My comment was not about OS updates per se but OS features. Often very desirable features do not work or do not work fully on generations of A-series devices even only a few years old. It's part of what drives that "long in tooth" spin we post as part of motivating ourselves we need the new one. That and that mysterious "slow down" effect over time.

It works WELL in motivating us to replace perfectly-good tech with "latest & greatest"... and I expect the very same strategy to be used with M-series tech. It's very profitable.

There's no attack on Apple here... just pointing out why my own long-term preference of iMac probably flips to a screen-less desktop Mac plus SEPARATE screen... since I suspect the usefulness of the screen will far outlive even a M2 MAX desktop Mac.

Maybe Apple will anticipate this too and build a bigger iMac with a resurrected Target Display mode? Or- let's really get crazy here- the ability to swap the computing guts in a few years but keep using the same, great screen?

What an incredible year. Congratulations to all the amazing people at Apple.

It’s amazing, when one steps back, to think about the number of industries that Apple has transformed and the enormous companies which have been kicked to the curb from the hand of Apple innovation. From music to camera to telecommunications to computing to chipsets. Thank heaven Apple is so privacy and innovation focused.
Hi Tim :D
How are those glasses and that car coming along?

The new big iMac will most likely have a chin and not likely be more than 29-30 ins. The vocal minority will howl in derision.

Then the redesigned MacBook Air will have white bezels and be available in multiple hues. The vocal minority will again lament in excess.

In both cases the “naysayers” will also descend to tell us how brainwashed and easily duped we are and that the new machines are essentially crap.

And it won’t matter how impressive the features and performance will be.

Really looking forward to seeing what Apple does with the 27" iMac in 2022, hopefully in the first half of the year. Been aching to upgrade my '19 Intel iMac. A new design is a given, so perhaps we'll finally witness a modern, chinless iMac.
I think the chin is likely part of Apple's design language for the iMac and it seems unlikely that Apple would totally get rid of it.

While I generally lean with your thinking here, there were formally "chins" at the bottom of all iDevices. And Apple opted to change that to fit bigger screens (plus speakers) in similar-sized spaces. If Apple can get over the concept of a stationary desktop having to be "thinner," any chin-driven requirements could be worked into the Z-dimension of a potential, all-screen iMac revision.

Again, I don't expect it. I expect basically bigger iMac 24"... possibly even with white bezels. But it COULD happen.

I'm so glad apple finally gave some real attention to the macs.
After years of focus on the iPhone and iPad, it finally feels like it's the age of the mac.

Just because something is technically possible does not mean that they will do it.
It might happen eventually, but definitely not in 2022.
Expect feature parity with the new MacBook pros. So a mini LED display with 120 Hz, M1Pro/max with most likely the option for a duel M1max to get up to 128 GB of RAM like the current 27 inch iMac offers, and a Touch ID keyboard.
Those features alone will be enough for sure, but I figured the only limiting factor in adding FaceID to an Apple product is the thinness of the surface the sensors are integrated into (where the MBP's are too thin). We'll see!

I sold my 2015 15" MBP and I actually made a $50 profit from when I bought it used back in 2015. $50 profit might not sound like much but that was the first time I bought something, used it for five years and actually made a slight profit. I sold it to buy my M1 MBA and I have been super happy since then. I first bought a MBA back in 2012 and it was fine for what little I do which is mainly online bill pay, YouTube and web browsing. But I have to say my M1 MBA has some serious balls when compared to my first MBA. I have it hooked up to a 27" 4K monitor and it does everything I need it to do without flinching.

Now my dilemma will be when the new, redesigned MBA comes out next year. I know I'm gonna want it but I also know I won't need it. Sometimes my wants and needs tend to cloud my better judgement a lot. lol

Nice, but when will there be an option for more RAM in Apple Silicon Mac mini?
According to your signature, you're still rocking 8GBs in your upgradable 2014 MacMini. Hard to believe that 16GBs wouldn't be plenty for your use =)

The next logical step would be M1 Max for iMac 27". ( or iMac Pro ).

Then M2 on 3nm in 2022 November for iPad Pro and MacBook 14"? This should be in time for LPDDR5X as well meaning you could fit 64GB on a MacBook / MacBook Air. Or will Apple play the conservative route and only use 4nm for the whole 2022?

Using 3nm for MacBook and possibly Mac Pro make sense because it is low volume, and can used as pipe cleaning. But the Mask and design doesn't align with any other HP and HE Core Design.

Interesting to see what will happen.

The iMac 24 has been out for some months now and we are still waiting for our display demo (supposedly a blue one) to show off. We actually have a silver iMac 24 in stock, but our GM doesn’t want to demo it so it can be sold. If we demo it then customers will have to order any iMacs as supply to stores are still constrained. But if we have nothing on display then you can’t generate any first-hand interest in the device. Arrgh!

Bummer as me and my coworkers are anxious to see the new iMac for real. And I have no interest in driving up to Ottawa and dealing with their traffic just to visit the local Apple Store to see the ones they have on display.

Well, except for some scanning work I am rarely using the 2014 MM now... It simply doesn't have enough juice.
But yes, maybe you are right about the 16 GB of RAM.

Sadly, I don't have the option, to try out an M1 machine.

Hope the bigger iMacs or later generations of the 24 are chinless and not trying to make them as thin as possible.

Think I really had a bad time swapping up and whilst the M1 is impressive, I am left somewhat underwhelmed (the iPad Pro is sweet though).

Oh well. Onwards and upwards Rodney.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple is already working on it. Wasn’t there a report out, Apple was working on in-house chips for the iPhones? Couple years ago?
Because Apple just pulled M1 out of their hat, without any expertise, right?
They are making their chips for iPhone and iPad like, for about 7 years already?
Apple Silicon M1, and all it’s iterations are “just” scaled up versions of iPhone processors.

And no, TSMC is manufacturer, not designer of their chips. I’m pretty sure Apple is giving TSMC plenty of financial support when building factory for new manufacturing process (ie 7 nm to 5 nm) and p,enty of expertise and provide TSMC with the assistance. Close collaboration of both together.
TSMC building their new factory in Arizona isn’t just because they want to look nice in eyes of US government. Apple might be their sole user of that facility.

I wonder if Apple will bring Chips like M1, M1 Pro or Pro Max to the iPhone series? Imagine how big of a transition it would be.
It would be like adding a V8 engine to a moped. Someone might do it but not sure you'd want to actually ride that.
