it does kind of look Zune-like.

I couldn't see this going alongside with the ATV, unless they did a major overhaul of the product and increased the movies (and improved the prices) on the iTunes Store.

I was ready to buy the 40gb refurbed ATV this week. But I'm still holding out to see if they want to make their hobby a bit more serious...

Well that would at least explain why Apple quit including the little plastic remote.

Perfect size for a touch screen keyboard

Safari on your TV? anyone?.. all you'd need is a keyboard and something to point and click with.
With an accelerometer and a touch screen you've got both!

Here's to an Apple TV update.

If they were to sell such an option, I hope its sold separately, so those of us with an iPhone/iPod Touch don't have to buy it.

If it had a built in laser pointer and could serve as a really cool presentation remote, I might buy it. (But I highly doubt Apple would do this). The iPhone is kind of bulky to use as a remote during presentations, and the little white remote lacks a laser pointer.

I'll argue that only an Apple-zealot Fanboi who never sees anything wrong with an Apple product could call the AppleTV anything beyond "marginally useful as a media extender for iTunes."

Uhmm.. yeah right. And iPhone is nothing beyond "marginally useful extender of App store and phone dialing"... iMac is nothing beyond "marginally useful all-in-one extender of MacOS".. etc.

I am not sure this would sell that well. But then I think to myself...its apple...of course it will sell well

Either it is a very useful multi-purpose device, or it is fake. I would be extremely surprised to see Apple create such a large and unusually shaped (not to mention likely expensive) remote for just the Apple TV.

Apple has failed products.

Appleinsider patent's agree, at least somewhat.

Here's what the naysayers are saying... "to clunky-zunelike-duh, whats the need..."

Here's the positive side... "Hey AppleTV out of hobby stage, and into mass marketing..."

Look into the patents that have surfaced regarding AppleTV and DVR like buildups- Really, there is a pretty convincing argument here.

Positive +1

It's about time. The whole "we only need a remote with 6 buttons" thing is getting a little frustrating. Even if they don't release a new remote, perhaps they could enable more features thru universal remotes. It is ridiculous that I don't have more control options when I am using a Logitech remote.

New Apple TV please!!! Hopefully two bundles.... one with this remote and one without if you have an iPhone or iPod touch. Both can be used to play games/navigate though.

+1 for buying it as soon as it comes out!

This thing is fake.

AppleTV needs the following:
• 1080p
• unlimited storage either by using a port to connect external drives or a solution to work in conjunction with AEBC/TC.
• More codec support
• faster graphics card and processor
• I would love to say addition of Hulu, Boxee, Netflix, etc. But I doubt Apple will allow this. But I guess we can always hack it.:D

I really don't care for a remote.
Just bring this by January 2010, please!!!:)

My logitech harmony 550 not only replicates the six buttons on the apple remote, but the separate stop/play/pause buttons on the remote work when watching a movie. What more do you want, I'm wondering? I believe the volume buttons on the remote can also be mapped to adjust the :apple:TV volume, but I have my volume is controlled through my AV receiver.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7C144 Safari/528.16)

They need to updat the Apple remote. I think a touch screen would be great and it would definitely make searching a lot easier. Using the iPhone is pretty nice but not everyone has an iPhone or iPod touch.

does anyone else see this thing as turning on its side and being a touch screen keyboard?

Edit: Oh, I guess so... 2 other posts already suggested it before mine. Darn, and I thought I had an original idea when I tried finding the word "Keyboard" on page one of the comments and got no results.

Well, now I'll combat the idea: such a device would be difficult to hold and type on. Thumb touch screen typing works nicely on the iPod Touch and iPhone because you can use your other 4 fingers to wrap around the back and hold it steady. But if this thing is a remote, you're not going to be setting it on a table like a normal keyboard or laptop and it looks too unwieldy to both type on and hold steady without a table.
