Why won't this thread die?

Because it's a silly name. It's based on an area in California? It seems that most Californians haven't even heard of the place, let alone the rest of the world. When I first read the name I thought, 'Who's a Maverick? The users? Customers of the world's biggest company are really mavericks?? In what way? Maybe Apple are mavericks - are they? Those likeable but cheesy guys in smart casual suits and expensive cars are mavericks? Maybe the software is a maverick, but that doesn't make sense either because it's plural and maverick software would probably be unreliable..' etc, etc.

Now I hear that it's a place in California I'm no happier because the connotations of misguided self-importance remain. I like a bit of surfing myself when I go on holiday but what has that got to do with Apple and an operating system? At least the big cat theme, although equally dumb, was humourous and graphically recognizable to most of the world. This particular name just smacks of self importance and a California based naming convention would quickly become dull: where next are they going to pick - Owens Valley? Schwarzenegger Villas?

The issue is lack of name recognition. I'm from Boston and I had no idea. I suspect it means even less to OSX customers outside of the US

Yeah, I had to google too...

I am from Czech Republic and the only time I've seen that word was in GTA San Andreas as a name of one of the helicopters....

But the word sounds cool to me as a non-native speaker...

Very chauvinistic

For people not from the USA, the big cat names had meaning, it was nice. The New Names Spew arrogance, I don't care for some stupid surfing spot of the coast from some far away polluted coast line. I think apple screwed up with this one, why didn't they go to predator birds, or something with real global appeal. CUMMON APPLE

I live in California and I've heard of Mavericks before OS X. It's a surfing spot, famous among surfers. I don't see why there's so much negativity, people complain about not being able to relate to it; how do you relate to mountain lions, tigers, leopards, snow leopards, etc?

Their new series of OS are based off California, I really don't see the big deal, it's just a name.

Of course, this is just my opinion :) I like the name and I'm psyched to see what the other versions will be called.

Edit: I'm glad I'm not one of the people who get their panties in a bunch over the name of an OS, something they have no control over. Get over it, it's just a name.

I could not stand their reasoning. They were running out of cats. Seriously apple? There are quite a few out there.

I hate the name.. And the low Q looking wall paper.. Here in Utah the name reminds people of a popular gas station chain.

I thought the sea lion name that they joked about would have been better... Or even this... See attachment.

Gaga means idiot in Tagalog. That's all I know about the name. I don't give a rats about some lame pop singer.

She's far from lame.

She's the worlds most powerful female musician.

Her name comes from Queen's song 'Radio Gaga', due to her theatrical artistic nature.

I could not possibly, by any stretch of the imagination, care less what Apple names their OS X.

In the real world, this is beyond trivial.

No, that would be Rihanna or Katy Perry.

Seriously, Gaga has social and political power, not to mention financial.

She is also one of the few true artists in the music industry.

Please thread, die. Just die. :(

(And they wonder why I drink).
