Tom Tom App

Hiya
Im new here on these forums.
Chris here from NZ and I have just received Notification of Tom Tom Maps being available in the NZ app store for $119
Yes they are and I will probably get it.
In comparison Sygic do a combination set of maps for both NZ and Australia for $84 in comparison.
No word yet on pricing for the additional pricing either
Yes its 0200 hrs here

A$99.99 (which is what it probably will be) is WAAAYY cheaper than a stand-alone unit.

Maybe in AUS and NZ, but not in the US. You can pick up various Tom Tom ONE models for < $120. And that includes a mounting kit and charger.

I'm all for integration, but not at those prices.
I think CoPilot price point of $35 is closer to the mark, but eventual they will find a < $20 sweet-spot.

cheaper

I actually dont' buy these screen shots, they images look a bit stretched, as if ported and smoothed from a regular TT device screenshot.

Also, I think the pricing won't match up. I still say we will see TT for less than 75$ in the USA

VAT in NZ is currently 12.5%, which would be included in these prices. So, it would make it technically UNDER 80$, or less considering pricing thresholds.

That's the whole point. Turn-by-turn GPS apps MUST provide their own map tiles. If you have a 3G or 3GS it will work anywhere, regardless of whether you have mobile connectivity available or not.

Please explain how $99.99 is cheaper than a stand alone.

I can find stand alone units for less than that and the company that makes them has to pay for the screen, electronics, case, charger, MAPS, and R&D.

In the case of an iPhone App we are talking epenses such as R&D and MAPS. In comparizon to the above unit and the list of manuf expenses, an App Store turn by turn application should be a lot cheaper or they are realy putting the screws on us and not passing any of the hardware savings.

I see where you guys are coming from but I think the whole point for everyone, including myself, is to have an all-in-one device. I for one dont want to carry a GPS, iPod and a phone around. :)

I don't carry my GPS around either. It stays in the damn car. And passengers can play with the iPhone/iPod Touch while the GPS does its job. Can I see a case for device integration? Sure. But if it costs MORE than the various component parts? Forget it.

What TomTom are saying here - is that the device you buy from them now, is worth exactly £0.

Well, my GPS is installed on my dash by Honda.

But i'd also much rather be able to use my Phone/Touch for it's purposes (or as it would be in my car, the kids playing a game while mommy missed her turn) and have a unit i leave in the car.

I have a friend with a Garmin that uses it for music & nav, and returned the Touch she got for Mother's Day. I don't get that - because i really don't want to carry around my Garmin in my pocket to listen to music.

it's just a very personal choice.....

BUt the price of this is kinda OUCH. I'd LIKE to have some sort of offline maps for my Touch though..... (and i'm in the camp that the next version WILL have a GPS chip in it).

what a terrible looking UI. I like the route information but the map UI is just bad. I'm glad I went with MobileNavigator.

Limitation of buying this app

This is only good if you are in a AT&T network area, right? If you are out of range, then it is of no use, but buying a real Tom Tom that you mount to dashboard works using satellite. If this is so, why would I spend this much money for something that stops working when I go on a road trip on the coast or in the mountains?
Just my 2¢

I just hope some Mac Internet Magazine, gets a hold of all the versions of turn by turn apps and does an unbiased comparizon and review of the products including driving in cities, suburband, off roads, woods, etc.

These are not 5 bucks apps, I would not buy any until there is a side by side comprehensive evaluation of the products.

I would also be interestedd in products that take advantage of the address book, why should I enter addresses in two places?

FACEPALM

Turn-by-turn GPS apps MUST provide their own map tiles. It will work anywhere so long as you can see the sky and have an iPhone 3G or 3GS.

Lol an all in one device. Right. This is designed to work with all this junk they listed.

car mount
enhanced GPS receiver
built-in speaker
power cables
an audio output jack, as well as a microphone

I'm hoping this is all in one piece. But still...just ANOTHER hunk of plastic you are carrying around. Me, I have a tomtom that stays in my car. Period. If I need maps outside of my car well...that's what the iphone can be great for.
It's still an All-N-One because only the device counts, not the mount. All of the stuff you list is in the mount and if you go someplace now you have to take your mount.

I'm hoping that it will be comparable to the GO740 and you'll have an option to order traffic.

The main thing you won't have, unless TomTom got apple to allow it, is having the GPS work while your on the phone or playing music.

Nope, it works everywhere. it's what you'd call a 'real GPS'.

Greedy

I don't get it.

The solution requires a standalone unit to work to it's full potential. I'd leave that bit in the car, just as I would a dedicated unit.

The solution is more expensive than TomTom One in my country.

I was quite excited about this until I saw the price, which just makes no sense at all.

Still can't find it in the AU store.

Has anyone else seen it?

This reminds me of the last iPhone OS Update, I stayed up until 3am just to get copy&paste and now I hardly use it :D

I will stay up for another hour and probably get TomTom if available :)

Tom Tom counterpunch to Co-Pilot???

As I am installing the Co-pilot app I downloaded last night, I am wondering if this is a move by Tom Tom to prevent all the people who have been waiting and waiting for TT from jumping ship and buying Co-pilot. I know I was waiting since last year, but finally the reviews and pricepoint of Co-pilot made me stop waiting for TT and go with the competition.

Far to expensive in my view.

I have a stand alone TT, and downloaded CoPilot for the iphone at a cost of £26.99. It works brilliantly and so far I have had no problems.

Thanks TomTom but not this time. :):)
