If Android did all of this first how can the X set a new standard for phones to come - what a bizarre and meaningless statement by Time.

One can only assume it's either been written by TC or the writer got a freebie.

I don't see why this has to be painted as such a black and white issue. I switched to Android in late 2012 and still enjoy the innovations put up by the competition. Ranking a phone doesn't change the phone at all. It isn't much of a stretch to realize that people in one camp sometimes like to degrade the other and wish for their failure, but I wish that kind of rhetoric would decrease in popularity on these forums.

School playground rhetoric by people who haven't yet matured. Look at the OnePlus 5T released tomorrow. A cracking example of a smartphone with real flagship credentials. You could buy two and still have £100 left over when priced against the X.

I don't see anything sensible in paying way more than you need to in order to achieve the same things.

"Insane" is continuing to say that the iPhone and Apple Watch are "better" as if it's some factual statement of truth.
Forget Apple. Calling the Switch the best gaming console EVER "by far" is an insane statement.

It's better at both playing games (actual buttons and analog sticks) and game library (Zelda, Mario, Metroid etc.).
The iPhone X can play games, is completely portable, has a better screen, and can do 4329579843 other things.

It's arguably the most revolutionary console in concept, competing really with perhaps the Wii and the original Nintendo (which was a giant leap forward over Atari and similar systems). And that's the essence of what we are talking about.

And in my opinion, comparing games on the Switch versus the iPhone isn't even close. "Completely portable" is actually a downside for the iPhone, not a positive. The versatility of the Switch is what makes it so cool--and largely negates your screen argument. A large, quality TV is unquestionably more enjoyable than a small screen. And let's not forget that the iPhone is over 3 times as expensive.

Obviously I'm not going to convince you. You've got your heart set on the Apple products. But there's a reason why TIME picked the Switch, and why so many people (including many in this thread on an Apple site) agree with that pick.

Either way, it comes down to opinions. You'll notice how many people like me responded to your initial post. The reason is that you declared the Apple products were superior as some sort of fact. If you'd simply framed that as an opinion, there wouldn't be so much pushback.

Ridiculous response.
If you don't know who ArtOfWarfare is you ain't been around these boards long and perhaps should take a back seat.
LOLOL, man I don't care about message board glory. A ridiculous statement was made.

I got a warning for saying it's insane for the "switch is the best console gaming system EVER". LOL, be careful. I asked the age of a person who would state such a thing. It has be very very young. But I guess snowflakes are falling early this year.

The Nintendo Switch is easily the best gaming device that has ever existed.

Since getting it, I never bother with games on my iPhone anymore. The Switch has vastly better games on it and is only slightly less portable.

I think it's major competition with the iPod Touch and iPad at least, since a lot of those are given to children as game devices, and at least competes with the Games category on the App Store for the iPhone.

I think Apple is likely to feel some pain from it - I'm curious if they'll respond. Really all they need to do is create something like the Joycons and Grip that works with iOS devices, and require games to support them.

This is true... I love the Switch after buying it at launch. The games are much higher quality than anything you will get on a smartphone or tablet.

A warning for what from whom?

Anyway, just on the topic of gaming, anyone who said the Switch is best all time WAS NOT around for original Nintendo. THAT changed the game forever. And Playstation 1? That was insanely good. PS2 was maybe even better. Even the original Atari changed the world of gaming FAR more than this Switch. The Game Boy was incredible..

The Switch is cool, but it hasn't revolutionized gaming as we know it. The first consoles did that. We've already had console gaming and portable gaming. The switch just marries those two...cool, not amazing. I had a laptop I could game on and connect to a larger screen...

I like the iPhone X, its just too expensive. iPhone 8 is a much better deal. I was at the Apple store last night, and overheard the associate blatantly over selling the X over the iPhone 8 to a lady. I felt kinda bad, since the iPhone 8 is likely all she really needs.

The iPhone is WAY more than 3X the machine though.

Again, this isn't even about Apple products. My heart isn't set on anything Apple. COMPLETELY forget Apple. I'm telling you the Switch isn't even the most revolutionary product NINTENDO has ever come out with, let alone the entire gaming world. Calling it the by far the best gaming system ever released is absolutely ridiculous and shows no respect to the other incredible systems released over the years.

Well, article is moot due to claiming "Nintendo Switch, which it says is a "true knockout" thanks to its games library"

I mean aside from Zelda, Splatoon and Mario Galaxy, the "library" of games for Switch is pretty mediocre of any console release. Switch is not even on par with Wii sales after one year. Play through any of those games in a few weeks and you are left with something that doesn't even work well as a tablet and will collect dust faster then the Wii.

Based on this all other details of this article are suspect and more likely seems to be the top 10 things the writer bought this year.

The original Nintendo was a big leap forward with some awesome titles, but it was evolutionary too. The Ataris had buttons on the joystick controllers too, at least with the 5200. And yes, those 8-bit graphics looked great, but that really was the inevitable outcome of the maturing technology.

The Game Boy brought some flexibility, but it too had precursors. For over a decade there were portable palm-sized games.

The Wii has the strongest argument since it introduced a completely new way to interact in games.

I'm sure you would counter all this by saying "the Switch isn't revolutionary because it just gives you an either/or choice," and that's fine. We could argue over differences of opinion until the cows come home. But I would hope we could agree there's at least a reasonable argument to be made for the Switch, yes?

There isn't really a reasonable argument to call the Switch the best gaming console ever, which is where I took exception from the previous member.

Sure, the Switch should be on the 2017 list, but I don't think it's better than the X or the Watch for 2017 and CERTAINLY not the best console of all time. That is just laughable and by biggest issue here.

Like you said, the Switch is simply form factor options of stuff that has existed in better forms for years and years. The Atari was also better than the Switch. Nintendo DESTROYED Atari from a fun/ease of use/and titles perspective and probably has a top 3 game of all time, Mario. World 1-1 changed gaming.

I have finally had a chance to play with the iPhone X for a while at a local Best Buy.

I'll take some heat for saying it, but I am not super impressed. Yes, it's a nice phone. But it gets lost in the sea of bezel-less android options. There is nothing about the iPhone X that creates that "I've got have one of these" feeling. In the past, that's pretty much how I would respond. Not this time...

Things I liked about it:

iOS
Overall size relative to screen size
Display quality
Quick and smooth. This thing clearly packs a punch.

Things I didn't care about:

Navigation
Lack of TouchID
The notch
Price

Prior to seeing it, I was wondering if picking up the 8 Plus was the right call. Now that I had a chance to experience the X, I believe I made the right choice for me. The size of the phone/screen is really the biggest draw. The 8 Plus felt much larger overall and maybe a little heavier. But, I still get iOS, same internals (minus the dual camera stabilization and FaceID), still awesome display and I avoid all the negatives and get to keep TouchID.

I guess this goes to show that buying a phone is a very personal choice. There is no right or wrong answer. We get what works for us. I hope no one here who is a fan of the X gets offended. If you love it, great. It's just not for me...yet. Next year things may be different.

Those things also apply to the iPhone X though, not much is revolutionary nowadays in terms of gadgets and the iPhone X is just another iPhone really, there's nothing it does particularly different (or even better) than an iPhone 6/7/8/SE aside from slightly improved screen/body ratio...

Like I said, FaceID (even 1.0) is very cool and the A11 is a beast. A true marvel for mobile processing. Say what you want about iOS11 taking advantage of it or Apps not being ready for it, but I believe that will happen and the A11 will be ready.

Facial recognition wasnt Really used mainstream. That might change now

Apple will make sure that happens, by removing everything else and leaving you only one path, take it or leave it. There are still consumers that don't follow the status quo imposed by Apple.

We've come to an existential crisis in gadgetry. Other than the drone (#4), all of the other products are just variations on the same feature set, only differing in form factor, and which of those features they choose to optimize.

It has more prestige than a youtube video and a heck of a lot more credibility.
Prestige is what you get when someone cares about some else's opinion. Time is created by producers who follow instructions from above. We all know who they are. Youtube content is often created by independent individuals with no agendas.

Time = what is being taught in school (lies/disinformation).
Youtube = a mix.

I think I'll choose #2.

You can keep your Time magazines on your coffee table so that when your friends come over it looks like you're well informed.

Holy cow. Seriously??? The entire economy operates off of what is "taught in school."

And that's why people with more education make more money on average. This is a clear, substantial, and statistically significant relationship.

If schools taught "lies and disinformation" then this would fall apart. Economics is often referred to as the invisible hand. It's operated in the same way for centuries, long before modern institutionalized schooling existed.

Good grief.

I thought the same, until I got myself a X, and Have used it for the last couple of weeks. Works better and feels like the security is gone, because of that...

You are right about prestige, it is given but never taken.

Youtube has no prestige and no moral compass. Therefore opinions on youtube aren't worth the cost of the bits used to transmit the information.

Youtube is what is being taught in school these days. Time is what used to be taught. I'll take #2. I appreciate the metaphor. Never thought about it that way.

To each their own.
