Windows Tablets suck. Trust me. Windows laptops OTOH, are pretty good.

Endgadget can say whatever they want, I do not necessary agree with them. I tried this machine and for 499$ you bring home a system with touch screen (can do some sketching), able to play all known video format (without the need to use itunes/quicktime to do conversion), can run office, flash, java, software to develop applications and do light gaming. Applications like dosbox, emulators, or old adventure run out of the box.

On the other hand with the ipad (499$ the basic model)(tried this one too) you have to pay for most of the apps, the keyboard is not very good to type documents for a long time, and the filesystem is not existing. All the apps have to go through apple. When I used this machine It gave me the impression of being extremely closed with functionalities limited on purpose by the company to achieve better performances.

WTH!! I manage websites and several Windows Server and Workstations, Mac & Linux Workstations using my iPad. That's besides managing documents, Filling and signing Service Orders, etc. So if you use your iPad as a toy, maybe you were dropped on the head as a child for paying so much for a toy.
 
But anti-virus software chews up a lot more resources, while it works. You'll definitely need to switch batteries a lot. Like 3 batteries to one single charge of iPad's heavy use.

Running AVG free I did not see a big impact on the performance or battery life. Netbooks can stay on for 8h of battery I think it is more than enough for an average user.
 
Get a laptop. A real laptop. Ipads are a inbetween device. Portability and productivity in the form factor of a giant smartphone.it's more capable than a smartphone but not as functional as a laptop.

I have to use Windows daily for my job. Doing development on this rubbish is such a pain. Cygwin helps a bit but having to deal with Windows batch language and "/" vs "\" issues (just to name few problems) with this "perfect" OS makes me sick.

My life is brighter when i go back home and develop on Mac my personal project. Windows is good if you just use it to launch M$ Office by clicking or similar tasks.

It's hard to believe that more than 10 years ago M$ killed perfect OS called IBM OS/2, which was rock stable and had a beautiful insides with REXX language etc.. and never created anything even close to that.

You might tag me anti-Microsoft and whatnot but I do not care. My opinion based on facts not on emotions. I am in this field long enough to have my own opinion and I standby it.

Because basically the premise behind your argument is that you're having a hard time developing for Windows. Well then, you must be a crappy coder because literally millions of developers love and prefer developing on Windows.

It's ridiculous. You can do work 5x faster using a regular computer, and RDP isn't a good alternative to actually using a real laptop. It defeats the entire point, actually.

The iPad is little more than content consumption.

Also, doing some forms and changing some settings isn't managing sites. Writing the code for a site, changing some APIs, etc. is. And you can't do that without RDP, which, again, defeats the whole purpose.

It seems to be working for him though, and that's all that matters. He obviously doesn't care about a regular computer... 😀

Ah, but in the technology world, specs aren't everything (obviously 🙄). Although I personally don't use BlueRay, Apple should really consider adding the functionality (at least for those who want it). Just sayin'.

When it comes to laptops, specs are 90% of what you should consider. The last 10% is build quality and with companies like Dell, Asus, and even Acer making some really sturdy offerings lately, you can't complain about the build quality. Contrary to popular belief (although at 10%, it's not too popular,) a shiny metal unibody isn't worth an extra thousand dollars.

Yes it is. Apple's amazing design/ build quality combined with Mac OS X = priceless. 😀

I've tried other laptops out there, and none of them compare to my MacBooks - oh, and I doubt Apple would raise the price if they added BlueRay. If anything, it would be a build-to-order option. Enough with the rants!

There is too much hype around apple. Apple should stop with all the crap about windows and OSX as the most advanced OS in the world.

You were talking about intelligence? A few things you mixed up: I was not talking about developing for Windows as I do not do it. I was talking about developing on Windows and on a Mac.

Second thing: Do not lie about developers love developing on Windows. Most of them just don't have a choice same as 90+% people in this world do not have choice but have to use "perfect in every way" (as you put it) Windows OS.

Do you need to be reminded how people would receive an email with M$ Office files attached which they couldn't open with M$ Office they bought just awhile ago? Lots of us were forced to use M$ products.

So do not talk about "love developing on Windows". Stop twisting facts and talking about intelligence in the same post.
