The translucent menu bar is definitely still around, and looks like *** IMO ...

It looks kinda cool if you can see your desktop wallpaper, but as soon as you open a fullscreen app or even just have a window pressed up against it, it suddenly looks cheap, gimmicky, and tacky.

Here's a screenshot I put together in Photoshop:

The PPC Mac Mini with the Radeon graphics chip does not support Core Image.
I don't think Core Image is the issue, as the lack of transparant menu has been reported on Powerbooks too and they do support Core Image.

I guess the issue might be the "transluceny" thing (i.e. not just transparent, but transparent with a blur) that they simply decided to turn off on older machines, much like it is turned off if you try to use Vista on an old machine.

I actually really like the transparent menu bar. Looks awesome, IMO. And even the updated look for the menu bar on older machines looks great. I just wish my copy of Leopard would get here!! I'm pumped!

i think it has something to do with the processor, If your machine isn't powerful enough it turns it off...
Also what are you using to color the dock? any problems?

I wonder if there's a plist setting for the menu bar transparency. Maybe it has to do with Core Animation (not Core Image). Core Animation is a brand new technology and may not be supported on ALL Macs.

I wouldn't mind figuring out how to do this on my CoreDuo iMac at home. I don't care for the translucency.

12" PB G4 1GHZ proc with Core Image capable GPU and I have no transparency :( Id at least like the option as to whether I wanted to waste my resources on it or not.

I don't much care for the transparent menu bar either. It wouldn't be bad if you could set its transparency! In its current state it's lighter than the drop down menus...

The Widget thing in Safari also isn't as awesome as I had expected. I thought you'd be able to add a form from a webpage to Dashboard using this tool and be able to enter stuff into that form right on your Dashboard, but unfortunately that isn't the case.

I don't have a transparent menu bar either. I was a little surprise by this at first but I guess it's nothing to get all worked up over.

I have a x800xt gpu. Its 256mb I'm sure it can handle the transparent menu bar but I don't have it... Any ideas?

I don't have Leopard yet... but I'm hoping for a solution also. Does this not work?

Update... nm.. doesn't work..

Non-Transparent Menu Bar
• simply put: doesn't work
We did actually have reason to believe that this would work during earlier beta stages of Mac OS X 10.5. However, the final Leopard's menu bar is opaque, and instead of letting the background shine through, it draws a blurred copy of your wallpaper. We hate to waste source code, though, so we thought of something else we could do with this — see our next blog entry.

Another thing I noticed was that the menu bar corners are no longer rounded. It looks really weird the first few times you look at the corners.

Yea I miss that too. It doesn't make sense to remove it as the top corners of all programs are still rounded!

Let's face it this menu bar is too busy trying to one up the Vista start bar...

Did you guys just say no transparent menu bar for Hardware that cant handle it? :p:p:p

It works with every thing, that works with Leopard. It is just LESS transparent then it was when steve demoed it/which might of been because of the grass.

Wrong.

I have the exact same desktop background on my Core Duo iMac at home (where its translucent) and on my PPC Mini at work (where it's gray).

At home (iMac), you can see parts of the background and different colors through the menu bar. At work (Mini), it's a consistent color/shade of grey across the entire top of the screen.

Both machines were installed-from-scratch (not an upgrade) from the same copy of Leopard.

Here's a screenshot from the iMac and the screenshot from the Mini if you want to compare.

Just noticed, when I'm at full resolution with my 30" display I don't get a transparent menu. However when I bring the resolution down I do get a transparent menu.
