Very nice post.

Actually, MR is my only online foray into some version of social media. Unlike what may appear to be much of the world, I am not on FB, and don't really 'get' it.

To be candid, I like my privacy, and my personal space, and value both. However, I also like the fact that I can participate in a congenial online community (MR) - which is the sort of place where most people seem to find their own level or find likeminded friends in whatever threads and fora interest them. Above all, and this did surprise me, I find that enjoy the anonymity of the place; it is a strangely soothing place, where I drop in to say hello to a bunch of online friends whose real names I do not know, for the most part. Strange, but wonderful. It is not what I would have ever expected to find myself doing as recently as a decade ago…..

I agree with you. I also do not have a Facebook. I do have Twitter, but that's pretty limited and I use it more to follow interesting things than to chat with others. But as for social media, MacRumors is where it's at for me.

Actually, I am on LinkedIn, but use it solely for professional purposes, and then only briefly; in fact, I use it to keep in touch with fellow professionals in areas of mutual interest.

However, for a more persona flavour, I come to MR, and it is the only forum of its kind I frequent.

Ah yes, I forgot about LinkedIn. I have that too, but don't really consider it social media as, like you, I use it strictly for professional things.

Exactly. I use it to keep in touch with individuals with whom I have worked and with whom I share professional interests. A few of my friends are on it, too. However, I use it strictly for professional matters, and rarely post on anything, even political discussions.

Now, MR, on the other hand, is different. And some corners of it (our wonderful espresso thread comes to mind, in particular) are positively welcoming in their warm atmosphere and comfortable ambience.

No Facebook or Twitter here either.

Not sure why the world would care about my status that much!

I don't even do LinkedIn as I find most of the endorsements etc are worth about as much as printing off your own qualifications.

My only other online presence is Flickr and that's really just to enable me to post full size pictures in the POTD thread on here.

Macrumors just gets the balance right between being social and my anominity.

Same with me. I have no followers on my Twitter account and use it basically to follow sports news.

Yes, I am in much the same position; while I do have a Twitter account, for now, I simply use it to follow politics in the country where I am based.

LinkedIn is used solely for professional purposes - and, in that context, endorsements can indeed be of some use - while Facebook is something I neither understand nor have the slightest interest in, and, not only do I not have a FB account, I have never had one, and I simply don't 'get' it.

Having no Facebook account has greatly enhanced my life.

I don't doubt that for one minute, as I feel exactly the same.

Still in the top 25 without lifting a finger! As ever a mixture of shame and a little smugness.

As for the reasons many of the top posters have absconded, I think simply put: things change. Abstract, SkyBell (Cassie?) and Scepticalscribe wrote some pretty accurate details which I tend to agree with but the biggest reason for me - when I was posting prolifically it was before the likes of Twitter and Facebook. Eventually the site got bigger and less personal; rules evolved and started cramping my style; some of the interactions felt increasingly annoying; well that’s when I found more enjoyment in other/newer mediums of internet socialising. Separate or not to that I think I also became more interested in reading instead of doing the talking. I read A LOT. Novels, articles, and everything I ever wanted to learn about. It’s liberating. Lately there’s been a lot of catching up on TV and movies that I couldn’t bother with on slower internet. Now there is 100 meg and Netflix, etc. Nothing very dramatic drove me away, just a change in focus.

At the risk of cheesing it up, MR will always be special to me because of the people I’ve met and haven’t yet met but regularly talk to from here. Many people I don’t currently talk to still cross my mind from time to time. Some brilliant people have found their way here. I would know! :p

And thanks to Q for the stats! These threads always intrigue me back for a peek.

Good too hear from you. it's been a long time. The stats are nice. iBlue PM me your Twitter handle please.

Thanks for the excellent compilation Doc... as usual.

Looks like I need to spam post more, so I will actually to move a spot based on your extrapolations. :p

What about top 50 poster per individual year? (Not an accumulation of all years). I might make the top 50 there. :p
Since I have data only for users with the overall top post counts, I could create an ordered subset based on the last year's posts, but I would miss top posters who don't yet have a high enough post count to show up on my radar. All those up-and-coming motormouths would be left out.

You'd have to post it to represent 1 years of activity, say on Jan 1 for the previous year or whatever benchmark desired, say June 1 for previous year back to to the previous June 1. :)

How does one check their position on this forum? On other forums I'm part of there's a place that shows the top poster and a list of everyone else and their rank based on posts.

I had a quick look and you are currently joint 2583 on the list.

No, I doubt that they do.

Rather, I would imagine that it is more a matter of changes in their lives: For example, obtaining or being appointed to a new job may compel a change; maybe a change in personal circumstances, or new relationships, perhaps the simple fact of having children - any or all of these reasons can offer an explanation for members deciding to become inactive, or, a lot less active.

In essence, I think it may boil down to the fact that people (members) either become too busy, or, other activities and relationships fill the space that membership of this online community used to provide.

well i became inactive because i went back to windows but alas i am back and my macs are ready now.
