Right, because it makes so much sense for a company to name it's latest and most modern OS after an "Extinct and Ancient" species of animal. :p

Honestly judging from the last few posts you've put up in under an hour one could think you were sipping on the happy syrup this saturday night. ;)

Quit the ad hominem attacks please friendo, I am only trying to contribute. Smiley Face.

But these cats would still be alive today if it weren't for large asteroids etc, so I don't see anything uncool about them. If anything they are cooler than the present day species.

Sorry about that, your posts were making me giggle a bit so I started to wonder. :)
I never said those animals you mentioned weren't cool....but animals in general especially of the cat species are not known to have a "cool factor" about them.
The OS X cat names were to represent strength and growth of the operating system. Naming the system after a primitive beast would make OS X sound as ancient as the stone age, IMO.

Sabre Tooths, or Cave Lions aint cool? I will have to disagree with you on that.

OS X is ancient - in the context of the history of the personal computer and the portable computer, so in 100 years time people will see no problem with it.

By the way, I think that 15 years ago when You've Got Mail was released, those computers were just fine! Nothing ancient about them, but actually they were some of the earliest (83 being probably when PCs and PPCs really took off, I guess).

a short history of mavericks:

(clip from 'riding giants')

Are you trying to refer Jeff Clark is toward Mavericks (the place) as SJ was toward APPLE?

But what is this short film related to the topic? As we all know Mavericks is a place for surfing. The video doesn't make Mavericks as a name of OSX sound right to me...still when I think most users like me, are not a surfer.

No surprise here ... I hate the name. But my reasons are not merely personal - I think Apple made a miserable marketing decision here.

Why? Try these on for size:
• California -focus. It's a global company, and frankly, I similarly dislike the "designed by Apple in california" -slogan. It's parochial and self-absorbed in the extreme. Think about the brand: We all look at big cats in the zoo, we all adore/venerate/takeyourpick them - California does not have a competitive brand, especially not against big cats or world national capitals or planets or world rain forests (I actually think even the android naming scheme - appalling as it is - is better than a California-based one).

• A Surfing beach? Youhavegottobekidding me. Steve Jobs did not surf. Jony Ive does not surf. And sure as excrement, Apple designers do not surf -they do not have the time for it.

• Recognition: As many here have pointed out: Recognition sucks.

• Wrong connotations: Tom Cruise in Top Gun being at the mildest end of the spectrum. (although you could see it paying homage to the "here's to the crazy ones" and "think different" -tradition)

• No translation possible. Most of the world does not speak american or english, and on all the 3 non-english -speaking apple forums I'm a regular on, people actually regularly translate the big cats to their own language. Say goodbye to that familiarity.

• Verbally challenging. For non-natives it is far less easy to spell and nigh impossible to inflect/decline. Quite long also, and can not be abbreviated (unlike Leo, ML or SL).

All in all, a sadly bad decision (IMNSHO).

RGDS,

It's a terrible name. It makes me think of Palin saying 'Maverick!' in her retarded accent. P.S., I hate both of our major political parties with equal vigor, so don't assume otherwise.

“an unorthodox or independent-minded person”

And then there is the definition of a Maverick: “an unorthodox or independent-minded person.’ I know, I know, it's not that, but how can the average world citizen know? And the lack of ' is a silly Americanism for place names which makes no sense. Or does it mean there are many Mavericks?

And lastly, the dictionary definition and the surfer place both try to give off the idea that it's not a large established company, don't you think?

But as a friends says, the new desktop image just says they are no longer on the crest of the innovation wave...

Poor branding all around. Will the next updates be called Venice, Zuma, Topanga and Manhattan Beach?...

Anything is better than those girly dessert names on Android.
I can't imagine seeing this:

OS X Ice Cream Sandwich

OS X Jelly Bean

OS X Strawberry Shortcake, Coconut Cake, Buttercream Frosting, Rocky Road or Chocolate Decadence.

Very silly of Google. The world isn't made of only teenage prissy girls. Can't imagine any masculine men entertaining those names for an operating system.

It sounds like a brand of cigarette to me. I can just imagine someone going into a shop and asking for "20 Mavericks and a Racing Post".

I grew up in California and never heard of mavericks. I do fully expect Apple to sue the state of California for sharing the name though :)

Those names just give a creative name to something that could be complex. At least people can relate to Androids names.

I really wish OS X would have went space themed instead of a theme that will last 3 years and no one will understand.

I dislike that it sounds plural. Like if if it had been "Mac OS Mountain Lions."

I know it's not plural, but it's sure going to sound that way to 99% of the people out there.

I don't hate it, but I think that's kind of a weird thing.

AMEN! The fact they made it plural is MORONIC and IMBECLIC. It's awkward and stupid.

You get that the Android names are in alphabetical order, right?
