FINALLY GOT TINYXP TO WORK ON MACBOOK PRO, HERE'S HOW:

All right so I am now posting from TinyXP Rev09 installed on my macbook pro. Its a little bit tricky but it can be done.

The main problem is that Boot Camp is an *******. When you use the boot camp assistant to partition the hard drive and start the installation the disc will either freeze at the tinyxp splash screen or you will get a disc error. However, if you have a regular copy of windows (still can be pirated, but just non-altered such as tinyxp) you can get it to work with a little swap trick.

So here's what to do:
Run the boot camp assistant from osx and hit start installation with your regular copy of windows inserted. With this it should start the DOS-like installation. When it gets to the choice of where to install windows you will see a boot camp partition. You need to format that partition to NTFS, but do not confuse formatting with deleting! Make sure you select the boot camp partition to install windows onto and when it asks if you would like to format choose NTFS. Afterwards it will copy a few files over and restart. Upon this restart hold the Option key and you will arrive at the boot screen. At this point switch the disc to your Tiny XP Rev 09 and boot from that disc. You will no longer get the disc read error or freeze at the splash screen. Continue to choose whichever version of the installation you like and it will goto that same windows DOS-like installer again. When prompted with the choice of where to install windows choose the boot camp partition once again. It will tell you that there is already a windows folder on the partition (from when it copied files over with the regular windows disc). Select the option to delete these files and install again. Now you will be installing from TinyXP and you should be completely unattended from here on out. Enjoy!

Did you ever have any problem having your Tiny XP CD mount? I'm using toast 8 to burn the TinyXP.iso file on a cd and once I reboot holding down the option key the CD does not show up. I did a partial install of Windows XP disk like you suggested but no mount of Tiny XP CD. Is there something obvious I'm missing when burning the .iso file?

It doesnt sound like you have burnt it as an actual image file, rather than just burning a cd. You can do it through disk utility as well.

Thanks for the help that was the problem; however, I have the same problem as half of the other post on here. I followed partial install instructions with previous xp disc, but no luck.

I was thinking of going out and buying some new CD's and see if that makes a difference.... I've tried the Memorex CD's & a DVD with same results.... Nothing like holding your breath to see that Error Booting message.

That error happens every now and again just clean the disc or do it a couple of times.

Tiny Xp works and I am using it now!

When doing bootcamp do your partition as normal then:
Using an orginal XP disc format the bootcamp partition to NTFS
Restart holding option
Swap XP disc for tiny XP
Install Tiny Xp
Joy and success

The only problem with that is Tiny XP was given to me from a friend. I don't have $200 Bucks to spend on normal XP and I can't seem to find anyone with a copy of it lying around!!

I may or may not have aquired it from certain website using a certain method of downloading;) Pm me I'll see if i can find the link. And you can get OEM XP discs on ebay for £60.

i got an OEM copy of XP Pro on ebay for £40, legit ... it's not like you can't pick them up anyway as lots of vendors have locked onto the fact that people hate Vista and want a better (Windows) OS

I'm struggling to install XP on my Mac Mini.

I'm at the blue screen where the Windows installer (original Windows XP disc) aks me to hit enter to proceed. But it won't recognize my wireless Apple keyboard and doesn't see the USB MacAlley keyboard either. What to do? I wanna do the switcharoo thing to install TinyXP after the original CD has done its formating and rebooting.

If I boot from the TinyXP disc, I get the

Same here, i bought a used USB keyboard (so I can hit enter whan windows installer asks to format the drive), then inserted the TinyXP disc when it rebooted. I get

I even burnt a TinyXP CD at the slowest possible speed and on the same Mac I want to install it on...

Could be the brand of disk you are using? try different ones. I only had the error problem a couple of times, I just had to take out and clean the disk. I can assure you the installation woorks (using it right now lol).

Ok, perhaps I've got a different revision/distribution/customisation...

I've bootcamped, formatted and installed with just the tiny XP disk

When I try and start up my bootcamp partition it says:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

What do I do?

I cannot find a standard XP disc, I lost mine etc etc
Is there a way?

TinyXP, hugeNightmare

I'm having the same problem (corrupt or missing system32\hal.dll) and am about to pull my hair out after trying to install TinyXP about 7 times tonight.

I'm burned the ISO to good media at a slow speed and these are the install steps I've been taking:

1. Create a partition using the Boot Camp Assistant (32gb/FAT32 since I'd like to share files between OS X/Windows, so NTFS wouldn't work too well)

2. Press `continue` and OS X reboots and boots the TinyXP CD, I select my desired TinyXP install.

3. I delete the BootCamp Partition and then create it again using the Windows installer (as there is no option to simply format the partition)

4. Read `War & Peace` while the partition formats.

5. Files are copied, the system reboots and then I get the hal.dll error.

I'd like to try editing boot.ini (as some sites have suggested this is the problem that leads to hal.dll errors), but when I boot back into OS X my bootcamp volume is nowhere to be seen.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Actually you should check out Paragon tools and MacFuse - both enable you to read and write to NTFS.

Pending any answer to the problem why can't tiny XP format like standard XP? I've installed Vista (having NTFSed it). I hope I'll be able to downgrade to a superior operating system soon though :p

Update

I have tried creating NTFS and FAT32 partitions with the Tiny XP CD. Neither work - the hal.dll error comes up regardless

In conjunction with the fact that I successfully installed Vista on a partition which had not been re-formatted since the Tiny XP disc formatted it, I think it is highly likely that Tiny XP does something wrong in the writing process: either it omits specifically the hal.dll file, or it neglects some process to prepare the partition for writing to, or else, there is an error with the writing of the boot procedure.

The question is: why on earth does it only affect Macs? And furthermore, why on earth does it not affect Macs which were formatted by standard XP?

So, yeah, does anyone know where this TinyXP came from so we can ask them?

Success

A thousand grey hairs later, I'm running TinyXP rev 9 under BootCamp.

Here's what I did:

1. Ran Boot Camp assistant. Created a 32gb partition.
2. Booted from TinyXP CD and was presented with a screen similar to this guys':

http://www.flickr.com/photos/speedye/123739507/in/set-72057594099504282/

Where partition 1 (200mb) is some nonsense partition created by Boot Camp and partition 3 is the partition I asked it to create. (I ignored my Mac OS partition and the unpartitioned space)

3. Deleted partition1 and partition3 (the numbers might vary on your system)

4. Created a new partition and formatted to FAT32 (I'm guessing NTFS would work, too but didn't want to fuss with anything else after all the stress I went through)

5. Let it do it's thing and reboot and whatever it has to do. I haven't seen the words HAL.DLL yet. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the tips. I'm just about to try doing the same thing myself.

If the above doesn't work, I was also going to try (and was going to suggest others try) installing TinyXP through Parallels or Fusion, then using it to format the partition within the VM, and finally installing it using Bootcamp...

EDIT: camfrye's steps above seem to have worked for me as well. There were a couple of odd error messages about missing "dspdsblr.exe" and "dpsfnshr.exe" files during the installation, but fingers crossed, everything looks OK for now.

So that's that then...

Ok everyone, Rev 09 Works; earlier ones don't, and need the 'swapsies' method.

Make sure you have Revision 09

actually...

I've had TinyXP rev 6 installed on my iMac for quite some time.. although it gave me a bit of grief during the install it wasn't nearly as painful as installing rev 9 on my Macbook.

Unfortunately I don't recall how I eventually installed it (as it was nearly a year ago) but older versions of TinyXP do appear to work under Boot Camp...

I suppose Leopard is required since it has boot camp version 2, which can load SP3, which TinyXP Rev 09 loads.

Someone let me know if this can work with Tiger 10.4.10 or 11. I'm running boot camp beta 1.1.2. I do have the 1.4 drivers though, suppose I'll need to grab the 2.1 drivers for XP though.

I hope I don't have to upgrade to Leopard, as I have lots of software that doesn't work in Leopard right now, and may never.

Thanks

If I press anything it goes to a blank screen with a cursor and has to be powered down to restart.

Any clues? Thanks.

Since you had success I'm sure you're not running Tiger, and my question above is am I able to run TinyXP Rev 09 on my Tiger macBook Pro with Bootcamp.

If not I suppose I'll have to update to Leopard.

larrygates, I am, indeed, running Leopard and have never tried using Bootcamp beta. Sorry. :(

Hey Guys,

I have a 2.16Ghz Core Duo MBP with 2GB ram, and I'm running Leopard 10.5.5. I have tried installing Tiny XP several times to no avail. Using the typical boot camp method, I get the disc error upon boot. I tried the swap method featured in this thread, and it still gave me the same error. I even tried a Vista Home Premium disc and that didn't work either. I've burned Tiny XP on DVD and CD both using slow speeds.

It just doesn't seem to work no matter what I do. But apparently, TinyXP Rev09 is supposed to work. Could it be that I have an older MBP? Perhaps older MBPs are harder to work with? I'm completely clueless.

I would really love to troubleshoot this problem, because I much rather have a 500MB install than a 5.5GB install. I would greatly appreciate ANY help. I've had to give up on TinyXP before and go the standard XP route, but I really don't want to give up this time.

Thanks so much.

matthewrex, have you tried the steps outlined above? create a partition using bootcamp assistant, reboot from the TinyXP CD and delete all partitions (except your OS X install!) and then re-formatting one of the partitions and installing....

Hey camfrye,

The thing is, whenever I attempt to boot from the Tiny XP disc, I get the familiar Disc Error screen that other users have described.

If I boot from a regular Windows XP disc, I can get to the partition screens, but with the Tiny XP disc, it just errors out.

Thanks though, I truly do appreciate your help. I really want to get this working.
