including Safari and other OS X applications that wouldn't open. We backed up his computer using Time Machine on a Time Capsule, and did a clean install of El Capitan.

The computer works fine now, but we now don't have access to any of the files on Time Machine before the clean install. Can I assume that this is a problem relating to the computer name? I figured that we would have automatic access to Time Machine, but it won't let us browse back in time before the date of the clean install.

Do we need to rename the computer, or change one of the computer profile names? I was helping him because I had more experience, but apparently not. ;)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't have to do a reinstall you could just use the free software EtreCheck and scan an manually delete old non-compatible files!
