Remember the iPod and iPhone when they were first introduced years ago? Along with all the rejection that ensued before people actually tried them?

So much for people being able to see something and understand it's not practical...

What was your mistake rate the very first time you used a mouse or keyboard? Were you able to quickly improve over time?

My mistake rate when using a NEW keyboard is subject to near zero-tolerance.
If it also doesn't work comfortably (like Apple's new butterfly keyboard) - I reject it.
Blind typing has a lot to do with referencing from one key to another, while keeping attention at the screen.
Dividing focus between keyboard - screen - TouchBar is a lot more compelling than keyboard - Touchscreen, however.
That's an elementary UI misconception from Apple's part.

Not what I asked (regarding your post #225)...

The touch bar is a new user interface.

What was your mistake rate when you first used a keyboard (presumably years ago) for the very first time. And did that rate improve over time?

With a 3rd interface next to the screen/keyboard, each interface will get less focus and probably deteriorate productivity, after initial improvement (on keyboard or trackpad, for your part...)
And a TouchBar that changes from the active window context instead of the cursor placement will contribute to more errors, extra clicks and undo's.

Here in the UK, Still at Processing Items.. Anyone in the UK got a dispatch yet?

My uk order is the same. I ordered at 27 minutes passed so hoped to be in the first batch.

They did charge my credit card Saturday for it though.

I have been trying to explain this to my friends. If one is used to typing blind then the touch bar is just a gimmick. Normally pros would learn the keyboard shortcuts and be really fast. Touchbar is a big distraction. I wish they had the 15 inch in the non touch bar version. Lower cost and they could have added more battery. I think Apple needs new people to provide a refresh of perspectives. The same old people will be obsessed with thinness over functionality.

Agree. You'd expect TouchBar as a function key row replacement to adhere to keyboard conventions (allowing for blind typing)
But its context changes continuously (from the active window context instead of the cursor placement, grrr..) so it requires to be in sight when used.
Essentially, a second (touch)screen has been born. But hell, then why not make the REAL screen a TouchScreen.
...or move the TouchBar next to the trackpad

So that is awesome... why they hell does it have a proprietary power connector. Ok it's a pretty standard Jack... but can't it take power from the Thunderbolt. or use a USB C for power?

It supplies power (including charging power for an iPhone or iPad on certain ports) to USB 3 devices, buss power to a FW 800 device AND supposedly to the MBP itself, so you can keep your Apple power supply in your travel kit.

You don't think humans have the capacity to see something and understand that it's not practical?

I've used an iPad to type, and guess what? it sucks.

In the same fashion as an iPad, you'll have to take your eyes away from the screen to look down at the keyboard to see what key you're touching. Nothing will ever beat tactile keys in the realm of typing with your hands.

Watch how painfully delicate the tech blogger from The Verge is while typing, and keep track of how many times he has to hit the touch bar multiple times because he failed hitting the button correctly.

I refuse to pay $600 more for a down grade in productivity. Just because Tim Cook and the rest of his out of touch senior citizen team thinks it's cool, doesn't make it better.

So please, enough with the touch bar already.
Exactly, I've used one and you haven't. So, of course, you know so much better than I. How dare I even question your authority and vast experience.

Ars Technica has posted their review of the 13" and 15" macbook pro laptops.

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2016/11/the-2016-13-and-15-inch-touch-bar-macbook-pros-reviewed/

An interesting titbit:

The AMD graphics cards appear to have been specifically chosen because only they allow for up to 2 5k displays to be used with the 15" laptops. Nvidia graphics cards can support one 1 5k external display. I am not sure if this was intentional (not everything is going to be pairing their MacBooks with 2 5k monitors), but that's that. They still can't support VR though, so I guess this isn't a market Apple is interested in competing in.
That's correct. Apple has no interest in VR. They have said that loud and clear. But they are clearly exploring augmented reality.

Are all the shipment notifications coming up now related to space gray models? Or has anyone actually ordered a silver one?

I have both a space gray and silver (13" 3.3Ghz/512GB/16GB) coming originally Nov 17-25; both have started shipping. The space gray is way ahead through, already departed shanghai, cn. The silver hasn't. Est. delivery is tomorrow for our space gray and silver for Friday. Hope that helps you.

My understanding is that these machines fall under the festive season returns period. So we have until mid January to return them.

Given I have not seen this machine etc, I have pre-ordered with the Assumption of evaluating and seeing it for the first time, something that could have been avoided if apple had units in store.

I assume there will be a considerable returns once people use the machines and decide on the price/value ration.

Im almost certain ill go for a 2015 machine just for the cost here.....but as you said, Apple gave me no choice to see this unit they expect me to pay $$$$$$$ for.

So I plan to give it a good test drive and post reviews / comparisons for other users here who are undecided .
perhaps then, there might be some GREAT deals to snap up on refurbished returned machines!

You don't have to use something to know you don't like it. Clearly you're a fan and I'm not. Just a difference in personal taste, no biggie.

Now, in regards to productivity, a touch bar is not and will never be more efficient than tactile keys.

I took the opportunity to visit my local Apple Store. Unfortunately they still didn't have the new MBPs with touch bar, but I did try the new keyboard on the non-touch bar 13" model. When I tried the MBP keyboard first and then the keyboard on the MB, I found it difficult to tell the difference. When I tried the MB and then the MBP, I could tell the difference in feel on the new MBP. It feels like there is more travel and it offers more tactile response. I would have to use it for a while to find out how well I could adapt to it, but I think it would be manageable.
Yes, it's slightly better than the MB but is pretty similar with its flaw: You can't tell when you've pressed a key because it just barely presses down, and when you press a key, it has a chance of not inputting. I tried typing on it and kept omitting or duplicating characters accidentally.

Happy for you! Seems like no shipments for European customers still... :-/

And... i'm still waiting for my silver one to actually depart. Still at the "Export Scan" phase. The first one only sat like that for part of a day. This one since Monday. Still says it'll deliver by Friday, if so, it better get going "Soon".
