I have to disagree. I have both with traffic and found TomTom's routing to be pretty bad, reliably sending me right into the very heaviest of traffic while Navigon's traffic routing urges me around traffic issues much more often. Navigon's routes in general are also much better. TomTom routinely found oddball routes that not only didn't save time, they were usually aggravating and slower than the ones they were attempting to route me around. I've given up on TomTom - Navigon is clearly superior in my usage. In fact, I'm dumping my dash-mounted Magellan with traffic add-on because the Navigon app is better!

I guess literally YMMV! It sounds like TomTom has poor traffic IQ data for your area. I wonder if disabling IQ routing would help (not that you should have to). This is why expensive apps like these need some type of trial period.

Navigon gives your destination on left or right via voice or Turn-by-Turn List.

It does not give "well advance" voice destination on left or right. An improvement is in progress...

From Turn-by-Turn List, usually on last item (destination) is on left or right.

Thanks for the tip! I just checked the turn-by-turn directions and I see it there. Hopefully, as you're mentioning, this feature is improved so that we don't have to look it up in the turn-by-turn directions list.

I ended up going with Navigon while it was on sale, I also got the traffic and 3D add-ons because I figured they were worth it while on sale.

I freakin love this app! I have never had a dedicated GPS, and I have been getting by on the Maps app on my iphone for years. This was SO worth the $40, it works much better for my use than a dedicated device would. I listen to music rather loud in my car, and therefore it would be difficult to hear the directions, but I can just plug iphone into my Alpine head unit and it seamlessly quiets down the music gives me the direction I need, and the music comes back up. Works great and I love it! I can still control the music part through my HU, this is nice because this is my habit and it would be annoying to have to change when using the Navi, and I control the nav part through the phone.

Works just like I hoped that it would!! Definitely recommended!

Just to be sure as i just purchased Navigon for my iphone, The traffic is a 1 time fee for life or is it a yearly purchase?

Just checked, it is a 1 time fee.

So what about the 'other' option? Are these 2 hands down the best choices, or are there others to be considered?

I am shopping for my first GPS for my first iPhone (4). The reviews in the app store vary so wildly though that it makes shopping tough.

Navigon and TomTom are the best two right now, but there are other decent options that are much cheaper. I've heard good things about Co-Pilot, iGo and MotionX.

MotionX is a good example of the wildly varying reviews I mentioned. I have never seen so many reviews alternating between 5 stars or one 1 star. People seem to love it or hate it. Looking at the MotionX site though, it sure LOOKS like a really nice app and has a great feature set listed.

If you only need something to use in a pinch and don't want to spend a lot on it, MotionX is a great app. Those one star ratings really aren't fair considering the cost of the app. People need to have reasonable expectations for bargain priced software. For less then half the price, I would say MotionX is worth it; but if you want something that compares to a dedicated GPS device, stick with Navigon or TomTom. They cost more, but you are getting a better experience.

I've used Waze, motion x drive, mapquest, skobbler and now Navigon and i can say, Navigon is a huge jump and it should be considering the price. Out of all the cheaper ones, motion x is sweet. i just wish they had a 1 time fee for voice. Waze is cool to with its social networking. If i were going the cheaper route than without a doubt Motion X drive. some people like the option of choosing to pay for voice. It's nice to have a choice. But for me, Navigon is really amazing and compares to my stand alone Garmin easily. If price is a concern I would say Motion x is the only one that compares to the big boys, Navigon, TomTom, and Maggelan. Just my opinion of course...

Thanks for the MotionX info. I decided to give it a shot. I wouldn't be using a GPS on a daily basis or anything. Maybe once or twice a month for weekend trips. It seems like it may be good enough for my needs. I am going to try it out this weekend.

There are really only 2 choices: Navigon or MotionX GPS Drive.

I still use an old 3G so I mainly use MotionX -- Navigon runs like crap on the 3G performance-wise, while MotionX is pretty snappy. The down side is that if a network connection isn't available (or drops during your drive) MotionX has trouble with that, sometimes even crashing.

Routing-wise they are pretty comparable. I've used both on extensively long journeys across the USA and never had any trouble with either one.

Navigon is rather expensive but MotionX charges as well. $2.99 every 30 days (you can buy a 30-day block only when you really need navigation, for example) or $24.99 for the entire year. At this rate, you could buy MotionX for 3 full years for the cost of Navigon.

hey,
does tom tom or navigon need my 3g data network to use these GPS apps ????

I'm not one to usually say this - but use the search feature. This has been brought up hundreds of times.

It only uses 3G if you are searching POIs in Google, getting weather information in Navigon, or using traffic. If you turn data off, the positioning may be slower/less accurate, but it will still work - all of the data is stored on the phone, so nothing needs to be downloaded. I believe a small amount of data is used when calculating position using cell tower triangulation, but someone can correct me if I am wrong.

yep. it downloads it and gets data from it i believe

Nope! Doesn't need data. All the maps are installed with the program. I've used it without any 3G (or any internet connection at all for that matter), while travelling.

When I do searches on some things it seems to use data though. Not 100% sure as I was paying attention to driving and only searching at stops.

Navigon clobbers CoPilot

Did any of your compare to CoPilot? That is the one I am using, but open to improvements!

I tried CoPilot first and found it to be a complete waste of money. I'd say about 30-40% of the addresses I tried to find weren't in its database, all of which have been in existence for 10+ years in a major metro area (Toronto). Contacts integration is pathetic, almost to the point of not being usable.

I've now been using Navigon for about 2 months and like it very much. It is not perfect and has on a couple of occasions located me on the wrong road (parallel to the one I was actually on), but the UI is nice and integration with iPod control and contacts is far superior to CoPilot.

It's easily worth the price difference.

I agree with this... MotionX GPS Drive is a decent alternative to Navigon if you don't need TTS and don't care about using up data while you drive. Also, automatic re-routing is available for a monthly fee, but is cost effective if you only buy it now and then (i.e. $2.99/month and doesn't auto-renew last I checked).

I use Navigon on a daily basis now, but when I was using MotionX GPS Drive I liked it a lot.

Yellow Pages (free) the no 1 directory app has now integrated Navigon.

If you have Navigon, download Yellow Pages (Avantar) and will auto integrate.

Runs seamless, the perfect match.

This is for the AirYell app by Avantar LLC, not the Yellow Pages app.

you're welcome! Navigon gives your VOICE destination on left or right after you arrive at your destination (too late!)....that's what I meant it does not give "well advance" VOICE destination on left or right, for example "in 300 feet, your destination is on the left."

Um, the Yellow Pages app is indeed integrated with Navigon. Used it to look up a number of locations and they then linked directly into Navigon. I don't have this "AirYell" app you're mentioning at all.

In a listing, click on the blue button with a car. If you have Navigon installed, a bar will pop up asking if you wish to use it.

I see the problem now... I live in Canada, so it seems like the "Yellow Pages" app developed by Avantar is not available in the Canadian store. The only similar app from Avantar I have access to is the AirYell one I mentioned before. The problem with that app is it thinks I'm located in Youngstown, NY, about 100 km from my current position.

The Canadian YellowPages app is created by another developer, who unfortunately has not implemented the integration feature with Navigon.

Yes, but you only have one voice to choose from. Not a big deal, as the voice is clear and does a decent job with most street names.

Don't know if the Tom Tom app gives you more options for voices.

For street names you have 2 options in TomTom, a male and a female. I find the Male voice to be much more clear.
