Since this happens pretty much with every single product anymore, do people who complain and say how they have an "imperfect" device just give up and not use it, or end up keeping it and using it until the next thing they can complain about is released?

I see some people who return dozens until they find "just the right one", but for the rest, do they just return one and decide not to bother?

I just wonder what happens after the initial ragegasm over gamut-gate/saturation-gate/yellow-gate/washed-out-gate passes. I guess if I got something and was so unhappy with it I'd just not keep it rather than going out of my way to be disappointed and angry over and over again.

And for the people who are saying how unacceptable this is because they need to do "real work" on it, did Apple ever say this $400 device was intended to be used in place of very expensive professional photo editing equipment? I'm pretty sure it was meant to read/surf the web/play Angry Birds on the toilet.

Some people aren't affected by the nerd-rage-gate and unless there is an obvious problem like a couple of dead pixels or chipped anodizing they just happily go about using their device.

I'm glad your nearly 20 years as a lawyer makes you an expert on screen saturation while professionals have said, "[The iPad Air's] Absolute Color Accuracy and Image Contrast fidelity are both very good" source.

But clearly it MUST be that the color is over saturated "...yuck".

I'm all for you loving your mini and using you iPad 3 As a "toilet tablet" but you're not an expert on color gamut, LCD panels nor a professional tech reviewer, and neither am I but I'm not the one criticizing the iPad Air's panel while saying (on a thread that is claiming that the RMini's panel is inferior) that the rMini's panel is actually superior (by stating that the Air's panel is over saturated you infer that the RMini's is then accurate).

Ok. I've figured it out. You're an idiot who needs everything spelled out for you:

1) I never claimed to be an expert in LCDs, or said that one was more accurate than the other. The Air looks oversaturated TO ME. Just as you appear to be an oversensitive moron TO ME. Does that help clarify it for you? Those are opinions.....by their very definition they can be neither right nor wrong. Just my opinions.

2) I said that the Air's display REMINDED me of, not was exactly like, the Samsung displays, and the "yuck" referred those Samsung displays, not the Air. Read it again, or better yet, have someone smarter read it to you. So the perceived slight that has your panties in a bunch was not actually for the Air but the Samsung phones, which was again just my opinion. Hopefully that helps clarify it for you.

3) This thread is about whether the "perfect" Retina Mini display exists. You were too busy defending the Air's honor to realize that I don't give a rat's ass about "perfect" displays, on the Air or Mini. If you reread my post, you will see that I described my personal observations having two Minis in front of me, and Mini display that I'm keeping has the same yellow screen that many here are complaining about. My post, including the part about the Air's screen, was constructed entirely of MY PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS. Get it now???

So let's review: you claimed that I was justifying my purchase (wrong), claimed that I said the Air's display was "yuck" (wrong), and claimed I was rendering an factual statement on the saturation accuracy of the Air's display (wrong). I've never met anyone incapable of distinguishing between fact and opinion before....you must be a hoot at parties.

How's this. Top left to right: Nexus 7 2013, iPad Retina Mini, iPad Air, Dell Venue 8 Pro. Bottom is my iPhone 5s and the regular iPad Minis.

There's going to be sample variations. Even my desktop monitors of identical model, I have one that's warmer than the other. The shot was taken with an RX100. All on max brightness. I didn't bother to adjust the white balance, but they are whiter in person. Actually I'm looking at this shot on my warmer monitor (Dell U2410) so it might look whiter on your monitor.

The only iPad I have exchanged is the rMini. The first one I got the top was blue and bottom was yellow. I have also had yellow iPhone 4 and 4S, but at least it was uniform, I didn't exchange those.

PS no I'm not keeping all these tablets. The Nexus and the old black Mini are going to the inlaws ;) The Dell is very impressive.

...There's going to be sample variations.

Unfortunately a single shot doesn't really prove anything. You would have to increase the sample size to get any meaningful results.

Nice camera BTW.

I just looked at your photo and the iPad's screen looks a little warm, but since the white bezel also looks yellow its hard to say what is culprit.

I'm pretty sure its been reviewed and stated by more knowledgeable people than I that the new retina minis have BETTER color reproduction than the original mini, but not as good as the iPad Air (or even iPad 4).

So what? This whole comparison thing is absurd - especially given the variety of panels that are used in manufacturing (LG, Sharp, Samsung). If you look at the display and think it doesn't look good, don't buy it.

But to purchase it, be perfectly fine with it then read somewhere on the internet that SOMEONE says its not perfect and frantically try to compare to other tablets is a bit nonsensical don't you think?

Well I for one can't tell a thing from this image because the bottom right device doesn't show the google page! :D

Totally kidding you, thank you for posting this. I found it helpful to see all the devices in comparison!

So glad I'm not like this. A dead pixel is one thing, but this is just going beyond mental.

There are plenty of people for whom caring about a dead pixel is beyond mental.

The very fact that you're a forum member of an Apple discussion site is beyond mental to some people, who are so glad they're not like you.

Why do people think their opinions of the level of scrutiny of others are even worth typing? No one cares. There's always someone who thinks the exact same thing about YOU.

Contrast

I read that in the accessibility options there is a contrast option. Has anyone tried to turn it on and see if it makes a difference.

Looking now, there is an option here under Accessibility to "increase contrast" and it's a toggle on/off. It's not readily apparent if it makes a big difference (or any difference at all) so I'll play around with it. Maybe others can chime in with their reactions.

Can you take pics and compare a retina ipad. Even an iphone would do.

These threads are getting fragmented, but here's my rMini on the left and my iPhone 5 on the right. If you don't see a noticeable difference, I feel badly for you. It's like they forgot to turn on half the color or something.

Okay, so one is more saturated than the other. There is a difference that you can see side by side. That is so irrelevant its not even funny. The real question is - turn OFF the iPhone and look at the Mini - does the screen displease you? Then return it. Easy. The Mini is not an iPhone. The Mini is not an Air. The Mini is, well, a Mini. There is no option to adjust the colors to suit individual preferences. You get what you get. If what you get is not something you LIKE, you need to decide who much it displeases you and whether you need to return it.

Most people will look at the screen on the left, by itself, and say it looks just fine. Most normal people don't operate a Mini next to an iPhone. I mean, most humans only have two hands, so you need one to hold the thing and another to operate it, so basically you will be looking at ONE screen.

I wish color profiles were user selectable so we could pick the one we like. But they are not. I also wish the iPad had a USB connector, and HDMI connector, and an SD card slot. But it doesn't. So I either accept that limitation or go get myself another tablet that does not have that limitation.

Yes, I noticed it immediately on the demo model in the store, having nothing to do with my iPhone. But it's difficult in a photograph to convey how something looks without something else to compare it to. The lighting, the angle, the camera settings - even your monitor settings - will all have an impact. With the iPhone being a reference point in the picture, you can see where the rMini is lacking. Badly.

Yes the screen displeases me by itself and I'm going back and forth but I will probably end up returning it. I'm just disappointed because it's taken them 5 cycles of iPads before they made one I was interested in (even before "retina" iPhones existed I thought the original iPads looked like crap, and I don't like the 10" form factor). Now we've got an 8" with great resolution and I was stoked, but the colors look awful (to me, or at least on the one I got). Clearly if they can make screens on the iPhone and the iPad Air with proper gamut, there's no reason they shouldn't be able to for the rMini. I guess I just wait another cycle. It just feels like a complete waste of time.

Many thanks for this thread. I was planning on buying a mini retina but now I've changed my mind. I'll either get an iPad Air OR wait until next year (the latter is more probable). If they develop a 13" iPad Pro I'll get THAT instead.

So if I told a baker that their chocolate cupcake "reminds" me of dog poop (yuck) I'm not insulting the baker cause the cupcake isn't dog poop... is that right?

Lawyer logic...

EDIT: no doubt you'll come back with the argument that cup cakes and dog poop aren't in the same ball park... so let's change it to "HOSTESS DING DONGS"... and it's still just as insulting to the baker at end of the day.

The iPad Air IS NOT over saturated. The iPad Mini w/ Retina is under saturated "in comparison" but still looks fantastic. Once you get that all will be better... also unclench your anus, you're going to give yourself a heart attack.

Right. Because those two analogies are exactly alike.

You know, I just realized that I broke my own rule: never argue with an idiot. Eventually they drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

I'll let you go....I know you have a busy day ahead of you challenging the opinions of other posters in other threads regarding their observations of the saturation level of the Air.

"The gamut screen disappointed. As with the previous version, Retina-screen new iPad mini does not reach the standard sRGB. The primary colors are shifted in a shade, and they lack depth. This makes the image faded and less reliable than on the screens fit with sRGB."

But they also say… "In general, the screen Apple iPad mini was an obvious improvement - high resolution Retina. A small increase in contrast, too happy."

For people who may not know, yes the iPad DOES have USB, HDMI, and SD card capability. Are they built into the device making it heaver, larger, and more expensive? No they are not.

ha... called it... see EDIT in previous post... (posted at the exact same time as your post) You're not only bad at arguments you're completely predictable as well... clearly my assumptions about you are dead on!

You're the one writing long dissertations to "idiots on the internet"...

My answers are brief and to the point... with not personal blows, I'm only making my points... it takes one of a certain intellectual prowess to resort to calling people names when in a debate... a low one.

LAWYERED AGAIN!

Ummmm, hate to break it to you, but if you are talking about the infamous camera connection kit, that thing has a very narrow focus and use. It's not like I can connect a USB keyboard or save my documents in an SD card. It's the Apple way or the high way, so saying the iPad has USB and SD card capability is a bit of a stretch.

No according to some people in this thread it's not the Mini that is Under saturated it's the Air that is Over saturated... silly russians... :p
