Tomtom has a heavy online user base, and they usually stagger announcements of new updates. My guess is that they want to stagger the rush to download, their servers don't scale well. Since this is downloading off of apple servers it may be less of an issue, but Tomtom may just be in this habit.

- First the app/update goes live silently
- Then a day later they issue a press release
- Then a few days later email announcements go out

So those who registered for email announcements will probably get info in 1-2 days.

The press release has gone out. It includes a high-level feature list, and the an announcements that the Touch and non-3G iPhones will get the app soon.

My assumption is that the Touch app will be released when the carkit goes on sale, and only work when plugged into the car kit, since the car kit has its own backup GPS receiver.

Also, they posted an easy download link.

TMC is not a service. With the LIVE services (that the text refers to) TomTom means the traffic updates over a GPRS phone connection trough bluetooth to the navigation product.

TMC can be received by a special antenna that can be bought separately and plugged in to most TomTom products. It´s the same technology that your built-in car-navigation uses to show traffic info. It doesn´t need a subscription or a phone connection.

I was therefore wondering whether the cradle has such an antenna built in. Would be nice, but I fear it doesn´t have one.

TomTom makes no mention of this. If they had included an antenna for TMC, they would have mentioned it, wouldn't they ?

Move!

Seriously why is this front page news, its just another iPhone application, this should be in the iPhone section.:p Or maybe wasteland...;)
Seriously though it is just another application for iPhone, there was another navigation application story on the iPhone page why not this one too.

Map Updates?

I haven't seen this question asked so far (though I've skimmed through the many pages so far, apologies if I've missed it):

With a standalone TomTom, you're more or less stuck with the map that is provided with the unit, and you can pay for an updated map if you want to. How does this work with the TomTom iPhone app - will we get free map updates through normal updates to the app, or how will they handle map updates?

TomTom UI

When I think about the TT UI, I do not really think much about the map displahy. What I think about is the ease of setting up a trip. That is where I have my learning time invested. That is what I have been waiting for and I am not disappointed.

I may just buy the dock, and not the Map software. $99, no way, google goes just fine for free.

So, if we bought just the dock and not the actual TT software will we still be able to use all the other dock features such as bluetooth, ipod etc?

My guess is Map updates will be offered via in-app purchase.

I know it's been said over and over but it can't be said enough:

Ridiculous pricing

I'm willing to pay money for a good app and I don't think every app should be .99 cents but I think CoPilot Live has the right idea.

You can be sure that an application needs specific coding to access the technology in the dock. Therefore it would be useless without the app. Just as Navigon et al. most likely will not be able to access the functions of the dock.

TomTom will surely have taken measures to prevent the dock from being used with anything else than their app.

TomTom and external POI??

OK... but... can you add your own POI database (on jailbroken device)?
Downloded for instance from poiplaza.com?
They have two formats for tomtom devices: ov2 and asc.
What format of POI database does iphone's tomtom support?

If you have the address attached to a contact already you will be fine.
Indeed. If it is a POI, I copy it to contacts, if it is a new address, I usually set it up as a contact and then reference it from contacts.

The ability to use a contact as a destination is very powerful. One of the things that I do not like about AT&T Navigator is that I cannot do that.

This is a long anticipated app in a field already well populated with competitors. With TT in the field, people can finally choose. Their competitors will see a huge bump in sales as people abandon their seats on the fence.

That's the whole point. Turn-by-turn GPS apps MUST provide their own map tiles. If you have a 3G or 3GS it will work anywhere, regardless of whether you have mobile connectivity available or not.

A$99.99 (which is what it probably will be) is WAAAYY cheaper than a stand-alone unit.

Review: Amazon

Um..that's one example of the many. GPS systems like all other technology is getting cheaper. This is WAY over priced.

For 30% of the retail price, Apple : (App Store ... etc)

Missing the point.

TomTom has sold their app from their own website for years. They don't need App Store servers or payment services. They have their own already.

Now they have to add an extra 30% for Apple, which means the user potentially pays a lot more for no good reason.

The whole security and vetting BS should never have applied to large, established companies anyway. TomTom and others should be able to host apps on their own.

For any Australians

Woolworths/Safeway has 20% OFF iTunes Gift Cards this week only.

Making a TomTom App purchase only AU$80

(or 20% off any other apps or music you wish to purchase).

Case Study

I think today's launch of the TomTom app for the iPhone will become a popular case study for college students and academics that does not bode well for TomTom. TomTom did a GREAT job of:
  • squandering pent-up demand.
  • squandering the halo effect of presenting at the Apple's Developer's Conference.
  • being "late to the dance."
  • failing to communicate with a consumer base that was dying for communication.
  • nonsensical pricing.

Just my dos centavos.

You spend 10 seconds putting it in the glove compartment and then you lock your car. It's pretty safe.
Then they smash the window and open the glove compartment.
Heck, they did that to mine and the SatNav wasn't even in there

I also find it funny that people thought this was goinf to be about $29. I don't want to say I told you so, but...

;)
