Right, we’ll just have no battery life at the end of our GPS-using commute.

Wireless CarPlay is clearly designed to go hand in hand with Qi chargers built in to cars. You get in the car, dump the phone on the charging area, and away you go with wireless CarPlay without needing to fumble with wires.

Sure, for short trips you can not even take your phone out of your pocket, but just watch that battery dump.

This. The idea is that you still take it out of your pocket just do not need a cable in your car. That may not seem like a big deal, but I had having the cable by my center console in my current vehicle.

Pfft, give me an old eBay-savaged iPhone, and I could make something just as nice if not far far better!

Wireless carplay! That's what I want. None of this take your phone out of your pocket and plug it in like it's 2015.

Haha... Still have to "plug in" my Xs MAX into the AUX jack (in the rear of center console), using a dongle, in our a 2011 Range Rover HSE...
I'll do you one jankier better; I made a broken pair of Bluetooth headphones into a cassette dongle so I could play music in the car from my iPhone wirelessly.

I'd rather automakers just use a standard Double DIN setup for their stereos, perhaps add a larger triple DIN standard too. So that consumers can add Carplay to any vehicle they want. Better yet add internal USB and standardized communication with onboard equipment and controls. So that those aftermarket system can easily accept any radio controls and receive info from any other car systems the factory radio would normally display. Without an array of complex adapters. One can always dream.

Manufactures make profits on each and every add on and differentiates their products. One reason for the rapid rise in the costs of automobiles. They are not interested in making it easier for us consumers by standardization.

This was the main reason I didn't buy a RAV4 last year. I ended up going with a Ford Escape. I only wish they had wireless Carplay.

I love CarPlay in my 2017 Ford Explorer but every time I plug my phone in I think “I can’t believe they didn’t make this wireless.” I hope all car manufacturers add wireless CarPlay within the next year. It would be an added bonus if they could figure out a way to add it to previous model years via a software update or something.
I agree. I love my 2018 Escape but it seems so silly to have to plug in my phone. Surely Carplay should be able to work wirelessly over Bluetooth you'd think...

Finally. In the market for a new tundra but will wait for the 2020 now.

Yup. I have a 2015. The included system is 'ok', but carplay would be nice. I goofed and didn't pay the extra for better speakers and the full navigation package so I'll probably trade this one in a few years.

The truck's a beast :)

can apple please just make a car stereo already? isn't this exactly how things played out pre-iphone? running apple software on inferior hardware made by the likes of motorola, etc .. ?

I didn't believe Carplay would make that much of a difference to me, however, after having it in our VW it is a feature I will look for on any future vehicles.

Are there any aftermarket CarPlay radio head unit able to still have an iPod Classic as an audio source as well?

I am probably in the minority, but I don't mind plugging in my iPhone on my 2019 Subaru Forester - it keeps me from physically looking at the phone, yet I have access to what I need(music, Waze, phone calls, text by voice).

I'm sure everyone here is a wonderful driver, but on average I'm glad that other people have to plug in their phone too.

This probably depends on the software in your vehicle. My Forester head unit can read USB drives with music, I'm guessing an iPod Classic might work but haven't tested it - and I'm unsure if mine even still turns on.

Hoping this will catch the eye of the right person. I'm sort of in the market for a new car and I'm looking at getting another Camry.

Either a 2017 (last of eighth generation) or a 2018-2019 (night generation). They just added CarPlay to the 2019 model though the 2018 has the same head unit - just no CarPlay.

  • What are the best options for an aftermarket head unit with CarPlay in a 2017?
  • Will Toyota retro fit a 2018 with a 2019 head unit that has CarPlay?

Yup!! as of 2018 it was still drum brakes in the rear. There is a video that explains why.... but I still don't get it. The video was cool, it was showing a Tacoma getting unstuck from a sand pit and I guess disc brakes would be ruined.

You're referring to CRAWL control, which is basically the computers handling the braking+acceleration in order to handle tire spinning in off-road conditions. But since the 4-Runner also has CRAWL (TRD Offroad and TRD Pro), CRAWL isn't reliant on drum brakes. I'm just guessing that Toyota is just being lazy on switching to rear disc brakes on the Tacoma.

Yes, but I have read drum brakes are great for off road and more people use a Tacoma for off road then towing. The drum brakes also squeal less in sand (in the video I saw) over disc.

Crutchfield would be a good place to research this. Search by your model/year, brand, CarPlay/Android Auto, price, etc. You’ll be looking for usb aux input as an option. Alternatively you could use a headphone port as well.

Ahh... the F150 with the 5.0 is a way better truck.... you should really consider cross shopping

Better gas mileage and better towing for sure. Unfortunately it's a Ford though so will be plagued with reliability issues. Literally everyone in my family has an f150 and they always have electrical issues, braking issues you name it. The 2018 models with crash detection are screeching to a halt on the hwy with no one around, it's bananas how bad the electrical systems are in a Ford. My uncle's truck has had the tranny replaced at 30k miles fortunately still under warranty. I've wanted an F150 for as long as I can remember but I'll likely never buy one because I can't convince myself it's worth the headache.

I have a 2006 Tacoma with almost 200,000 miles. I had a Camry with 300,000 miles on it, I am sold with Toyota’s. They are perfect, but they are reliable. I will never buy a US made truck again, nothing but issues with them.

I wish Toyota would follow Mazda's lead and allow installation of CarPlay on previous year' models that have that awful Entune/Scout system installed.

Was just about to ask if this was possible. I'm assuming it's the same hardware unless the 2020 4runner gets a refresh. Why couldn't they just allow all 5th gen 4runners to get an update to enable it
