wanted to update and say TinyXP rev09 installed wonderfully and have had no problems running Orange Box HL2 or Fallout 3. I only gave the partition 48GB and noticed space is getting used up quickly from these games, so I am reinstalling windows under 80GB partition but decided to now install Damn Tiny Vista 64bit (gamer's edition) and I'll see how that works. If not any good I'll revert to my old XP system I had just backed up using winclone.

*Tiny Vista installed and it runs great, now I have all 4GB rams of usage plus 64bit haha yay. AND 80GB to use.. now will install steam plus The Orange Box and fallout 3 and will see how those run/compare to my previous TinyXP OS.

*edit*
I tested out Fallout 3 and it runs just as well as from XP but I like the TinyVista better. It runs very well and I got my 4GB of ram to use lol. Orange box runs great to and HL2 has a 64bit code I guess =)

Thanks for the info aznguyen316! I'm going to try installing fallout on my new white macbook, going to try vista 64 and bootcamp. Am I right in assuming you're using the 9400M chipset?
Anyway, cheers for the inspiration!:D

Hey yup, vista64 on the new MB w/ the 9400m so you'll be good. I'm using a slimmed down version of vista which is supposed to help performance b/c most of the programs etc have been removed. It's just for gaming and some web browsing really. I think I have FO3 at medium settings to get ~30FPS, no AA no HDR and the resolution just lower than the MB native res. I think if I go up to x800 resolution it drops 5FPS or so, so I could run low settings at the higher res but not my cup of tea. btw I'm using Fraps to check frame rates

Okay from reading through all the posts here it seems that TinyXP Rev 09 has the CD read error on all pre-Unibody MBP models, no matter if you use the swap method or not. Is there anybody who can refute this with an example?

Might help in finding out what the problem for all us CoreDuo, Core2Duo and Santa Rosas might be.

I get the previously mentioned CD reading error when booting off TinyXP Rev 09. Running Leopard 10.5.6 on a Macbook Pro Core2Duo 2.33 Ghz

I hadn't realized there was an error in pre unibody for tinyxp? What sort of CD read error? during installation or what? Not sure why there would be an issue except for formatting to NTFS via vista/7 and swapping.

Complete mac newb here.

I just picked up a macbook pro 17" (stock) yesterday from the apple store and now that it's all set up and pretty, I wanted to install Tiny on it to play some games and see what kind of performance I can get out of it.

Well the Tiny disk works, installs, copies all its files like it should and then I get "Disk Error, Press Any Key To Restart", only any key doesn't work - I have to do a hard boot, hold down the option key and eject the disk or I get the same error and have to do it over.

I've tried installing it twice, and both times without actually deleting the BootCamp partition (FAT32) it doesn't give me an option to format NTFS. I didn't want to delete anything because in this thread the general consensus seems to be DON'T delete any partitions.

I burned the disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed on the list (8x), set the bootcamp partition to 80GB...I'm really not sure what's going wrong here - can someone set me straight?

Also, on a side note, how do I get BitTorrent to work? I've tried telling the firewall to allow it, and setting the listening port to 50000 but it still says "Checking For Firewall" instead of downloading the file.

hmm not sure if you've read the thread or not, but it explains how to format to NTFS w/ swap trick and to get TinyXP to run.

I haven't tried the swap trick - I thought someone in here said that was only required for the previous macbook model?

Ah well, I'll give it another go with Damn Tiny Vista, as I've heard that's best for games anyway (which is really all I want windows for). I just wanted to avoid using an actual windows cd unless absolutely necessary. I've this mild sense of dread that using a genuine windows disk will somehow infect my nice new mac (haven't exactly had the best experience with anything windows except for Tiny) =\

Well I've installed DamnTinyVista (currently using for BootCamp gaming) and yeah that doesn't need swap, but only b/c it's the Vista install, I assumed you were trying to install TinyXP. For vista, just make sure it is formatted to NTFS, I think the installed will force that anyway b/c I don't think FAT32 will work.. anyway and then run through the installation. Shouldn't give you much problems. I'll scroll up to see what your issues were.

*edit*
okay after reading through, don't worry about whatever with your boot camp partition, Windows will format the drive. When starting up your Vista install, you MUST have it NTFS.. there should be the option of where to install your windows files.. click the PRIMARY labeled drive bootcamp partition, then under should be 4 options in a 2x2 grid kind of, choose format and it will format it.. then continue install. I believe that is your issue..

Many thanks! I'll give that a go just as soon as DTV finishes downloading (9 seeders, 2 of whom are online. This is going to be the longest 600MB download I've ever had)

I'll post with results when it's all said and done. Thanks again! :)

Well DTV installed fine...

...except now it refuses to connect to any network. So I can't get online to download any drivers rendering it officially useless for its intended purpose which is to play games.

No internets, no drivers...

If this is an easy fix, can someone help me out? Otherwise I'm just going to give up on windows altogether and pay the extra fifteen bucks and 10-14 months' wait for new mac games.

I assume the Damn Tiny Vista you got was the x64 (64-bit version) correct? This is what I use and for your intent of playing games I hope it was the 64bit version. Anyway, I know why it won't let you connect, it's because you have to install drivers. There are 64bit drivers on your INSTALL DISC. Either your leopard cd, or your recovery original disc. If you have that, here's what you want to do: (and yes it's very easy, I've done it twice)

first eject the DTV disc, you probably couldn't at first while in windows, but I'm sure you've gone back to OSX and ejected it. Okay next. insert your leopard installer disc, whether it's the retail or the grey one that came w/ your MB, I assume the latter since it's an unibody mac)

do this in windows:
click start and run: type in "cmd" (without quotes) and it should pop up one program, I hope you have a mouse via usb to make this easier, but right click it and run as administrator. if you can't right click via trackpad,I think you'll still be fine, but not sure.

next the command console will open, and type the following (I wrote this down on a notecard):

D: <enter> meaning to hit enter; I am assuming your superdrive is drive D which it should be.. I hope
cd Boot Camp\Drivers\Apple <enter> (*edit* I don't think quotes were necessary so just enter as is)
msiexec /i BootCamp64.msi <enter>

it should run the 64 bit bootcamp drivers from the install disc and install all the drivers: wifi, isight, etc etc then bam after a restart you should be good to go to get internet etc.

The reason for the following is the 64bit drivers are only for the Pro so apple won't let you install on your MB, but this way it lets you just run the installer anyway and will install all the correct drivers for vista 64.

If you don't have the leopard disc or original install discs for your MB you can find the bootcamp drivers via torrent or what not. should be ver. 2.1

After you get all that, I recommend downloading the MTTU.exe (multi-touch trackpad update) d/l from apple.com which will help the trackpad movement in windows b/c at first it's all weird.

Anyway good luck, I'm here to help any fellow gamers, esp in a situation I was certainly in and had to find help via google etc. let me know if this is confusing.. but all in all I'm just telling you how to intall the bootcamp drivers via your disc. This will basically let Windows use all the MB keys and functions as well as WiFi graphics etc. The bootcamp graphics drivers were also great for any games I threw at it, so no need to update unless you really want to.

Wow, very comprehensive answer! Thanks!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the 64x version. I snagged it off thepiratebay, and at that point it was the only vista besides eXPerience's version that I could find. Done up by Dekker-something I believe.Pretty sure it says 64 in the description somewhere.

The instructions are a little confusing because I've never done a lot in any console things before so I'll probably be referring back to your post in between each step to be sure I'm on the right track. But that is mainly due to my own inexperience with these things (previous experience on PC having been install game, muck about with patches, play game for three weeks before windows deteriorates and the computer becomes noticeably slower. Reformat, reinstall, repeat.) - the instructions themselves seem simple enough. :)

Again, I greatly appreciate the help with all these UTS errors (User Too Stupid).

Hey man no problem. Yeah that's the version I have. (Great for games) unless you need a game that requires .NET framework, then it won't work.. Lord of the Rings Online for example won't.

But yeah the instructions I've given you, all it is, is a command line to run the 64bit drivers, that's it. It looks confusing but it only takes 1min to do it all and you'll be on your way. Let me know if you need clarification, do not give up! I would be sad b/c DTV is a great lite OS for gaming and don't want someone to missout b/c of a few command lines.

Figured I'd break it down for you so you're not nervous about what you're entering.

D: --> this just tells command to look at drive D (your superdrive)
cd blah blah means basically open to this folder on the D drive
this third line is basically the location of the file .msi (64 bit driver file), so command goes to this and opens it and bam, it will open and windows will guide you through the install.

cool? If you make a typo, command will not understand it and nothing bad will happen, just re-enter that command line again.

Okay, I finally have time to sit down and give this a spin.

Also, I finally found my CoD5 dvd at the bottom of a box (it got lost in the move and I haven't had a chance to play it yet). So I'm just about to reinstall Windows.

Will edit in an update when it's all said and done.

Thanks!

Well it worked like a dream. I still don't have internet, but that doesn't matter much for my purposes. I'm not much of an online gamer anyway.

CoD5 runs perfectly on my new mac and DTV with all the settings maxed out (except for the resolution, which is sitting happily at the standard mbpro resolution) - nary a blip of lag in sight.

Next on the menu is CoD4, which I am very excited about. Then maybe I'll rock something a little older like Dark Messiah. I don't know. The gaming world is now my oyster.

If this quality of experience continues I will quite happily never own a PC again. :)

Thanks again for the help

Glad to hear man!! CoD4 will run even better than 5 so have fun w/ those settings =)

I also have Dark Messiah and it runs well on 2.0 MB so it'll be smooth as butter on your Pro

I have tiny XP REV 09 installed on bootcamp but for some reason it can take up to 30 seconds to show the desktop icons.

The desktop and start bar will be there but Icons take a lot longer to load. Has anyone else come accross these problems?

Could it be to do with macdrive 7 as thats the last thing i installed

So I read this thread, thanks for all the help, but it doesn't seem like anyone is having "my" problem, or maybe I'm making a n00b mistake (I got my macbook pro two weeks ago).

Anyway, I bought a new 13" 2.26ghz Macbook Pro, the only difference from the standard model being that I upgraded it to 4gb of RAM, rather than leaving it at just 2.

I have downloaded the Damn Tiny Vista ISO, burnt it with Alcohol 120% at 16X onto a verbatim CD-R (on my PC) but when I insert it into my macbook drive it doesn't register that anything is inserted. When I insert it into my PC's CD/DVD drive it sees it as a full CD (i.e. I can't burn to it), but my macbook doesn't recognise it at all. Moreover, when I try to have it as the installation disk with boot camp assistant (i.e. it says "insert the installation disk" and I do, but it tells me that this disk isn't a windows installation disk).

So am I making a silly mistake? Am I making a serious error? Is there something wrong with my hardware/software?

Quite likely that when they removed the bits and pieces of Vista they removed something necessary for your machine to boot it. Another reason could be the burn speed. I don't burn any data DVDs above 4x because things tend to go wrong and I end up with a coaster.

Quite likely that when they removed the bits and pieces of Vista they removed something necessary for your machine to boot it.

I might have expected that, had members (e.g. in the rest of this thread) had success running the exact same version of windows (Damn Tiny Vista) on their bootcamp dual boot.

nother reason could be the burn speed. I don't burn any data DVDs above 4x because things tend to go wrong and I end up with a coaster.

I had heard that burn speed could be a problem, so I burnt at the lowest speed Alcohol 120% gave an option of burning at (the range was 16X - 48X). Oh and it was a CD rather than a DVD. What program should I use if I want to burn slower than 16X?

Erm, I do my burning in Windows, I use imgburn. Haven't found a Mac equivalent as good.

Yeah I did mine in Windows. I will try imgburn if the next few trials also fail. I'm also trying TinyXP with the swap-trick as described before -- although I will have to find my XP disc...

I'd appreciate any other advice, thanks

Update

OK

I burnt the image to a CD successfully with the built in software on an iMac, and successfully installed Vista on the partition I created with Boot Camp. However, there are two, not massive, but to some extent significant problems.

Firstly, (Damn Tiny) Vista is now set as my default boot system, and I have no idea why.

Secondly, whenever (DT) Vista does start, there is lots of scary text about drives being in the wrong format and needing to be re-partitioned. It has as of yet never acted on its threats, but it is slightly worrying.

Its normal that its default, Vista sets itself this way. I don't have Bootcamp I can't tell you how to change this :(

Vista doesn't know anything at all about Apple's filesystem thats why it gives warnings. Ignore them.

Thanks

I wasn't too worried about the default stuff anyway, I can easily press the option button at start-up if I want to
