I'm not happy with OSX Mavericks and here's why - [1] We just went from jungle cats to places in California and we haven't even made it to OSXI. [2] Stuck on the name: not everyone has been to California let alone Mavericks. I'm sure it has a special place in their hearts but it is not universal.

That doesn't make sense since nobody cares about a lion or snow leopard anyway as far as having some "special place" in their heart.

I've seen a Lion before and a Panther and a Leopard. I shouldn't have to ask "what's a Mavericks?" - because it's so specific to California it feels pretentious and self-centered. I can't believe one of the best marketers in the world just did that

Pretentious? Wow, now you are just throwing random insults to see what sticks.

[4] Still stuck on the name: Call it something inspiring! Something that dares people to dream. Something that is a beauty of nature, science or even space. I think Steve Jobs wouldn't have liked this naming scheme even being a California native. It's not universal! Here's a product that will be shipped all around the world and you call it Mavericks. Not everyone is a surfer either. It excludes people. When I saw the wave I had hope in a new naming scheme but now I'm just annoyed.

Here we go again.... Steve Jobs isn't running Apple anymore. Also Mavericks is inspiring, go check it out sometime when it's breaking. It doesn't get more nature-y than that. You don't have to be a surfer to appreciate it. I'm glad you're annoyed.

No, they said CA names will hold them for the next ten years.

Really? I was taking care of two kids at the time, must have misheard then :) I really thought they said they were using location based names and started with a Californian one because that's where they are...

It is a meaningless as Intel code names.

No. That's not code name. Unless they change it to be. Mountain lion is not a code name. Snow Leopard, Leopard, Tiger are all names of the OSX.

Microsoft Windows 95 had a code name "Chicago" before they debut. But this is not the case here.

They use the name "Mavericks" remind me the company is now lack of leadership internally. PRs, PMs, CEO may all making decisions based on compromise of others. I think it's risky.

Jonathan Ive should have more Apple gene, he need to step ahead.

He said it was as pointless as the codenames, not that they were codenames in themselves.

Also, I doubt a name signals a 'lack of leadership'. It's pretty cool if you ask me, and I'm sure if SJ announced it, everyone would love it...

I have a better idea: How about NOT naming the thing something 90% of America is going to free associate with hyperventilating politicians (or, for you older folks, cowboys and horses). They had to market test this name, didn't they? It's one thing naming OS' after a string of cats--at least their names are nouns, and they operate with ease and grace. But naming it something defined as either a calf, an attitude, or a rebel? Not to mention a surfing destination? Somebody needs to channel Steve over there.

(OK, maybe 90% is over the top, but still a lot will remember it that way)

Mavericks is a surfing spot in Half Moon Bay, CA that produces some of the biggest waves on the PLANET. A place somewhere close to Cupertino and probably the most famous surf spot in California.

There is nothing more epic that's California themed than Mavericks.

If you have a better idea, let's hear it.

When saw the name it just reminded me of an OS that I used before bearing the same name. After searching i found that UBUNTU 10.10 was actually called MAVERICK MEERKAT. In french that will be called "du deja vu". Despite the plural form that Apple used they could really find something new.

I wonder how you read his mind? Is that truly what you wanted to say, Cube?
I doubt too. Like I said, SJ won't use that name, because he know what he's doing. I'm sure SJ would use Sea Lion instead of Mavericks.

Because of the meme-factor. The subliminity of a name. What characteristics does a name evoke when you read it, or think it? The cats were great because cats evoke everything from obsessive cleanliness, to efficient movement, blazing speed, etc. What does 'Mavericks' evoke in those not familiar with surf vernacular? The charitable answer would be: all kinds of things, many of which
might not be favorable or relevant to the product or the company. Of course, since memes are ephemeral, a good ad campaign can make the whole issue moot, by focusing on why Apple named it that...cue the slo-mo of 10meter tubular surf off the West coast somewhere with cruising surfers...

But in the end, you're right. If the thing works, no one's gonna give a damn.

Why do people care what it's called? As long as it works how i want it to, then i dont care what they called it.

At first I thought it was a bad name because many people outside of California and most people outside of the US don't have a clue about Mavericks. For me, it's a synonym to Rebels and I noticed many people call it Maverick. Now however I think it might be a good name because it's different and it makes people talk about it. I don't think that would have happened if it was called something more "common" like OS X Cupertino or OS X Silicon Valley.

I like the name very much, including it being plural. For folks that say most don't know the location it references... trust me, Apple thought of that... Mavericks DOES mean something to most people and to Apple they think that applies too!

Well sure it does. But most people's interpretation of it is different than what Apple intended. Apple's own dictionary coins "Mavericks" as an unbranded calf. :D

Honestly, I just think a bunch of ex-surfer loons in the employee break room came up with this and stuffed the suggestion box.

That's what I meant. No need for mind reading. It's written there.

Why you would say "It is as meaningless as Intel code names"?

Now as we know it's not a code name.

With logic, it should be read: It's not a code name, therefore it's not meaningless.

Somebody correct me...:D

It = the name

"The name is as meaningless as Intel code names"

To you maybe..

Why people gathering here talk about it??

It's definitely not meaningless to Apple and to most of Mac users (oh yeah maybe mac fans, had SJ successfully made us his fans :p). Remember as APPLE have been trying to market its OSX especially in the past decade while windows dominated PC I think it was before Leopard/Tiger. Do you guys remember the days: "hi I am Mac, and I am PC...."

You wouldn't say SJ named those big cats as meaningless as Intel code names, would you?

No, because big cats mean something globally, unlike obscure locations.

The name doesn't bother me... what bothers me is:

"Can't innovate any more my @$$"

Innovate by doing more than incremental OS upgrades. We are on OS 10.9. It has been OSX for so long most people don't realize it is OS 10 and not "X". Make OS 11 FFS.

People are really getting annoyed with the names of an OS? Why? It doesn't actually have any effect on the usage of it. If someone asks what OS I run on my computer I tell them I run either OS X, Mac OS, Mac OS X, OS 10.x or Mac OS 10.x (at the minute, 10.8) and I will continue to do so when 10.9 comes out. Very few people will call it Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks when it is actually released.

It's a name, It doesn't matter. Microsoft have had some stupid names and Android still has stupid names (I'm an Android user, not hating on it)

Just enjoy the new features and forget what it's called, people :p
