No, no I agree with you. But I do like the X logo. It's.. sleek.

Hey, no Siri. Strange. I thought it would get it.

OS X Mavericks though sounds like a really small update (to me).

I dont really give a damn to what they call it, they could call it sissy pants for all I care

the multi display support that is a problem for several years now and the aggregation is what i want

It's the name of a surf spot in California. Mavericks is the spots name that's why it is called Mavericks and not Maverick.
Ok. One up-vote for the timely explanation.

But that will surely not resonate with the 99.99999999% of the world that doesn't surf.

I like the name because it doesn't immediately create a picture in your head (like Lion, etc… did). It's fairly abstract, and a wave is also fairly abstract. It's not a "thing" but rather a movement. It's what an OS should be: the ability to move things around, and not that much a thing in itself.

It also sounds fairly technical and sophisticated, which is a bit unusual for Apple, but it may show that they're still taking OS X seriously, especially next to the "cuter" iOS. I'm probably just reading way too much into it, but it's the general impression it gives off to me!

All in all, it sounds fresh, new, different and modern.

Mavericks, Santa Cruz, or any other northern Californian surf spot, it doesn't matter. I love the wave. Just added the wallpaper to my present screen.

I dont surf and I know, its called culture.

they actually have one of the largest waves in that place as well. the background photos of the OS was a give away though

I think the plural makes sense. One maverick is short lived, it rolls by and poof it's gone. The plural takes it past the literal and goes into the whole experience.

I'm interested in what the subsequent releases after Mavericks will be called. I wonder if they'll have a Disney edition...MouseEars?

Surfs up!

OSX Death Valley?

It's the first time since the death of Steve Jobs that I have the feeling that they made a (tiny) branding mistake that would have never happened with him as CEO. I'm sure it's a great place but it lacks the universality of 'Tiger' or 'Lion.' They should have chosen for famous places like Paris, Chicago, Hong Kong, New York (that's what they did with the font names in the 80s).

However, this Keynote has been great and I really like the feature set of 10.9 and all the rest they are doing.

I too thought the names sucks but the features look solid and useful.

I'm looking forward to it.

Bummer about the MBPs though...

The issue is lack of name recognition. I'm from Boston and I had no idea. I suspect it means even less to OSX customers outside of the US

I've never heard of Mavericks in California but it does remind me of my local, cowboy themed pub, which is called the Maverick. :)

I've heard of Santa Cruz because it's the name on the frame of my mountain bike. :D

To be honest, Sea Lion sounds better than Mavericks. The way he brought it up as a joke, then showing Mavericks right after it, almost seemed like another joke. :D

Yeah, stupid name. I'm not from California but I can imagine there are plenty of other things there that would have sounded better. Maybe OS X Coronado.

Im disappointed they didn't keep the cat theme. OSX Lynx or OSX Calico sounds better than Mavericks. Is the next one going to be OSX Lakers?

So, call it 10.9 instead if you don't like the name. Nobody's forcing you to call it Mavericks.

Nobody liked "Wii" either (much dumber than Mavericks) and yet, it didn't stop it from becoming a world-wide brand overnight with everybody getting used to it.

But there's no reason to stick to Cali. They're an international company, expand your thought process.

I think they doubled down on the fact that they are a California-based company; how many times today did we see the "Designed in California" imagery?

I dislike that it sounds plural. Like if if it had been "Mac OS Mountain Lions."

I know it's not plural, but it's sure going to sound that way to 99% of the people out there.

I don't hate it, but I think that's kind of a weird thing.

I agree. OS X Maverick sounds better, but makes less sense. Although mavericks doesn't make all that much sense to begin with.

I don't hate the name but the theme itself is a bit self-contained.

I guess it's no more arbitrary than big cat names though!

Although mavericks doesn't make all that much sense to begin with.

It never will. And watch the forums over the next 6 months. I bet half the posts here will be wording it as simply "Maverick" and the other half will be correcting them. :)

At first I thought Apple was using it to encapsulate the uniqueness of the OS X coding team... like in the 80's when Steve raised the pirate flag.
