Handbrake is pure beauty. So simple, and so easy to use. So perfect.
Here's a link for all those who haven't figured out exactly on your own what to do for ripping DVDs:
http://howto.diveintomark.org/ipod-dvd-ripping-guide/
Haha, if you don't know exactly what to do like my friend did who ripped it into the wrong size and put it into Quicktime Pro to change it and somehow it ended up taking a week. :rolleyes:
Also, I told him about the "private browsing" feature on Safari, after he had been complaining about the history being too hard to clear quickly or whatever, which is totally untrue, b/c it has a whole freaking menu thingie (yeah, yeah, I'm tired) for history, where you can clear it. :rolleyes:

so basically a "psp"lookin ipod w/o the buttins. pretty chiller. and the "disappearing" click wheel is pretty gnarly also. that would be really great. i expect a 80gb???

Ive heard that touch screens are really horrible if they aren't made right. Their was that one camera that had a touch screen and when you pressed a button something different would happen.

hard to imagine apple making the same mistake...

the only thing similar about the PSP and a rumoured video ipod is the screen...the PSP is lacking in its video capabilities because it relies on memory sticks. no hard drive, which would be the huge advantage of the ipod. yes, PSP can play proprietary discs, but i don't want that. i want it all on my hard drive...i don't want to carry around some extra discs.

enough with all the PSP comparisons already! :rolleyes:

For those saying it's too soon to come out with a new revision of the iPod;

Let me tell you a story. Way back when you still had to wind watches, the Swiss were the best watch makers in the world, and they owned most of the world's market for watches. One day, a Swiss, invented a watch that could run off of batteries, but the Swiss watch makers did not like it, they didn't feel people would buy it, and that it wasn't a "real" watch if you didn't wind it.
Long story short, the Japanese bought the idea, and now they own most of the watch market in the world.

This is called a Paradigm Shift. - When everything starts back at zero (as it did when watches started using batteries).

Apple has a lot of competition from good brands like Song, Samsung, etc. - and all of them have great ideas. Apple needs to stay one step ahead of them to make sure they don't end up like the Swiss. And when you do the math, there are many mp3 player brands (at least 10) - all of them coming out with new ideas all of the time - Apple needs to stay ahead of every single one of them.

- - So that's why Apple has to come out with a new revision so often.

The iPod sells because of the huge hit on the market and now MP3=iPod... There ARE better players regardless of how many biased people are on these boards. Such as Archos, the features are lightyears ahead of the iPod, but the elegant look of an iPod will catch anyones eye. I won't buy one of these if the rumors are true. I'm perfectly content with my MP4 player.

(EDIT) I have played with at least 6 5G iPods and they are noticably laggy. Yes the iPod is sleek, but if you want a true video device...the iPod isn't it.
you sound like one of the complainers on head-fi talking about how great the iriver is or how great the X5 sounds.... sure, there ARE players that sound better than the ipod. there ARE players that do more. there ARE players that do this or that. so what? if you don't want to buy one, don't.

so you're not going to buy a new video ipod because the 5G is laggy...hmmm...that makes no sense to me. you're not going to buy a product that you haven't even seen yet... :rolleyes:

If they come out I am going to sell my iPod G5. Though im not sure about the touch screen - most of the ones ive seen ether scratch or have big smears all across them :confused:

Maybe Apple will be different?!?!

how is this a paradigm shift? how is using batteries starting "back at zero?" and i don't think kuhn would agree with you that that's what paradigm shift means. using battery-driven watches is not the same thing as, say, thinking that the earth revolves around the sun and not vice-versa.

O Podfuture where art thou?

I have been reading the posts on this website for more than a year now, and there are certain people I always look forward to hearing from...

...podfuture? Are you there? Can you shed any light on this rumor?

Meanwhile as I continue to sift through the different points and counterpoints I keep returning to ThinkSecret's recent track record. Analysts can speculate all they want, but Apple knows what it's doing.

My question is, will the release of a new iPod with better video playback capability, if it sells as well as previous incarnations, bring more video content providers to iTMS? Or, in the alternative, will there have to be more available content for a new iPod with enhanced video to be viable?

I think the former is more likely, in fact, I would presume that if Apple does introduce such a device it already has concrete plans to expand the video offerings in iTMS--hopefully not limited to the United States.

"Some, like Joel Barker in his video "The Business of Paradigms," use paradigm and paradigm shift to explain how some people or companies fail and others succeed. The ones who succeed are those who can shift to a new paradigm; the ones who fail are those who remain hidebound and fixated on traditional ideas because they have proved successful in the past or because they can see no use for some new idea. The Swiss failed to patent or market the quartz watch, even though they invented it, because they couldn't shift paradigms. They couldn't shift paradigms because they couldn't see that there would be a market for another kind of watch besides the kind they'd been successfully making and selling for generations. The Japanese made all the money from the quartz watch because they didn't have an old paradigm that locked them into a way of thinking that precluded patenting and marketing quartz watches."

http://skepdic.com/paradigm.html

And once that first battery watch was made, everything was set back to zero. Before the battery watch, everyone wanted a Swiss watch, after the batter watch came out, everyone wanted one of those instead. Everything in the watch business that was "set in stone" before, didn't matter anymore.

I completely agree. I'm convinced that when this product is introduced (whether it's next month or next year, it will come) it will be announced along side more iTunes content. With Disney's recent aquisition of Pixar and the fact that they've already got a lot of content on iTunes, I think they will be the first studio to put their full-length features online. We may even see some Universal content since NBC has embraced iTunes as well.

of course.

GREAT! Yet another way for people to be distracted. I'm sick of people constantly playing with their cell phones. At least portable music players don't infringe on others' personal peace zone (P.P.Z.), as long as the idiot operating it doesn't have his/her volume loud enough for everyone within and without his/her P.P.Z. to experience their perception of music. I'd love to watch people watch me watch videos on the bus. PSP's, LCD'S, DVD's!

I tried to play brick on my ipod today and it sucked.

I'm calling complete ******** on this rumor. **** the analysts.

Honestly, the G5 iPod was released only 5 months ago. Killing it off now makes no sense.

Were this player to posses said video capabilities as well as music, what would be the point of selling 2 iPods that do basically the same ****?

I bet my left nut that were this thing to be released, within 1 week, Apple will get bitch slapped by another lawsuit, this time concerning easily smudged screens.

Hahaha. I love your use of language. I imagine dirty words where those asterisks are.

Who said they're killing off the current iPod. The two products have different strengths and they will appeal to different people.

That SNL sketch with Jobs releasing a new model of iPod every 3 minutes or so is becoming less and less of a joke all the time.

I never saw that sketch, is it available on the iTMS? :D

No, seriously. I really haven't as I don't watch SNL but I'd like to see it.

Evenutally the music iPod would get killed off. Cuz enough people will bitch about how the music playback is incredily limiting on the "vPod." Resulting in more lawsuits. D:

SNL Steve Jobs skit (if you get an error, try again in a few minutes, the owner limits the bandwidth)

edit: now it doesn't seem to be playing for some reason unknown to me.
You can go to the Homepage, find the SNL skit (on the right, 5th from the bottom) and right click it to download (once again, if it doesn't work, try again in a few minutes)

I have a question about the proposed design (tkermit's). Maybe this has been asked, apologies if so.

How do you use the buttons? (Previous song, next song, pause/play, menu)

If the scroll wheel only shows up when you touch the screen... how does it know where to show up? I mean does the top of the wheel show up where you touch, then you touch again to hit the button you want? (Which you can't do without looking, most likely.) So there's two touches, and your second touch has to be relative to the first one.

That sounds fine, maybe, for first time users, but once you've used the iPod for a while you want to use it without looking. Maybe they could have an advanced mode like this:

Is it possible they do away with displaying the scroll wheel completely? Then you just use gesturing to input, similar to mouse gestures?

Move thumb left->right = next
Move thumb right->left = prev
Move thumb down->up = menu
Move thumb up->down = play/pause
Move thumb in circle = scroll

Then there's still the problem of if you only want to scroll one song/artist/whatever down, it would be difficult to interpret the scrolling. (I guess the scrolling speeds up, though, so it might be possible.)

my dream portable device!! :D

now that would just be awesome... i'm imagining something the size of the current iPod's but with a screen that's the size of the whole front face of the unit. :D

I was able to download it. It was okay, could have been better. It would have had to have been a longer skit so they can have customers buy it and then a couple minutes later a new one comes out and have interviews outside an Apple store where they complain about the iPod that they just bought three mont--- er minutes ago not being the new iPod, although they thought it was perfect when they got it. ;)

Mechanical watches are the only watches. Forget the batteriestuff.
