My bar is transparent and I like it...for now. Question though...some of you have a black square with a number inside it on your menu bar...what is that?
That would be Spaces in the menu bar.

System Preferences > Expose & Spaces >Spaces Tab > Check "Show Spaces in menu bar"

Personally I think it's worthless unless you have more than 4 Spaces because it could get a bit confusing.

i don't have a transparent menubar but the dock is mirrored, semitransparent. on a g4 400. also the background from the menubar is static, the dock background is synco with your desk.

So are you guys trying to tell me that low endg macs got a flat menu bar to avoid the unnecessary syst resources??

It seems that the menu bar as well as being transparent also blurs the image behind it slightly as well, the dock shelf 'just' mirrors whats on the screen. I dont know how much processing power that blur effect takes though!

I want my transparent menu bar! The solid grey opaque stays the same regardless of any background used. This is disappointing that my first gen iMac G5 can't have it, because I was really looking forward to this.

Does anyone know if the new menubar could be possibly be enabled somehow on systems that don't have it?

I figure there will be a hack for it at some point, if there isn't already. Maybe someone else knows more.

I have my crossed that Apple will provide a fix in 10.5.1...

Seriously, Tiger's menubar is more pleasing to look at than a static, flat gray opaque. A number of us want the transparency.

Here's my screen:

wayfarer, how did you get a non 3d dock?

The quick and easiest way is to run these two automator scripts to switch back and forth.

I use my downloads stack to launch them.

thanks a lot! appreciate it

what exactly does it tell automator to do?

There are terminal commands to remove the 3D dock and use the one that is meant for the side :)

It really should be a GUI option, as should menubar translucency...

I agree, In 10.5.1 I'd really like Apple to allow the new transparent menubar on older hardware, have an on/off option in the System preferences, as well as a toggle between the 2D/3D dock. That is sure to make everyone happy. :)

let me remind you just how lucky you guys are for having Leopard...

I’ve noticed that when launching Aperture the menu-bar goes from translucent to opaque. That is definitely a Very Good Thing because a translucent menu-bar allowing a colourful desktop picture to peek through would be bad for colour-precise work such as people would generally be doing in Aperture. Since this application (I’ve only run Aperture 1.5.6 on Leopard) evidently forces the system to alter the menu-bar, it definitely adds weight to the argument that there’s just some hidden switch to flip between translucent and opaque.

I personally go back and forth on the aesthetic of the translucent menu-bar. I really quite like the new lighter silver of the opaque bar, so would quite like to stick to that.

It's quite funny that to a large degree everyone who has translucent wants opaque and vice versa. Definitely says something about human psychology, or perhaps I'm just making too many assumptions and reading into it far to much.

I was quite bemused when I installed Leopard and found an opaque menu bar sitting at the top. Initially I thought that my PowerMac G5 wasn't up to the challenge of rendering a silly little bit of transparency despite having the technical ability to do so. On this point I was very annoyed that several features in the new iChat have been disabled for PPC users as apparently the processors aren't up to the challenge? I'm not entirely certain but would I be right in suggesting that my dual 2Ghz G5 is more powerful than some Intel Core processor in a Mac Mini?? Either way I would prefer it if the feature wasn't disabled altogether but allowed PPC users to endure any lag or low frame rates if their processor was not up to the challenge which I doubt is the case.

Until I read this thread I thought that Apple had removed the translucent menu bar altogether but I for one am glad they didn't and hopefully 10.5.1 will give us an easy GUI switch to toggle in System Preferences.

So do we still not officially know who gets the translucent and who doesn't in terms of machines?

Obviously my current gen iMac 2.4 GHZ gets it.

However, my Powerbook 1.5 GHZ G4 with 1.25 GB of memory does not.

I would like it on my Powerbook at some point too.

here is a theory. Apple is just forcing obsolete down on everyone. If you have a intel chip you get it. If you have a PPC chip you do not get it. I bet apple claim will be that the PPC computers can not support it which we all now is a load of horse crap.

I have a PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz 1.5 GB of RAM and I have transparency. I have the 17-inch model with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 64 MB VRAM, though... so that probably makes a difference.

Damn straight. That's not a theory it's a fact !

I have a 15" 1.5 GHz PowerBook G4(with a 64 MB Mobility Radeon 9700 too), and I get a translucent menubar. I don't really like it so I've created a desktop wallpaper with a light grey bar at the top to get a Tiger like menubar...

My girlfriend uses an 867 MHz PowerBook G4 (12") and the menubar is opaque. However, she claims she saw the menubar turn translucent for a very short time while loading Microsoft's RDP client... Strange behaviour.
