I think most people are upset that the design is largely playing catchup. This would've been a great design maybe last year, but there are already phones out just as good if not better than this one, and within 2-3 months apple will fall behind the curve even more.

How does design play catchup? Design is subjective, there is no real measurement to say one is catching up to another.

I would much rather have a unibody aluminum chassis over a polycarbonate chassis.

it is a good phone and a good upgrade for some people. However, when you have a 4S that already feels fast and hell and will have IOS6, LTE is the ONLY new feature. Internals are important, but not when you already have a beast phone.

...and lets be honest....no one is upgrading for the .5 increase. That is just a bonus if you already plan on it.

You should change your name to "Status_Quo", I can't believe it looks essentially the same for the past 3 years now other than materials and height. BORING!

A product doesn't have to change dramatically to be dramatic. To many, the 911 is STILL the pinnacle of automotive beauty (50+ years later).

NFC is pointless right now, Google Wallet is having a hard time with carriers.. Verizon blocked Google Wallet from devices on its network, Apple doesn't mess around in those type of waters.. Wireless charging.. lol that's why your upset? Your silly..

Yeah, I might have found some uses for it regarding all the non-transactional stuff people discussed, but for transactions it's useless in my area. Not a huge loss.

Haha, I'm not upset! That would indeed be silly.

All I was suggesting is that there are upgrades that would make a significant difference, not just an incremental upgrade. NFC may very well be useless in the US (although I don't believe it is) but here in the UK and Europe, contactless payments are becoming very much commonplace. Beyond payments, NFC is just an excellent way to communicate and share.

Apple doesn't generally innovate with internal tech. It's more about integration with ios and other apple devices.

Agreed

iOS is the innovation that is still ahead of the curve

That's the beauty of the closed system model

in terms of hardware it's also quality over quantity

also i must say android is an amazing open system and
I thoroughly enjoy the community and OS on my HP Touchpad!

...and here comes the spin.

Gotta soften that blow somehow.

And people here call me crazy for suggesting Apple stock is going to be half next year at this time. lol

That would be a huge blow to Apple if that were true. Don't think the stock will drop by half.

Personally, the only thing I don't like about the 5 is that it is longer only and not wider. I am very happy with the LTE and the chip. I don't care about the NFC or wireless charging. If I had the 4s, I wouldn't upgrade, just like I didn't upgrade from the 4 to 4s. I'll probably be getting this.

Agreed - NFC and wireless charging are both neat, but utterly useless technologies. I have NEVER seen an NFC terminal in any store I frequent (locally or travelling), and likely won't before the next generation of devices are out. Why should Apple waste R/D resources on a technology that may never take off?

On the wireless charging bit, it's cool, absolutely. But given that the device has to be on/near something plugged into the wall, how is that any more useful than just plugging the device DIRECTLY into the wall? And if you need to pick up the phone to call/text/whatever, wouldn't the phone stop charging (vs. a plug)? Isn't that actually LESS efficient?

I love this fact. Most Android phones don't fit comfortably in my hand b/c they're simply too wide. I'm glad they made the screen taller without increasing the width.

The point is that a phone should it one one hand, that alone makes the experience better than holding a wide phone.. Sorry I dont have Shaq hands.

This is so ridiculous.

I seriously can't imagine what design would be "better" - the complainers are obviously more worried about their phone's aesthetics than its functionality. It is a smartphone, not a piece of fashion. Do you pick up chicks with your iPhone or something?

I just can't even imagine making the iPhone design "better," because it is totally functional and still looks good to me. I'm upgrading from the iPhone 4, so every little thing about this piece of technology is a major upgrade - and it is still a significant upgrade from the iPhone 4S.

Well I bet you could find an exception to almost every opinion on the net if you looked hard enough but if you're happy with the design then fine, I'm disappointed personally and it appears quite a few are.

For me, those concept images (not the leaks), really set the bar and tone. I think, the 5, is a nice looking phone. But there are too many appealing conceptual designs Apple could have gone with.

The features, on the other hand, are very nice. It's definitely a step up. But not big enough for me to upgrade. The sad of the matter is, likely, this design will be with us through next year and will have to wait 'till 2014 for a revamp on design.

As always, functionality is far more important than form, for me at least, but it would've been nice to have something aesthetically new.

This world is made up of two types of buyers, Functionality or Aesthetics, then comes Price - Price Conscious or Not. So for those wanting something different, I understand completely.

Internals always get upgraded on the "s" cycle, I guess for the people holding out for this iPhone, they were expecting more. The galaxy S3 incorporated features like stay smart etc, its almost like the competition are catching up and taking over and Apple don't care?

I just don't see a path to that. Your disappointment in what was announced aside....Apple's products continue to sell well. The fact that this doesn't somehow measure up to your expectations is not quite enough for the company to lose half it's value in a year. This will especially be the case when the new devices sell through like they inevitably will.

I'm wondering this as well. People are always claiming that the gs3 and 2-3 other androids are so far ahead of iPhone in innovation and everything. I'm anxious to know what these "innovations" and features are that make it so much better.

And no a giant screen is not innovative.

The screen shuts off when you don't look at it.. WOW! Awesome! I can't even look at my TV for about 3 seconds now, right?

actually it is

Everyone whined and complained about the iPhone 3GS, and it was considered the best smart phone and everyone loved and wanted it

Same happened for the 4, and then the 4S.

When the iPhone 5 first got leaked way back in the beginning of the year before there was anything to back them up, I hated the design. As time went on I started to warm up to it, and now actually seeing how Apple is using it, I'm absolutely in love with it. I'm trying to talk my mom into giving me her upgrade so I can get the iPhone 5 and she gets my 4S!

LOL even the iPod touch got a bigger revamp (vs. last generation) than the iPhone 5 did (vs. iPhone 4S). I almost feel embarassed for Apple.

Exactly.

I don't know why this is so hard for people to understand.

It's simple...when the first iPhone came out, it was almost universally lauded. Most releases were, then detractors started making their voices heard on the 4s release.

Now, with this nearly unacceptable "upgrade", more and more people are going to realize that there is much better hardware available elsewhere.
