Geez was I the only one who didn’t get this red tape!!! I’ve been eight IUP since it’s first year and never seen tape like that. Only tape that came with it was a sheet with 2 clear slabs to throw on the box.
My trade-in kit shipped back via FedEx, it did not have the red striped label, just the 2 clear ones.

A friend of mine just did a trade-in, his shipped via UPS and it did have that red striped label.

Thanks,

looked it up. Says .9 lbs. Is that what it should be? Crap that seems light
All this discussion on the weight of the package made me look at my UPS receipt... The weight of mine says 22 lb 5.2 oz... You sure you had a phone in there? lol. Just kidding. My iPhone Pro 12 was just really heavy I guess...

A couple of years ago I had something very disturbing happen (non-Apple related). I sent a care package to my daughter in college. Was a small brown box of a variety of stuff. When she got the box...it was a larger, white box. The address information was still there: the cover of the brown box had been cut out and taped to the new box.

The contents of the box were the same...with the addition of a can of hair spray, and two (unpackaged) 9-volt batteries, loose in the box.

I drilled down on this with the USPS. They were able to track where the package had gone, site to site to site. At some sites, they took photos of the incoming packages. Where those were available, the box still looked correctly like it did originally. But somewhere between the last photo and the receipt at her college dorm, this had happened. They had no way of knowing where it had happened, beyond the last photo. Or why it happened. Or who did it.

I know that this was probably an isolated occurrence, I think someone specifically tried to sabotage the box. Was my daughter targeted specifically? That seems unlikely. Was it just done to get this potentially explosive or flammable material to go off somewhere, like at a USPS station or the school?

I no longer use USPS to mail packages. Even though I believe it was totally random, it's just something I do to somehow assure myself that I'm "taking precautions." You know, I'm one of those types that tries to anticipate anything bad that might happen and to try to be aware of things I can do to protect against it (see all my posts about trying to decide between the 13 mini and the 13 Pro, lol). And people close to me roll their eyes at all the research I do into simple decisions. But then this happens, and it unfortunately validates all that care and stress to that part of my brain. Because it's a helpless feeling.

Freaking out. Someone from fed ex stole my trade in. Apple said they received an empty box. Has this happened to anyone? I’ve been on IUP since it started and an iPhone customer since the first generation. Do you think Apple will side with me? Those criminals at Fed Ex are pro’s I’m assuming so I bet the investigation will not find any proof they tampered with the box. Ugh. Great start to my day!! Advice?

by the way, I dropped off the box to the fed ex counter in person and got a receipt. Not sure that will help. Apple did ask me if I video taped myself packing it. Seriously? Is that what we all have to do now? I told them, no, I followed the instructions for trade in exactly as written. Geez.
Not all FedEx employees steal stuff. An people are stealing stuff no matter where someone works. I’m FedEx employee that care for people package.

Thanks so much for your loyal service. Sorry if I offended. I just assumed considering it was only in the hands of Fed Ex employees until it was received at apple. It could very well have been an apple employee at the final destination.

Gosh that is so scary!! I’m glad your daughter is ok and nothing detonated or blew up or whatever. So strange how they nailed it down to that last scan and somewhere in there it happened. Makes you wonder!! I’ve had bad experiences with USPS too. I guess all mail carrier and delivery service companies have bad apples. Really infuriates me.

My son used to work at Fedex and occasionally packages would get damaged and they had a department that would repack the ones that looked ok to send on. I can imagine that maybe this happened to yours and some random stuff got included that was not part of your original items. Just a thought.

It certainly is because it’s crime of opportunity know these are high priced items going to/from known brands. I avoid any trade in that involved shipping and always opt to trade in store esp anything worth more.

In fact yes, that was one possibility, USPS does something similar. It is a reassuring thought, you're right. But randomly, an aerosol can and loose batteries? I would hope that there would be some documentation, either photo or paper, acknowledging that this had happened. But...it's in the past. Though clearly not too far in the past if I'm still dwelling on it.

And it's one of those parts of life where, if you're a control freak, you're giving up that control. The item is no longer in your hands. It's not in the hands of its intended recipient. It's some third party, whose name I don't know.

Lol like how did OP not realize this? No one who is trying to sabotage the box is going to use a new box and tape the original address from the old box onto it. That sounds exactly like what some idiot at the post office would do with a damaged box. Including the accidental addition of other loose crap that was sitting on the counter at the time.

Can you take a trade-in item to an Apple store even if you've been sent a kit for returning it via FedEx or another shipper?

I usually take my old items to a local store but that option was not available this time when ordering online at Apple.

Just 10 minutes after I dropped off my 11 (non-pro) on Tuesday at UPS….I was kicking myself. Why didn’t i just drop it off at the Apple Store which was another 1 mile down the road. So many things can happen when you ship. Luckily…just checked my emails after reading this post and they’ve received it, checked it out and are giving me the full refund quoted when I bough the 13. Whew 😰

This is why I always trade mine in at the actual Apple store, sad to say. Also, I always have my iPhone shipped to the store and I pick up at my convenience and of course I make sure there’s a phone in the box lol

One can return the trade-in (via IUP) at an Apple Store and disregard the trade-in kit? I wasn't aware of this option. I would've definitely done that, got it out of the way immediately..

Fed ex drivers having a field day. On another world like sneakers especially from Nike aka SNKRS app packages are being stolen. Packages are being swapped out with other shoes. We talking sneakers that resale for 2-3 times it’s retail value. Just last month a fed ex box from Nike was lost and stolen from fed ex doral location in Miami. Package never made it to me. Nike refunded me. That shoe was reselling for 5 times the retail value. I buy/resale many shoes. I rather take my chances with ups but I hate it that Nike still uses fed ex. So again I’m not surprised now phones being stolen. Now with pandemic packages being stolen has gotten worse. Many people don’t know about it but when you move 15-20 packages a month like me I’m aware of this.

Me too. We received one of these boxes today at my location in NJ. The red tape had been cleanly cut and re-taped. Box empty.

We nailed a driver stealing sneakers this year. He's currently awaiting sentencing for grand theft because the value of the sneakers stolen was over $20,000. He's toast and will probably see real jail time.

thats happened to me before… airports return were totally stolen but Apple spoke to me on the phone. I mean literally have order 50 plus apple products with my apple ID. when I initia apple care and shipped my product I make sure I hand it to someone with a receipt and apple said that would protect me. Hopefully I never find out. this thread makes me not want to ship it back anymore when I have two apple stores near me.

There are too many stories like this.

I think apple is getting scammed by whatever 3rd party logistics companies they have partnered with.

Someone in the press should look into who these partners are and follow the money.
