TomTom for iPhone Appears in New Zealand App Store

For me it's whether or not the TomTom cradle works really well as an "iPhone Car Cradle"... That way I'm getting another bit of convergence out of the deal (even when i'm not using the GPS app, is it just a nice way to charge and listen to my iPhone while I'm driving?). With a standalone GPS i need a mount/charger for that AND a mount/charger (or at least a charger) for my iPhone.

I bought the Navigon app a few days ago. I got tired of waiting for TomTom and dealing with their BS. The Navigon app works great for me. Never had a single issue with it. The directions are always precise and if they add live traffic in the next update, it will be perfect.

I really wanted the TomTom so I could get that mount as well, but turns out the GPS works just fine without the extra GPS the TomTom mount is providing.

Kind of exepensive

Of course, since they lose the hardware sale (and profit), they have to price the bits pretty high. It needs to be really really good at that price.

Rental cars

I've had two trips to sunny CA in the last month and dragged my Garmin GPS and related hardware with me both times. I get lost driving home at least once a week so having the Garmin device really helped with my travels.

The point to me of this software, and others like it, is about taking one less thing in my bag when I hit the road. It also means when riding with a "Navless" friend in his or her car, we can still find our way.

I paid $70 for the Navigon app and provided it works at 85% of its advertised value, regrets will never cling to this decision.

Can someone confirm if Text-To-Speech is available in this version? It would be really nice if it can read out street names just like the standalone device. Otherwise there is nothing special about this release.

Given that you can buy an entire Tom Tom One for less than they're asking for just an iPhone app - forget it.
The whole point of navigation on an iPhone is that one pays a little more not to have to carry another device. If one only has one car and never rents, then another device may be no big deal.

Well yes, isn't Navigon the same or better, and cheaper?

I love how every GPS app release thread people complain about price. Do you guys realize how expensive licensing the map data is? That's were the cost is coming from.

This is only good if you are in a AT&T network area, right? If you are out of range, then it is of no use, but buying a real Tom Tom that you mount to dashboard works using satellite. If this is so, why would I spend this much money for something that stops working when I go on a road trip on the coast or in the mountains?
Just my 2¢
Perhaps. However, my understanding is that TomTom comes with its own maps, as on a Treo. It is only AT&T Navigator that requires GPRS for maps. I am trying AT&T now; only costs $10/ month to do so. Here in the NE US it works very well but I would not want to rely upon it in San Francisco where AT&T Data is notorious.

Wow, great, looking at the description it's exactly the same features as my Co-Pilot which IMO has better looking graphics. So glad I didn't wait now. Dread to think what the UK price will be.

I see where you guys are coming from but I think the whole point for everyone, including myself, is to have an all-in-one device. I for one dont want to carry a GPS, iPod and a phone around. :)

Yeah, but at the same time while your iPhone is mounted on the windscreen as a glorified TomTom, you can't do anything else with it.

Others have said they don't want to carry around multiple devices, but I don't know anyone who carries their TomTom around with them.

I HATE the UI! I would have preferred a little car instead of the arrow, and it just looks clustered or something. All this time, and they couldn't get a nice looking UI.

And the price is too much for the program, plus the car mount, etc.

I have Navigon now, but I think Tom Tom is going to live off its name in order to get people to buy their product, even if Navigon is better.

I already have a TomTom LIVE 740 in my car. I'm not interested in an in-car solution.

What I am interested in, is which iPhone turn-by-turn app offers the best functionality for pedestrian use. I often use GPS + Maps when trying to find my way round a strange city, but it can be an expensive business when roaming abroad. All the TomTom peripheral kit is of no concern to me; I'll never use it in-car. But I would be attracted to a TomTom to use on foot, familiar as I am with the TomTom UI.

Anyone else thinking the same way? Which app do people recommend for pedestrians?
I use iMap for pedestrian navigation. Do not need TBT if I can look at it without killing someone and where I am not going so fast as to miss a turn.

so you're navigating your way down the road, then you get a call...
then you get a text...
then you want to use urbanspoon...

just get a separate nav or use this on your ipod touch. i know you want a single device - the maps app works fine enough.

Does not specify text-to-speech. Even AT&T Nagivator has that. Does not specify smart lanes either; important feature here in the NE US where many interchanges are complicated and poorly marked. High-end integrated TomTom units may still have that advantage.

Anyone know if this will work on the new iPod touches? I'm planning to get one to use as a pim when they come out since I can't have an iPhone. M Gps needs aren't too stringent

This thread is over four hours old. There is only a two hour time difference between NZ and OZ. Looking bad for an OZ announcement. Anyone awake in OZ?
