Isn't it fascinating that we've gone from "Apple wants to get rid of all buttons from all of their phones" to them adding a new button each year?
The ultimate end of this is going to be an iPhone with the entire front being screen, the entire back being camera, and the quarter-inch tall strip around the 4 edges that connect the front and back, being one continuous touch strip, like the MBP's had for a while. Programmable smart bittons around the entire edge of the phone.

The other rumour is that it would be 3.5X at 48 MP and 7X at 12 MP utilizing the same sensor but with a centre crop. If one to believe this new unsubstantiated and suspect rumour, by extrapolation it would be 4X at 48 MP and 8X at 12 MP.

8x at 12MP would be 4x optical plus 2x digital zoom

I get the sense that even if the issue was there and blatantly obvious, you'd find a way not to see it.

Absolutely wrong. I tried in good faith to understand what issue you were dealing with so you could make excellent photos shooting RAW. But you seem to want to stay with your iPhone 13 and shoot in JPEG. Good luck going forward.

I hope there are new features related to AI as well because we don't need more camera control buttons in iPhone.

I don't want more zoom, I want the 3x zoom back from the iPhone 15 Pro. It was the best lens for taking nice portrait photos but the 5x lens requires you to stand way further back and doesn't result in as sharp photos.

seems that apple understood that 3x is more useful in general, but that people also want more zoom as well... so we'll get both this year somehow....

When I’ve seen this new modell of iPhone a few times, I start to see the future iPhone with will be like lego and make it possible to add various components to the 1st that contain the minimal tech.

So start with a iPhone micro, and then add components for your preferences, up to mega max...
I would keep the iPhone Micro and be happy with it 😉

For me an ideal iPhone cam would be with 4 lenses: 0.5x, 1x, 3x and 10x (or possibly even more than 10x) zoom.

Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models will have several new camera-related features, according to an anonymous tipster who contacted MacRumors today.

iPhone-17-Pro-on-Desk-Centered-1.jpg

The tipster claimed to be familiar with an iPhone 17 Pro commercial that is allegedly being produced by a film company that has publicly listed Apple as one of its clients. MacRumors has not independently confirmed any of the information shared by the tipster, so skepticism is obviously warranted for now.

The tipster revealed three alleged iPhone 17 Pro features that have not been rumored previously:
  • An upgraded Telephoto lens with up to 8× optical zoom, compared to up to 5× optical zoom on the iPhone 16 Pro models. The lens can apparently move, allowing for continuous optical zoom at various focal lengths.
  • An all-new pro camera app from Apple for both photos and videos. This app would compete with the likes of Halide, Kino, and Filmic Pro. It is unclear if the app would be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro models.
  • An additional Camera Control button on the top edge of the devices, for quickly accessing the camera and related settings. This would complement the Camera Control button on the bottom-right edge of all iPhone 16 models.
For the pro camera app, the tipster warned there is a chance Apple is planning a major update to its existing Final Cut Camera app instead of an all-new app.

The tipster also said that rumors about the iPhone 17 Pro having a new copper-like color option and a centered Apple logo are apparently true.

iPhone 17 Pro models are widely expected to feature a redesigned rear camera system, so it would be a fitting year for Apple to have some big camera-related upgrades planned. The devices are expected to have three 48-megapixel rear cameras.

In February, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple was planning to emphasize the iPhone 17 Pro's improved video recording capabilities.

Here is what he said about that:In addition, Front Page Tech's Jon Prosser said the Camera app on the iPhone 17 Pro models will let users record video with the front and rear cameras simultaneously.

As we mentioned above, these rumors should be treated with skepticism for now, since they were shared by an anonymous tipster with no proven track record. If other sources confirm or deny these rumors, we will be sure to update this article accordingly.

Update — 11:45 a.m. Pacific Time: MacRumors has removed the name of the film company from this article, per the tipster's follow-up request. The tipster had not indicated that this information was to be kept off the record.

Shame about the terrible Siri and AI service vs the google offering, Apple, please up your game here. If it was not for the apps and the interconnect-ability between phone and laptop I would be leaving.

4 and 8 would be reasonably close.... ;-) and the rumor says it'd be a real zoom... so if it's true (which i hope, but doubt): the 8x would still be 48mp... that'd be a 16x zoom at 12mp in the end... almost too good to be true.

An additional camera control button? sounds unnecessary
The first one was unnecessary. Should have been a simple shutter button (“Camera Button”) for quickly initiating a photo or video from a single press from anywhere in the OS while simultaneously dissolve transitioning the user into the Camera app. An easter egg being a half-press would allow the user to see through the camera temporarily in a pop-up view that wouldn’t entirely fill the screen, allowing them to snap what they are viewing or easily dismiss the experience.

Having a redundant touch surface on the button complicates it for most users, when Apple’s focus should have been to deliver and communicate a simple quality of life improvement: “Take photos and videos faster.”

No way Apple would introduce so many improvements in a single generation. They always release the necessary minimum to drive sales with zero innovation.

We are getting repositioned Apple logo, that’s it.
The new zoom I think would just be a result of making the sensor 48mp and the new app is a software upgrade, but yeah proceed with suspicion...

That's exactly how it works on my 16PM. I can be in any iPhone app (Stocks, Safari, Maps, Notes, etc), and pressing the small button on the left side will take me to the camera app. Pressing it again will take a picture.

I refined my comment to help communicate better what I wanted to say. Read my edited comment to see what I mean. It should be one press to initiate a photo or video, not two. A second press from within the camera would snap another photo. The first press would simultaneously take a photo and bring the user to the Camera app—speed. The button should not have any touch functionality by design, to simplify what the button needs to focus on being and communicating to all users, a speed shutter.

If the first press simultaneously takes a photo and brings you to the Camera app, how do you properly frame your photo as the photo would already be taken as the Camera app launches?

That wouldn't work for me. What does work... pressing the small button for a half second, which brings up the Camera app (from any other app). After framing my photo, a 2nd press takes the picture.
