Macrumors? I think not!

I've buried this in a thread on another forum here, but I think my sentiment deserves a little more attention than it is likely to get there (and no, the Site Feedback forum doesn't seem to be the right place, seeing that it's pretty much dead). So here it goes!

With only two out of the ten stories on the first page of Macrumors being related to the Mac, I think it is finally time the folks who own and run this site to spin off a new site dedicated to Apple gadgets and leave this one to the Mac. Otherwise just replace the word Mac in Macrumors with App(le). Yeah, App(le)rumors sounds a lot more, ahem, ap(p)ropos!

The sign over the front door still says Macrumors.

As r.j.s. said, changing it now would be fruitless and a step backwards. MacRumors is a brand. It's not like Apple Computer going to Apple Inc.

The best thought on it, might be this bit of history:
The site was named MacRumors when Apple had only one of its current three product lines. The site has always covered Apple's full product line and the name in no way limits that scope.

I suggest that those who have interest in only a subset of stories use the RSS feed to pick and choose what they want to read.

Here are some other thoughts on it:
- News items are posted to the front page that are considered interesting or significant.
- We don't make up rumors or news when there isn't any on a particular topic.
- If we didn't cover iPhone news, there would be fewer news stories overall, but no more Mac stories. There isn't a collection of relevant Mac rumors/news that we skip in order to make room for iPhone news.

arn

Nope. I'd like to know about all things Apple related and this site does just that. I'm not forced to read everything on the main page. Seeds don't particularly interest me but I deal. Big whoop, Apple is patching the OS... ohhh ahhh.

a.) If you want to hear anymore about 10.5.3 then it will just be made up as all that is known is posted. News fluctuates at the moment with the expected release of the next generation iPhone then obviously there will be lots of stories about it.

b.) In regards to the forums, you can ignore posts from Forum Spy and also read Don't want to see a certain forum in "New Posts"? Here's how..

iPod Touch - Overpriced toy for ****s asking to be mugged that have no friends that like to call them. :p

Back when the site was made there really wasn't much else than the Mac to report on. Apple has changed, the site has changed, it's just the domain has stayed the same.

Also if it's macrumors maybe we shouldn't post when things actually are released since those would be better suited to macfacts.

Again, it's a branding issue. MacRumors is a huge site, and can't just change its name.

EDIT: According to Alexa, MR is ranked #1,361 on the Internet and #608 in the US for web traffic. Hard to change a name when you are that popular.

Good god man, why couldn't you have just leave this dead and buried.

Actually you should switch to applerumors.com then

Looks like macrumors also owns that URL, hum branding...

While I suppose I understand your issue, no one is forcing you to continue to frequent the site... Arn and co. have done exactly what they need to do, and that is evolve with the company they are centered around. This site started before the first iPod was in stores, if I have my dates correct, so how could anyone have known almost ten years ago that the major money maker for the company would turn out to be another Apple product other than the mac? If the decision had been made to stick with the literal meaning of the website's name (macs only) the site would have suffered overall.

I would understand if there was some sort of failure on the part of the site to report on mac news, but there simply isn't. This site remains on the forefront of reporting for macs, all while addressing the other products of Apple as a whole. I, for one, am thankful that there exists such a high quality source of Apple related news.

Also, your complaint completely ignores the fact that Apple and it's gadgets are inextricably tied with the mac. The beauty of Apple products is their seamless integration with each other. It wouldn't make any sense to have an iPod site that completely ignored the mac, or vice versa. While each product can be used completely independent of each other, there is and always will be so much crossover that untying the two would be an impossible task.

Branding issue? Seeing you guys are so skilled at redirecting traffic, why not try a gradual transition, during which people browsing for macrumors.com would get to a page that presents them with the choice of going to the true (ha!) Macrumors and the phone(y) one. Over time, people would just bookmark one or the other, depending on their interests, and you could eventually do away with the "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood" page.

Ok, maybe I'm being overly blunt, but why would/should anyone work to redirect traffic to a new site from an incredibly well established one when it would be so much easier for people who care (i.e. you) to just leave?

As Abbie explained, Apple's products are all intertwined. If you want a site that is only Mac news and discussion - start it.

We can help you out with your problems with this site, a simple IP ban and you'd never have to worry about this site again.

OK, maybe I'm being overly idealistic, but I would hope arn @ company would do this because they care about the frequenters of their site(s) as much as they do about the bottom line?

But whatever. I'll just skip the front page from now on and go straight to the forums that interest me here, whilst ignoring all the adverts (just as I have ignored them since my first day here).

My post above has responses from the moderating crew and arn regarding the non-Macness. What at all does it matter to the "frequenters of this site" that it says Mac instead of Apple?

I'm interested in Apple news, not just Mac news, and this site delivers.

Yeah, AppleRumors sounds better, but it's been MacRumors for almost a decade now, so we'll have to live with it, don'tcha think?

I also think the logo looks heinous (clever yes, but heinous) but it's also been there for almost a decade, so it's here to stay. Ain't stopping me from visiting the site multiple times a day, though.

You think you can do better? Make a site yourself and see if others agree, eh?

It was because of buying an iPhone in June of 2007 that I found this site. I signed up here on another name that I couldn't remember. I was excited to own something made by Apple. A week after owning the iPhone, I bought my very first Mac, a 15" MBP. During that week before.

What mattered to me was that this site had a forum set aside for the iPhone. If it wasn't for the iPhone, I would never have bought a MBP. The iPhone impressed me so much that I had to have a Mac because I heard that there was a photo app that worked so perfectly with the iPhone. It wasn't as easy to import photos on my HP laptop and when I got the Mac, it seemed like everything between the iPhone and Mac were designed to work together perfectly.

The iPhone will always belong here on this forum and just like me, it makes others buy their very first Mac as well. I've heard of many others who have bought a Mac because of the iPhone.
