Pro Tip:
Don’t use the box that Apple sends you for a trade in. It’s too recognizable. It isn’t required. All that’s required is the label. Use your own box - A bigger box, then nobody will know what’s in it.
Anyone at Fedex can look up the tracking and see the destination in full. Also the return label says Phobio.

My stickers were clear.
I guess as long as they’re there. I’m getting ready to ship today. I’ve followed some advice here. Took a video of FaceID working. Took pics of the serial number, etc. I have two stickers I’ll be adding on this box.

dang that sucks. I received no emails or anything that mine was headed back to them. Just happened to check my credit card and it showed a credit so I was good.

It happened to me today. Returning my iPhone 12 Pro on the iPhone upgrade program FedEx told me the shipping box was empty and the item was missing. As with previous examples in this string apple took care of it after my telephone rants for two hours or so. They changed the delivery to received and within an hour or two informed me by email that the phone was inspected and approved. The FedEx tracking site still shows that there is an exception and it has been unable to be delivered. Apple should really stop using FedEx.

I know how frustrating this is as I went through this mess last year with 3 trade-ins. Clearly there is a theft problem with the return phones.

Hi all, I'm in the same boat. I sent my iPhone 12 Pro as part of the IUP trade in via Fedex, it was delivered a week ago on 10/4. Today I got an email from Apple saying I haven't shipped my phone. Called up Apple Support and to my shock, they said their notes that they received an empty box! Which is total BS since I most certainly shipped my phone. I've been with the IUP since it's inception, first time something like this has happened to me. They said they will open an investigation and I will hear within 5-7 business days. I just have the Fedex drop off receipt & a picture of the front of the sealed box.. It is so unnerving, waiting to see what happens next.
Hi all, just wanted to update that 2 days after Apple opened an investigation, they approved my trade-in and closed the case. What a relief! I wasn’t asked for any evidence etc. It appears this is now happening often enough that they might have realized this is a bigger issue at their end which they need to sort out. Anyways, glad that the matter is closed for now. In future, I hope they allow those on IUP to trade in our phones at local Apple store.

Glad to hear you got your trade-in completed. Taking the old phones to the Apple store should be an option and would be good for those who are near one. In my case it isn't feasible since the nearest Apple store would be a round trip of a little over 5 hours.

You can always always always walk into an Apple Store and trade it in. They will inspect the phone and give you a receipt. It does not matter if you have been sent a shipping box. If you live near an Apple Store, take it there in person.

Thank you for clarifying, good to know the trade-ins can be done at an Apple store.

Just an update to my story. I called FedEx today and they told me to file a claim because my trade in has not moved since I dropped it off on September 30(essentially they didn’t help at all). When I went to FedEx.com to try and file a claim it says the shipper has a claims handling agreement for whatever that means. I had contacted Apple last week about the return disappearing. Now I’m still in limbo.

A couple of years ago I had something very disturbing happen (non-Apple related). I sent a care package to my daughter in college. Was a small brown box of a variety of stuff. When she got the box...it was a larger, white box. The address information was still there: the cover of the brown box had been cut out and taped to the new box.
Hah. I can beat that.

Some years ago, a publisher sent me a package containing specimen mathematics test papers for 7-11 year olds.

What I received (with, apparently, the correct label indicating the sender) was some sort of publicity "pub crawl" kit for a certain brand of botanically-flavoured alcoholic spirit. Contents included shot glasses, a number of hi-vis wearable flashing orange hazard lamps and a number of... er... protective products of interest to promiscuous but responsible males. Please be assured that there was no actual alcoholic spirit included, although the alluded to protective items were suitably flavoured (according to the packaging, I hasten to add).

Really not sure how that happened - but someone out there had a really boring, but educational, pub crawl - just hope it didn't result in unplanned parenthood.

I kept the shot glasses.

Maybe depends on local store policy? Last year I tried and they said they were not accepting any trade-ins in store due to Covid. Not sure if this year things changed or not, I decided to keep the 12 Pro for my son instead of sending it back.

is there any way to track an iPhone that was sent back via Fedex without the tracking #? My wife dropped off both our phones for trade-in at the fedex depot and didn't take a picture of the tracking # or get a receipt. My phone made it there yesterday, it was inspected and the loan was closed, but on apple.com hers is still not received.

I had a similar problem last year with all 3 phones I have in the IUP program.

The phones were traded in at different times over a 2 month period, in each case I was accused of sending back an empty box. I demanded an investigation, after about a week on each case, the phones were located, I was told they were "misplaced".

This year I am making recordings of shipping the return phones. In an uninterrupted video, I recorded powering off the phone, placing it in the return box, clearly showing the shipping label, and placing it in the pickup box. I have completed 1 of the 3 trade-in this week and thankfully no issues, but glad I had the video just in case.
How did you shoot the video? I would have a difficult time shooting a video with one hand while packaging an item with the other. Did you have a friend shoot the video, use a tripod or stand, etc?

Just looking for advice/tips. Thank you.

Try the "track by reference" option, use the 10 digit phone number that was used with that phone as the reference number.

The video was made using my phone, a friend helped me with it.

I had this very same issue with a express replacement that Apple sent me via FedEx. The tracking number said it was delivered (to the wrong house). When I called FedEx, they told me that they have some sort of agreement with Apple and I'd need to contact them. Fortunately, the Apple rep I spoke to was accommodating and ready to ship me another phone for my trouble. Luckily FedEx ended up delivering my replacement iPhone the next day.

But in this instance, definitely deal directly with Apple, they can reach out to FedEx and deal with them.

Thank you. I had messaged apple the a few days ago to make them aware of the situation. They said I should get credited but still makes me a little nervous that my phone has practically vanished.

Folks buy yourself some red security shipping tape and once that's on the box is kind of hard to open and steal without obvious signs. Mine leaves a tampered film on the box once removed kind of like void stickers from manufacturers.

Ups and FedEx have become so unreliable anymore they loose more packages daily. Today my new phone was delivered to my front door when I went to get it it was not there WTF! It was in my rural mailbox! Big difference between a door an mailbox suck lazy morons.

Freaking out. Someone from fed ex stole my trade in. Apple said they received an empty box. Has this happened to anyone? I’ve been on IUP since it started and an iPhone customer since the first generation. Do you think Apple will side with me? Those criminals at Fed Ex are pro’s I’m assuming so I bet the investigation will not find any proof they tampered with the box. Ugh. Great start to my day!! Advice?

by the way, I dropped off the box to the fed ex counter in person and got a receipt. Not sure that will help. Apple did ask me if I video taped myself packing it. Seriously? Is that what we all have to do now? I told them, no, I followed the instructions for trade in exactly as written. Geez.
FedEx will verify the Weight of the package when initially given and the Weight of the package when it was scanned in transit. They also have X-rays of packages to determine if there is something in the box.

Send returns with an Airtag haha! Just kidding, sort of...

Just came back from a week on the road from eastern Canada thru western CAN & USA, 9x flight segments, 3 different airlines. I had airtags on all my checked and carryon bags just to see how they would work (I know they are not intended as "lost/stolen item" trackers), worked fantastic...as soon as I hit my seat I checked Find My and every time all bags pinged in as "With Me".

Sorry didn't mean to hijack this thread.

My trade in box took 7 days to get to Denver. I had the old phone ready so all I had to do was put it in the box. I dropped it off at a nearby FedEx office within an hour of the box arriving at my house.

It took a full 10 days to go from Denver to Elk Grove. I was able to track it via the FedEx app but the Apple Store app didn't show the tracking for the return. I was relived to see it had finally arrived. The Apple app showed it had been received and was being inspected.

However, the next day I received an email from Apple that my phone hadn't been received and I needed to respond to the message or the return would be invalid and my monthly payments would continue. I responded to the email with screenshots of the delivery from both the FedEx and Apple apps.

In the Apple app it states there will be a response within 24 hours about the inspection. It's been 4 days...96 hours and counting thus far without any change.

I think that just as the supply chain is broken for the transportation and delivery of goods worldwide, the return process is currently broken.

A few years ago the box sent to me was lost by FedEx. I went to the Apple store to see if I could turn in the old one there. They said no I couldn't because the return was very specific to the serial number and it had to be via a mailed box. Called Apple and got a second box sent. The due date was missed by a week but since I had reported a problem everything went okay. This was all pre-pandemic.
