Apple Camera app and a mix of Apple Photos, Capture One, and Affinity Photo for post, not that post matters since I'm talking about Apple's in-camera processing.

And your phone is shooting in RAW, correct? Which iPhone are you using?

Real optical zoom would be huge news. I‘ll believe it when I see it, though.

And no, it is definitely not „easy“. If it was easy, Sony wouldn‘t be the only one doing it.
I remember reading Apple has a patent for a variable aperture lens for the iPhone. I wonder if that is a mistake here? I mean none of the case or model things show the extra button either. I don’t believe the rumor but MR removing the film company name actually adds credibility to the whole thing as they apparently freaked and got MR to remove it.

iPhone 13, RAW isn't an option.

That explains why you're getting less than outstanding results. Guess your shooting in JPEG or HEIF. There's no way that will match the results you'd get if shooting in Apple RAW and post processing in LR. Shooting RAW will give you far more dynamic range. JPEG image files are highly compressed. You'll never get the original image information back during post processing.

You don't need to explain the difference between RAWs and JPEGs, I have a proper camera and shoot/edit RAW plenty.

This still goes back to what I said before — this is not something a user should have to buy their way out of, nor is it something that better dynamic range will fix. I don't like sharing my photos online, but this is an example I found on Google that shows an extreme version of the issue I'm talking about. You can find others where text becomes unreadable, pet fur becomes a swirly mess, etc.

I never came across that lack of sharpness when I shot in JPEG (which I haven't done in a few years) on my older iPhones. There's something weird going on. A large crop, and then enlarging the cropped photo could do that - especially if you got the photo online somewhere without knowing what was done to it.

In any event... maybe it's time to move forward upgrading your phone and shoot in RAW.

Lol! Should Apple fix their software issue? Nah bro, just buy a more expensive phone.

This is something I see to a lesser extent in photos I've taken myself. I've seen it in other people's photos. I know you simply don't want to believe there could be a problem that is *shudder* Apple's fault but this is an issue that exists and has been noticed by plenty of people. The solution is better software, not spend more money to make bigger file.

I'll eventually upgrade my phone when it needs upgrading, but the idea that I need to buy a Pro phone and shoot RAW just to get good photos is a joke.

I never had any sharpness issues with my older phones shooting JPEG. Full stop.

You do what you need to do, including doing nothing. That's fine with me.

I get the sense that even if the issue was there and blatantly obvious, you'd find a way not to see it.

Interesting to hear about the camera changes. I would like for it to be at 5x and with the new 48MP sensor, it should allow for 10x optical quality like zoom. It would be very disappointing for me if Apple decides to go for a 3.5x or even 4x. Don't mind if Apple adds another lens like in some of the Samsung models.

When scrolling for news I saw some other side claiming the mechanical zoom would be coming a week or two ago. However they specified it would only be like that in pro max. Unfortunately I was just googeling around and could not provide a link for people to check on if this is a credible source or not.

These days smartphones are effectively cameras with some connectivity features. 😕
Social media usage really. Post TikToks, IG stories and what not. The platforms are all gonna get compressed the hell out of it, but the camera usage can be quite heavy and no surprise the efforts and marketing are revolved around there.

  • An additional Camera Control button on the top edge of the devices, for quickly accessing the camera and related settings. This would complement the Camera Control button on the bottom-right edge of all iPhone 16 models.

Omg, I screamed. As if the previous one was useful... at least reposition it.
The camera control on the iPhone 16 series is the single most innovative feature of a phone in years. It enables you to capture the moment before it passes by transforming the phone into a point and shoot camera, with the camera control perfectly positioned under your index finger like a real camera.

Stop adding buttons! At some point it'll be impossible to hold the phone without touching at least one button.

I hope that rumor is false.

as some others here, i guess it's 3.5x or 4x @48mp and the 7x or 8x "optical" just a 12mp crop of that 48mp @ 3.5x or 4x. optical zoom: i never read any reliably rumors regarding this here... would be great, if we'd get it, but i doubt it. mechanical aperture: i read something about that... so it might be that? wouldn't be so interesting though, i think.

regarding the optical zoom: i asked this myself a few months ago when we heard about that big camera bump. discussed it here in the forum... i thought it could be a possibility... but as others mentioned as well: this kind of hardware change... should have been leaked before?!

Apple has started adding useless buttons starting with the action button on the 15 Pro, only because there's nearly nothing else new newer iPhones offer.
That action button is actually very useful as it’s not just limited to the mute switch anymore. It’s nice to change it to whatever I want, as I keep my phone always on mute; that button before was absolutely useless. Now I can actually do something useful with it.

They removed the company’s name from the article, lol. Too little, too late, Apple’s probably already seen it, and now that company is in trouble. Great journalism MR! 👌
I genuinely hope not. However, besides MacRumors's mistake of naming the company, I quite don't understand the insider's urge to disclose this info. It's not for glory because he/she needs stay anonymous and of course MacRumors doesn't compensate anyone for these leaks. Also, it's not as if disclosing a few details about the new iPhone − less than 2 months before its public release − is akin to leaking some important information that governments are hiding from the public.
