As much as I appreciate all the responses, I have an update.

I freshly formatted my MBP and re-installed Leopard. The first thing I did after updating 10.5 was Bootcamp. Tiny XP Rev09 still did NOT work. I have no idea what the issue is, I've tried multiple different discs.

I guess its just not meant to be.

Also, Bootcamp seems to of corrupted my HD so I need to reinstall Leopard AGAIN. Great...

I just got one of the new Macbook Pros (15.4 inch, 2.53 GHz default) the other night and the first thing I did was try to install TinyXP Rev 09 using Boot Camp. I created a 120GB partition using Boot Camp, then booted up onto the TinyXP disc successfully and formatted the 120GB partition to NTFS / installed TinyXP (option 1). After doing this, I got the missing hal.dll error message and booted into OS X / deleted the Windows partition. After this, I again created a new partition but noticed something weird: I couldn't create a 120GB partition, it skipped from 119GB to 121GB, and some common numbers like 128 and 112 did the same thing. I ended up creating a 115GB partition and this time I deleted the 200MB partition Boot Camp created and formatted the 115GB one to NTFS and then installed TinyXP onto it. This allowed me to successfully boot and everything went fine (I've installed Rev 09 before on my Dell), but several drivers were missing (such as the VGA / video driver, HD audio, network, etc) which were all very important. I heard that you could create a driver disc using Boot Camp so I again went into OS X and started Boot Camp, but it would not allow me to get past the first screen. It said something about formatting a partition to Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and said to try running Boot Camp again after doing that. I used the Disk Utility to delete the Windows partition and format it to Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), then resizing my OS X partition to fill the entirety of the space. Although it was 297GB in size, it said I only had 164GB free and that I was only using 20GB of space. I tried everything from Repairing the Disk Permissions to booting off my OS X disc and Repairing the actual disk, but I ended up having to reinstall Mac and format everything.

Has anyone else experienced this? Or better yet, does anyone know a way around it?

The main problem is that Boot Camp is an *******. When you use the boot camp assistant to partition the hard drive and start the installation the disc will either freeze at the tinyxp splash screen or you will get a disc error. However, if you have a regular copy of windows (still can be pirated, but just non-altered such as tinyxp) you can get it to work with a little swap trick.

So here's what to do:
Run the boot camp assistant from osx and hit start installation with your regular copy of windows inserted. With this it should start the DOS-like installation. When it gets to the choice of where to install windows you will see a boot camp partition. You need to format that partition to NTFS, but do not confuse formatting with deleting! Make sure you select the boot camp partition to install windows onto and when it asks if you would like to format choose NTFS. Afterwards it will copy a few files over and restart. Upon this restart hold the Option key and you will arrive at the boot screen. At this point switch the disc to your Tiny XP Rev 09 and boot from that disc. You will no longer get the disc read error or freeze at the splash screen. Continue to choose whichever version of the installation you like and it will goto that same windows DOS-like installer again. When prompted with the choice of where to install windows choose the boot camp partition once again. It will tell you that there is already a windows folder on the partition (from when it copied files over with the regular windows disc). Select the option to delete these files and install again. Now you will be installing from TinyXP and you should be completely unattended from here on out. Enjoy!

Works like a charm, MP '08, 10.5.4 , original XP + TinyXP Rev09 .
Thanks for the hints !

Add one to the "swap method works" column. Formatted with NTFS. Windows did give me 40 "New Hardware Found" though, but other than that, it works great!

Summary

Well after months of ducking around with vista, I had another go at tiny xp and Success!

Method:
  • Format the partition with a regular windows disk
  • Use the LATEST tinyxp revision.

My problem had been that tinyxp rev05 sucked.
At the time of this post, rev09 is the latest and quick to download.
NB. I used a vista disk to format and this worked fine and dandy.
NBQ. If you're doing this to the first time, don't forget to put in the regular Windows disk as soon as the bootcamp assistant restarts you. For some reason tinyxp conceals the option to reformat (which is neccessary) unless the partition is full, so if you put it in before reformatting it will try and install xp oblivious. Good luck!

I am thinking of tryin gout tinyXP in place of slimming down my own XP disk. I see that some people had issues getting TinyXP to run in a VM. Is this still an issue with the newest revision of TinyXP or TinyXP Beast Edition?

I'm trying it out now with latest VMware and latest TinyXP.

UPDATE: They speak eachother's language, but I got this tedious little glitch. Hopefully, that doesn't matter. I'm going native now, to see if my USB peripheries still work.

Summary

Ok, I have just tested VMWare Fusion with TinyXP, and alternated from VM to BootCamp, to see if there are any adverse effects. I am pleased to report that there are no serious ones.

Minor problems I had:
  1. After VMWare installation, Windows wanted me to download drivers for certain things. Curiously, the PCI Bridge had cloned itself 32 times, but once you click OK 64 times, you're fine (see here).
  2. I dared not let Windows anywhere near my HID Compliant Mouse driver, after my nightmare last year. Do so at your own peril - it works fine without letting Windows download anything.

I used:
  • BootCamp 2.1
  • TinyXP Rev09
  • VMWare Fusions 2.0.1

Cool; Thanks for the update. I am happy I didn't end up trying it last night after seeing the problems you ran into. Instead, I did some more research on slim XP installs and found a tutorial for rolling your own "Tiny MacXP" XP install using nLite. I ended up rolling my own version last night and I am going to test it out today. Will post my results for anyone who is interested.

I am happy I didn't end up trying it last night after seeing the problems you ran into.

Well, to be fair, using this method probably saved time in the end, because regular XP asks you loads of pointless questions which TinyXP cuts out - probably about 64 clicks worth. So I wouldn't say the problems are titanic...

Anyway, for the sake of general edification, and because I'm likely to be asked for the easiest way to get tinyXP onto a mac smoothly, please post up details of your method!

I posted the link to the tutorial I used in my last post, so if you want to know how it was done, its there for you. If you want me to post the resulting profile from nLite, I can do that.

For those that are interested, here are the results of the install

OS: WinXP SP3 (slipstreamed into install)
Features: Removes just about all non-essential features, much like tinyXP. IE is still included as I needed something to download FF with and Windows Update needs IE to work (More about the issues with that later).

Issues:
  • Microsoft Update does not work; I get an error everytime I try to use it; Got around this by using Windows Updates Downloader, but ran into other problems
  • Some updates will hang or just outright refuse to install; This is my first time using a slimed-down XP install, so I am not sure if this is normal or not
  • NOTE: DirectX 9.0c does install, along with WMP11 updates
  • Cannot install .NET 1.x frameworks; .NET 2.x does install, but you cannot install the updates for it
  • For some reason, it takes between 1-30+ seconds for the desktop to display when logging in; It happens randomly and I can't seem to figure out why it happens at all

At the moment, that is what I have run into. Other then those problems, it runs quickly and without issue in BootCamp and VMWare (booting BootCamp partition). I am tempted to download TinyXP and compare it to my own "Tiny MacXP", but don't feel like wiping out my install as I finally got all my stuff installed and working. I am going to talk with a friend of mine who is more familiar with customizing XP installs to see if my issues are normal or not. If they are not, I'll wipe the partition and (if I can get a hold of it) test TinyXP Beast Edition to see if they are comparable.

PS If anyone here knows if those issues are normal or not with a slimed-down XP, please tell me. I would rather spend the time this weekend making a new slim-install and testing it out then trying to do it during the coming week (with the holidays and all).

Update: Turns out that my Tiny MacXP build was messed up. I ended up making a slim XP install (install maxes out at about 4GB). I'll eventually look into TinyXP Beast Edition as it might be more stable then my Tiny MacXP or even rebuild my own custom install. As of right now, the Slim install I made seems to be working fine. Have it at 512MB and Firefox still lags when the VM is open. Annoyed ATM, but I will eventually figure it out.

Re:TinyXP IEEE 1394 OHCI driver not installing

Hi all
I successfully installed Tiny xp Beast Edition on my MBP Santa Rosa after getting rid of the full version of Xp(which is original).Must say Tiny xp is lightning fast .I need to primiralyv use it with audio applications like Nuendo. However i cannot get the firewire to work.

Under Hardware>device manager>Other Devices>?! IEEE 1394 Controller
(i get an exclaimation question mark)

Assuming this is my firewire bus,i need for this to work so that i can hook my motu untralite which is a firewire sound card

I tried looking everywhere for the driver but windows does not have, nor bootcamp(currently on bootcamp 2.0 as updating to Boot camp 2.1 changes the display to 4bit and will not change back no matter what)

also pointing to original windows cd full xp is of no use
Please help.

Am downloading Tiny Xp rev9 with SP3 now.
Will that help?
BTW what Firewire chip is on the Mac Book pro Santa Rosa(June 2008)
please mail me on djsanjeev@hotmail.com

regards

I believe TinyXP removes "unnecessary" driver support, including Firewire. You might be able to download them from MS, but not entirely sure.

RE:Tiny XP Beast ed

I believe TinyXP removes "unnecessary" driver support, including Firewire. You might be able to download them from MS, but not entirely sure.

Microsoft only allows you to update thru windows update and that thru only IE and not Firefox which is the only browser installed in TinyXP,The other option is windizupdate(something like that on firefox) but that didnt cough up any fw update

Searched the whole web but all downloads point to windowsupdate server.

I now got TinyXP Rev 9 with SP3.Installing it as I post.I have selected option 5(ie bare with driver support and IE OE and WMP)

Lets hope its as fast ow am going to nlite and putting xp on a severe workout to get rid of all the extra flab(Tiny XP Beast ed worked just fine with just 6 ms latency...thats awesome in pro audio...just my dumb luck that the one peice of hardware i needed most screwed me!!!)

Keeping me fingers crossed....hope its worth IT!!!!

anyone have further suggestions on which option to install under tinyxp rev09 if you just want to use it for gaming? Do I need driverpack if I'm just using boot camp drivers? thanks!!

Strangely, upon trying another Boot Camp/TinyXP installation, I wasn't able to get past that (fugly) TinyXP logo screen. The only difference I can think of is that this time I'd run all the system updates before starting up Boot Camp (i.e. I was starting from 10.5.6, rather than 10.5.5).

However, using the swap method described above, it looks like everything is working OK. Again, I get error messages about "dspdsblr.exe" and "dpsfnshr.exe" (nobody else seems to be getting these) but they didn't affect the stability of the system last time, so I think this time it should be a problem either.

could I use a windows 7 beta installer to do the swap method as in format to NTFS and then go into TinyXP installer? It's all I have at the moment on a dvd lol

welp I tried this for myself and it worked. Very easy, just booted up bootcamp, windows 7 disc and then formatted the boot camp partition using custom install under windows 7 install process, automatically made it NTFS and then I quit out the installer, no copying files necessary. Then did the swap, put in TinyXP rev09, booted from that and installing as we speak. Chose option 7. But man installing takes awhile..

Just wanted to add my experience of using TinyXP Beast on a 15", 2.4GHz C2D Unibody MacBook Pro with Leopard 10.5.6.

I initially used Boot Camp to set up a 32GB partition and went ahead and installed Windows XP Pro SP2 from the DVD. In the process I formatted the partition as NTFS. I didn't like the way it was performing (the Help viewer crashed within the first 5 minutes…) so I decided to reinstall using TinyXP Beast (which, being based on XP Pro SP2, I feel justified using). I simply restarted the laptop with the disc in the drive, held Option for the Startup Manager and chose the disc. Installation from this point on was a breeze, and TinyXP Beast is now installed and running.

The Boot Camp drivers (provided on the Leopard Install Discs provided with the laptop) were necessary to enable Eject functionality for the Superdrive. The Apple MultiTouch Trackpad Update for Windows 1.0 was necessary to nail-down the trackpad responsiveness, which was initially problematic though usable.

I have since installed Doom 3 (subsequently upgraded to 1.3.1) and it runs like a dream @ 1024x768. Very impressed. Will be trying Call of Duty tonight.

Hope this helps someone.

Has anyone tried Damn Tiny Vista? I have it in 64bit edition but haven't bothered to install b/c TinyXP is working for me, just wondering if I can gain anything by usig the Vista 64bit for gaming, I know I can get the remaining 700MB ram from the 64bit but what about speeds for gaming I wonder.

wanted to update and say TinyXP rev09 installed wonderfully and have had no problems running Orange Box HL2 or Fallout 3. I only gave the partition 48GB and noticed space is getting used up quickly from these games, so I am reinstalling windows under 80GB partition but decided to now install Damn Tiny Vista 64bit (gamer's edition) and I'll see how that works. If not any good I'll revert to my old XP system I had just backed up using winclone.

*Tiny Vista installed and it runs great, now I have all 4GB rams of usage plus 64bit haha yay. AND 80GB to use.. now will install steam plus The Orange Box and fallout 3 and will see how those run/compare to my previous TinyXP OS.

*edit*
I tested out Fallout 3 and it runs just as well as from XP but I like the TinyVista better. It runs very well and I got my 4GB of ram to use lol. Orange box runs great to and HL2 has a 64bit code I guess =)

@aznguyen316, i am interested to install Tiny Vista onto my Mac Mini. currently i have tiny XP running under VMware, but would like to install Tiny Vista under boot camp. can i ask if you needed to use the swap method in order to install Tiny Vista under boot camp? or the Tiny Vista installation CD alone is sufficient for a boot camp install? appreciate any pointers. thanks!

Hey, I'm going to think about this really hard.. but I don't believe a swap was necessary since all the formatting software was on the Tiny Vista disc. It was essentially the same interface as the Windows7 disc I used to swap trick the TinyXP. So yeah, if you can find TinyVista you should go for it! Just format to NTFS which should be the only option for Vista, then install TinyVista. There are several options for Vista, I chose the bare minimum with driver support. I think there are 9 options from the one I got. Damn Tiny Vista (gamer's edition).

^ thanks buddy.. will definitely try out TinyVista tonight.. btw, any advise on minimum size of partition? i'm on a Mac Mini with 60Gb hdd.. so need to maximize use of space ;)

oh wow, 60GB to work with? Well what are you wanting to use it for? I'm using mine purely for gaming, hence the TinyVista so I put 80GB for it of my 250GB.. If you're just using it for windows itself I guess 5GB, the min. is good?
