Missing the point.

TomTom has sold their app from their own website for years. They don't need App Store servers or payment services. They have their own already.

Now they have to add an extra 30% for Apple, which means the user potentially pays a lot more for no good reason.

The whole security and vetting BS should never have applied to large, established companies anyway. TomTom and others should be able to host apps on their own.

I think you are partially right : yes, TomTom has everything needed to sell the app themselves, but they also have a cost for that. I think they would sell the app the same price if it was sold on their website.

Does anyone know if this will work without an internet connection? For example when your on vacation and don't want to be roaming?

This is the question of questions for me. I don't want to be charged AT&T's outlandish (for me anyway) pricing for being on the internet in a non-wifi situation when in Europe and in need of finding my way around.

When using Tom Tom, would I still be charged with AT&T's international internet roaming charges or are they bypassed? If bypassed, then Tom Tom for me would be a hugh bargain!

Thank you in advance for any clarification on this point!

Epic pricing fail. I was waiting for the TomTom app seeing as I don't have a dedicated SatNav, but I do have an in-car iPhone dock/charger. £59.99???? No way, I just picked up CoPilot Live 8 for £26 instead...and whadayaknow...it works perfectly well. :)

Your question has been answered already a zillion times on each page of this thread.

thats funny, my little town is on the map in the tomtom map screenshot. you would think marlboro is some kind of a city....

This is a long anticipated app in a field already well populated with competitors. With TT in the field, people can finally choose. Their competitors will see a huge bump in sales as people abandon their seats on the fence.

Yeah in the iPhone market. But not really much of a big deal else where.

App / Dock discount?

I am in a bit of a predicament with the release of this new application. Like many other Macrumors users I have been anticipating the release of the tomtom app for iphone. I seem to have personally justified the 99.99 price point of this app, but I am wondering whether or not I should wait to buy this until the dock is released just in case tomtom offers a discount when you buy both. Anyone else feel this way?

I think today's launch of the TomTom app for the iPhone will become a popular case study for college students and academics that does not bode well for TomTom. TomTom did a GREAT job of:
  • squandering pent-up demand.
  • squandering the halo effect of presenting at the Apple's Developer's Conference.
  • being "late to the dance."
  • failing to communicate with a consumer base that was dying for communication.
  • nonsensical pricing.

Just my dos centavos.

I agree completely. I even signed up to get iphone app updates from tom-tom. and nothing.

On page 4 and still no definitive answer - maybe the "zillion" times will start on page 5 lol. Or, rather than being sarcastic, you could have just answered.

To answer your question, you don't need a connection as tom tom had to provide their own maps for the app. So no internet connection required!

Then they smash the window and open the glove compartment.

Exactly. These criminals looks for the mark of your suction cup on the windshield, so even if you remove the cradle you're not safe!

And the best part is that the insurance company won't cover the damage, because you're not supposed to leave it in the car!

Thanks. If Tom Tom can work with the iPhone on "airplane" mode then the price is fair for those of us that travel outside of the AT&T network - Europe for example - and don't want to pay for AT&T's roaming costs for using google maps. Last I checked, AT&T charged $59.99 for 50 mb's of data when roaming! And after that was used up, then it got "expensive"!

To sum things up for the newcomers,

"A day late and a dollar short" is how i'd describe this release.

Despite Tomtom being my favorite PND company I have to say, I'm kinda disappointed by this release.

So true... But surprisingly, on the french AppStore it is already number 2 (France only version) and number 3 (Europe version) of the best selling navigation applications !

Agree 1000%.

And it's lack of features for the price...what the heck are they thinking. Their name isn't "that" good that they can just rely on releasing a product and having folks just buy it.

Yeah, me too!
I would be willing to pay the higher price of this App if it spoke the name of the street to turn on but with no text to speech furgetabouit!
All the hype just for a let down. :(

Dock Release

I feel EXACTLY the same way. I know I will buy it. And I would LOVE to test it out on my cross-country road trip that I'm going on tomorrow. I've already accepted the price and no matter how much we complain and complain, they will not lower the price... at least not for a while. The question now is, will I get some sort of discount if I wait for the tomtom dock and get both as a bundle.

When someone finally tests this on an iphone 3G and makes a review, can you include how fast it registers your speed is. On my tomtom one, when my speed changes, it's about a 5 second delay until it gets my correct speed (if i drastically change it like 20 mph to 0) I am just still a little skeptical on how fast it will register due to the 3G processing speed

Agreed. And just imagine, we are going to be trying to use this on a network that apperently can't even handle MMS yet.

Kind-o-pricey!

$99.- for the software, and then buy the hardware for another big chunk???

I rather buy a whole separate unit for that...

I've been waiting for this app to be in the range of $30, and then willing to pay some $50 to $70 for the hardware... but this is way too much.

Bye-Bye TomTom! ;)

In case you missed this:

In yesterday's Sunday Los Angeles Times (page A23), Discount Computer Warehouse in Northridge, CA 818-576-9111 advertised:

TomTom GPS for **$49** !
