Well, now they will know about it.

Will that or will they think its named after the NBA team?

Its not a unique name, and it does not lend itself to branding. The more I think about it, the more I think apple messed up on this.

I think they doubled down on the fact that they are a California-based company; how many times today did we see the "Designed in California" imagery?

Very true. A California company for sure but not about getting rid of jobs in the US. Design and assembly of one machine in the US except for all those other lost jobs. I don't want this to get political so I will shut it. :)

I suspect our new operating system was actually named after Mel Gibson and James Garner.

The issue is lack of name recognition. I'm from Boston and I had no idea. I suspect it means even less to OSX customers outside of the US

Reminds me of the McCain/Palin presidential campaign. I can't say I like it, but seeing as that's the only complaint I have with 10.9 so far, I'm happy.

(But seriously, will 10.9 be able to see Russia from my webcam?)

It's a pretty famous spot. If nothing else, the name forces you to do some research and learn something new. I think it's a great idea, but I'm from California so maybe I'm biased. Greatest State in the U.S.!

They didn't mess up. It's a great spot, and a fantastic reason to use it: show off our proud history and also building a Mac Pro in the U.S. They're going for an emotional tie in if you couldn't tell.

I think it's a wonderful name

I agree it's a great name.

But let's not forget the haters will always go out of their way to attempt to disrupt things. At least they're trying a new target and not the well worn "but Android this or that".

Apple has done an excellent job of naming it. Now if they can continue to be successful with the refinements, it will be very encouraging.

There is A LOT that is "more epic" than Mavericks in California. One thing to consider is not that people hate it but even people in California may not identify with it. Not everyone in CA surfs or has even heard of Mavericks. I think someone mentioned it in another thread, but state capitols would have worked very well.

There certainly IS NOT a lot of things more epic than Mavericks in California. How is state capitals going to work well when Apple specifically mentioned they're going to use names of things specific to California.

I had no idea what Mavericks meant before this but now that I know what it means I still loathe it. Absolutely the worst name Apple has come up with that I can remember. Huge mistake.

Nah. Next after this would be:

Mac OS X Weed.

Backed by the Snoop Doggy^WDogg^WLion money-bizzle guarantizzle.

BL.

P.S. Weed is a town in California.

To be honest, Sea Lion sounds better than Mavericks. The way he brought it up as a joke, then showing Mavericks right after it, almost seemed like another joke. :D

I liked Sea Llion, AND it went with the water theme.

There is nothing more epic that's California themed than Mavericks.

From what I remember, I did enjoy James Gardner in reruns of Maverick.

For the rest of us not living in CA and don't remember the show or sports teams, mavericks are the ones who tend to cause one trouble, like when they fired upon me from 10 miles away. I would have expected more research in choosing a well known positive sounding name.

Redwoods, Sequoias, Gold Rush, Disneyland, bubble headed bleach blonde, Muscle Beach, Golden Gate, Hollywoodland, Santa Cruz, Alcatraz, SUV, and Terminator are all more California sounding to outsiders than Maverick. This is especially true of Vitamin-D deprived support staff personnel, such as myself. Focus group across the country prior the OSX announcement and ask, "Which one is more California? Maverick, or Reno?", and Reno likely would have won.

They should call it Sea Lion. I know I am going to. Apple can then transition later to mammals or sea life.

I'm ambivalent about the name, but I would have preferred constellations instead. "OS X Orion" sounds cool and it would've continued their space thing they have going.

Tom Cruise killed the name in 1986 and the John McCain and Sarah Palin dug up its corpse, **** on it and buried it again in 2008. The end.

You know what, I totally agree.

 They only lost one Jobs.... +1 for Sea Lion (hopefully that will catch on as a nickname)

How dare they change it from big cat!

Makes me wonder if Sea Lion was actually going to be its codename for awhile before they realized it should be changed!

Yeah. How dare they are to change it from big cat! Even though I think the OS to be great. I hate to say this but I am sure Steve Jobs' era won't use this name. I hope this is only a mistake and they can learn from this (our reaction about the name).
