Pretty scary, but what always surprises me is someone who joins and starts posting at an incredible rate. Many of the new top 50 joined recently, and I would not be surprised to see someone new make an appearance in that list next time you run it.

Out of curiosity who are the top 50 oldest active posters on MR? It seems like some of the older members are disappearing.

I get all information from the same public pages you can look at. I've been doing these stats since before I was a moderator and then an administrator, so I didn't have access to any server data or private information, and I still don't use any.
Ouch. Surely there's a better way to get the data. I want real-time updated predictions! :p

Oh, and I don't believe for a second anyone who feigns shock or disappointment over being on any of these lists... ;) :D

Dang... Only #13.. and beaten by dmw007 AGAIN??

I think Mr. Bond and I are need to have a little discussion...

I love the stats, Q! It's so mathy and nice. :)

and FWIW, I like Excel more than word. :D

Define your terms and perhaps I can figure it out. For example, would "oldest" mean they were members for a given number of years?

Something almost as good: Print out all my previous charts, staple them together, and riffle through the stack to make a flip-book animation.

Perhaps all the high posters know they are high posters, but I believe it when people are disappointed not to make the lists. Being a high poster isn't the most admirable trait one could aspire to, but being on lists like these does bestow a slight bit of e-status.

Why not just use your pet?

Or are you even more fearsome than El Chupacabra...?

You can check for yourself fairly easily...go to Members List, then Search Members --> Advanced Search. Then you can limit it by something like last post date (define "active" however you want) and then use the drop-down menus to sort by join date and ascending, and you've got it!

Yes - that I believe as well. It was the ones who were on the list I was talking about.

And to be clear - there's no shame being on this list, and those of us that are on it shouldn't feel like we don't have "lives" just because we're here. In some sense, this part of my life is important - the interaction, the learning, etc. I'm not ashamed to be on the list, although some of you might wish I weren't. :p

Thanks again for putting these stats out, Doctor Q!

Just click "Members List," and then click on the "Posts" header - it will then sort it by posts.

But if you want to do what he's actually looking for, you have to do as I described in order to sort by join date and limit it to people who have posted in the past month.

I have mixed feelings about my own positions on the lists. I was pleased that I made it onto my own list in my first extrapolation thread in 2003, when I predicted I'd just reach #50 within a year. In contrast, I was "slightly horrified" to find myself reaching the Top 5 this year.

Now I'm rather glad I'm not going to stay quite so high on the list. I don't want too much of a good thing.™ I'll probably feel a little bit disappointed each time I get passed by someone (at current rates, ~Shard~, jsw, iGary, mkrishnan, and yellow will move up past me), but in the long run that's fine.

Bad analogy: If I'm in a 3.14159K race sponsored by some group or cause, I might feel a twinge when somebody behind me catches and passes me, but it's the exercise or good cause ("spim" awareness) or charity (raising money for Chronic Halitosis research) or protest march ("Stop Plate Tectonics!") that matters, not my position in the race. Unless, of course, there's prize money involved!

Isn't the good cause usually awareness of mathematical constants in the case such races?

Like the Euler-Mascheroni constant? Naw, everyone already knows that stuff. No need for an awareness campaign.

The scary thing is, thanks to the multitude of Calculus classes I took in Engineering, I can understand that.

I'm not feeling too stressed about my calculus placement exam anymore :)

I mean, it looks like a maths thing but there are funny squiggles in it and letters instead of numbers... :p
Use this instead: 0.577215665. Fewer squiggles, same basic value. :)

No no no, double integrals and partial derrivatives are much more fun to deal with than plain-old boring numbers...

I think I prefer the squiggles. They're sweet.

Me too, but perhaps I'm biased...
