The article seems to say that while menus will be larger for touch, that will ONLY be seen if you launch the menu by touch. I suspect a primary design goal will be to have zero changes visible for those that never touch the screen.

To be fair, the MBP is that important for Apple that they’re not going to mess with the forumla.

This probably good news: maybe the OLED touchscreen display will be more scratch resistant.

I will never use it as touchscreen, but, if this happens to indirectly resolve the endemic keyboard-dust scratches on de display, would even buy one.

So this means that instead of taking a year to give macOS some very much needed polish after the travesty that was Tahoe, we will instead have to deal with a whole NEW set of bugs and UI/UX compromises related to adding touch to macOS even for those of us who do not own or plan to buy touch screen macs???

I really REALLY hope I am being overly pessimistic here but... I'm concerned.

In all honesty - I may buy an M5 MacBook Pro ahead of this. Never had an issue with the notch on any MacBook, and I’m fine with iPads being primarily touch instead of the laptop

In general, if you don't really need/covet the new features then getting the next older model is often a great idea. The performance will be roughly on par and at a better price.

Especially as I bet the M5 Pro and Max models coming on March 4th are going to be continued to be sold once the M6 touchscreen MPS are out. People will be able to buy the old model for some time.

What I really wanted was a touch screen along with the code to support it, grafted on to a decades old operating system never intended to support it.

Why are people acting like adding touch support is this big thing that’s going to take gobs of new code?
Mac OS X has had default multi touch support since Leopard, iOS is literally built off of the same foundation as macOS, and more and more Apple Mac apps are just ports of iPad apps, including the latest updates to iWork.
Adding touch support for the majority of applications and developers will be nothing more than a switch flick in Xcode, especially if their app is already universal.

I really hope the touchscreen version is optional, not mandatory! Hate dirty screens and all laptops I used with touch are gimmicks at best and make the screen worse usually.

No, it would not. Upgrades to MBPs have happened within the same year before. Happened with my 2018 MBP. It is unusual though to include a major revision like OLED in the same year as a speed bump.

Some of the decisions in Tahoe make more sense if they’re designed for touchscreen. Now the implementation still has a lot of rough edges. TBH they should’ve waited a year before overhauling macOS like they did with Yosemite (launched a year after the iOS7 overhaul).

You turn it off. All you have to do is avoid reaching your hand to the screen. It sounds like any touch related UI enhancements only kick in when you actually touch the screen.

You can turn off the touch capability on windows laptops too. I understand I don’t *have to* touch the screen — I just want to make sure it’s completely disabled so it doesn’t accidentally go off.

Display battery all in one tiny case is not enough for Mac OS. You could already see mba with out fan running hot with separate keyboard, display and battery.
