What's ranked voting?

We need to retire the EC. It's been manipulated past it's usefulness, and the fact we constantly have a handful of swing states that decide the election because of the EC, is proof it's not working. Popular vote. 1 person, 1 vote, then count them. The candidate with the most, wins.
Ranked Choice Voting is in my state and everyone I talk with hates it. It does nothing but add more confusion to the election process. It should not matter if you receive 50% of the votes when more than 2 candidates are on the ballot. If three candidates are on the ballot the one with the highest percentage of votes should be the winner.

100%. The issue is that we don’t have any data on 3rd party candidates and what they can do when elected. There are no 3rd party mayors, governors, judges, city council members, nothing. If you want a serious 3rd party, you have to start locally, then move up to state and then federal. Educated voters want to see data on what a candidate has done. So to be a viable 3rd party candidate, you need a political history in office.

The only 3rd party candidate who did something, as minor was it was, was Ross Perot. He made it on stage against Bush and Clinton. No one before and since has.
We have more than two parties. Green,Librarian and many more. The trouble is the two parties have a stronghold on the political system in the U.S.

I am already tired of this whole election and I am not even in the US and on top of it, the results will probably take all week smh time to streamline the whole voting process and how about moving it to the weekend ...? like that would make sense.

Just think, TOMORROW we wake up and the endless bombardments of political ads/spam/TV/social/Radio are behind us for about 1.5 years or so. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

And far more important than who gets to veto is who controls the legislative branch where just about anything to be done originates. Yes, the Pres. has "executive order" powers but most anything & everything to actually occur in America generally starts in the House and is refined/evolved in the Senate... and then the Pres. can either veto or not veto.

Get the Pres right- whatever you think "right" is- but the legislative election wrong, and the consequences can be just as bad- or worse- than whatever you can imagine will come from the election of either Presidential candidate.

Hopefully, people vote(d) wisely for their representatives and senators... vs. being towards entirely focused on a Pres. Hopefully, when each voter faces/faced actually filling in those little circles, they voted for the best PERSON for each job vs. just blindly voting party affiliation across the board.
Except tomorrow will bring, “The world is going to end, WWIII will start, and we’re all screwed” no matter which party wins.

Apple News is providing Live Activities support for the 2024 U.S. presidential election, allowing iPhone and iPad users to track electoral results in real time directly from their Lock Screen.

The feature is rolling out for U.S. users over the course of Election Day, November 5, providing continuous updates of the electoral count. So if you're interested, you don't need to repeatedly check news websites or unlock your device.

If you have an iPhone 14 Pro or later model running iOS 16.1 or newer, or an iPad running iPadOS 17 or later, you can activate the feature through the Apple News app. Setting it up in advance ensures you won't miss any updates when coverage begins. Open the Apple News app and tap the prominent "Follow Live" button when prompted.

When active, the Live Activity will appear as an interactive widget on your Lock Screen – you can quickly access detailed coverage with a tap. For iPhone 14 Pro and newer models, updates will also be visible in the Dynamic Island at the top of the display, even if you're doing something else on your iPhone.

Note: Due to the political or social nature of the discussion regarding this topic, the discussion thread is located in our Political News forum. All forum members and site visitors are welcome to read and follow the thread, but posting is limited to forum members with at least 100 posts.

Not available this side of the pond. Here November 5th is Bonfire Night where people remember Guy Fawkes, reputedly the only honest person to have entered the Houses of Parliament 😉
With the fraught situation in the U.S.A. I hope the traditional children's rhyme " Remember Remember the Fifth of November, gunpowder treason and plot " doesn't come to pass.

Managed to get it by signing into my secondary US Apple Account in “Media & Purchases”

Have had this account for a few years now so not sure if you need a US payment method to sign up nowadays or not.
Would that not mess up your phone settings? …. Like your calendar and stuff??

Hahah, absolutely not! I don't need this kind of stress in my life and there is nothing I can do at this point.

After work today (230ish), I'll be logging off and not using the internet, my phone, nor watching tv/streaming until tomorrow morning. I'll do a nice trail run, re-hang the gutters on my barn and my wife wants to transplant some blueberry bushes.
Bold of you to think it’ll be over tomorrow. If only we could be so lucky. I have a feeling we should brace ourselves for the long haul (months).

Except tomorrow will bring, “The world is going to end, WWIII will start, and we’re all screwed” no matter which party wins.
I mean the reality is the man they claimed would start WWIII didn’t, but his successor moved us much closer… that’s just objective fact there looking at the state of the world.

Edited for using the opposite word of what I meant lol

Wow, this is quite useful, but it is sad it’s only available for U.S. users, because U.S. politics affect the rest of the world.

By the way, I have a question for all the USA citizens here on MR: Would you like it to be more than two alternatives to vote for?

Here in Europe we usually have several parties (some are more liberal, others more conservative, and others are in between), and I’m glad we can choose from more than two candidates/parties, even if they have to form coalitions. But at least there you can vote for the candidate you want for the Republican Party or the Democrats, as in some countries like mine, you can just vote for the only candidate of a given party. Candidates are usually chosen by the party itself, which I think is a flaw on the system.
You have to study what our founding fathers thought when they setup the Federal System in 1787. The 2 party system first developed from the the President and Vice President. In the beginning the presidential candidate that lost automatically became VP. Candidates actually ran for the VP office. This quickly became unworkable. So you had 2 people running for president, 2 parties. it started with the Federalist Party (The Wigs), and the Democratic Republican Party. The Republican Party was built as an abolitionist party on what was left of the Wigs in 1854. The Democratic Republican Party became the Democratic Party in 1834. From this side of the pond we look at the Parliamentary system with is multiple parties as somewhat chaotic. It used to be in the beginning that Senators were nominated by the State Governors and ratified by the State Legislatures, only Representative were directly voted in by the people. The Electoral College was added because the Founding Fathers realized that all of the people in the sparsely populated frontier of the US would be disenfranchised because most of the population in the 1780's was in New England. They called it "The tyranny of the Majority".

I set my region to the US for the App to show up and then enabled the live activity. Now I went back to my own country and while the App is gone from my home screen I hope the live activity still works.

Live activities work on all iPhones with certain iOS as far as I can remember, not just the 14+. My 2nd gen SE allowed me to enable the live activity and I enjoy them weekly.
