So I tried the iPhone 5 at the Apple Store today. Just as I expected, the screen was not impressive as it is still so puny compared to every other major smartphone on the market. It really needs more surface area, specifically width, in order to be useful to do things like reading webpages in portrait mode comfortably. A 4 inch 16:9 screen was good.......3 years ago. This is 2012, get with the program Apple. Trying the iPhone 5 out in person has cemented by decision to go with something else for my next smartphone. After trying the Samsung Galaxy S3 and seeing its much larger screen, my God, what a revelation on what I've had to put up with on the tiny screens of iPhones.

Apple was never going to double the screen size. Every smartphone on the market has made a gradual increase in size.

By the time Apple make it bigger the bigger screen phase will be over as they will realise people want smaller practical phones not phones which should be tablets.

Apple would never have even went 4" if it meant they couldn't make it 20% slimmer.

I think the iPhone 5 is the perfect compromise in size between a 4S and S3. Maybe YOU don't like the new aspect ratio, but a lot of us think it's fantastic and are loving it every day. The S3 is the first real Android contender against the iPhone in my opinion, but Android still isn't that good and the phone is quite challenging to use one handed. To each their own.

So Samsung is coming out with a SIII mini lol.. so how revolutnary is that? i mean people want bigger screens and all....lol

So what is the thread starter going to say now?

I actually find the screen size on the ip5 perfect. I have no problem reading webpages or magazines, books, etc. I actually tried out the Samsung GS3 last week. I like the screen, contrast was good, but the phone didn't feel right in my hands. It felt pudgy and cheap.

To each their own.

I find it perfect for a phone as well. I don't get what everyone's obsession with a big screen is. I thought the 3.5 inch screen was perfect as well on the other iPhones and was somewhat surprised they even decided to make it a little taller. I've seen phones with huge screen sizes that just look ridiculous and make the phone seem like a mini tablet.

I tried the iPhone 5 in a store and wasn't impressed at all.

• I have an iPhone 4
• Saw the phone, didn't recognize it was a iPhone 5, but thought could be
• Looked at its back and confirmed, was an iPhone 5
• Extended screen was really noticeable to me
• Switched it on, played 5 Seconds with it and lost interest.

As an iPhone 4 user there are functions that makes me wanting to buy the iPhone 5. I want something new, the iPhone 5 has nothing new. I don't need LTE, don't bother about the longer screen. Nothing in it for me.

+1. Went by Best Buy last night and played with it a little. Although faster than my 4, it didn't seem any faster at all than my sister's 4s. Granted, I was just moving around the menu. I'm sure LTE would be faster, but I don't use my phone's Internet much. I have Internet access at work all day and have a Google Nexus 7 at home.

I honestly probably wouldn't take advantage of many of the benefits of the 5. I mainly just call and text. I sure hope the 5's phone call quality isn't worse than the 4. I will still probably purchase a 5 because my power button is hardly usable (pressed nearly all the way down). I may get white just to change things up a bit and feel like I have a different phone. Sorry for the random thoughts here. I'm sleepy today.

Some people are just a glutton for punishment. On the positive side if you like your white screens to appear blue the Galaxy is unbeatable!

If it's true, do you really not see why they'd come out with a smaller SIII? Is the concept of choice really lost on you?

I guess Apple fans (not necessarily you, Cableguy) are so used to things being one way that it's difficult to fathom choice. And so a smaller version of a device is seen as some sort of concession like it's an admittance of some fault?

I don't know, but it's amazing someone can't see this as a good thing for those who prefer a smaller screen. It's not like they're halting all production of the current SIII to go with the SIII mini.

If you prefer your iPhone, all good, mate, but don't see why anyone would hate on a company trying to please more consumers.

no offense taking and agree on every point. Apple and Samsung have done well in their niche market. Just glad I have a choice. Sii and Siii were my 2nd and 3rd android devices and well the Sii blew away the HTC phone I had which left me wondering why I left the iphone, but after going thru the new Galaxy phones I found it not to my liking.

Everyone has their desires on an ideal product, just how bad do you want it. reason why people should do their research before buying always.

You know what's particularly nice? As members of the Apple ecosystem, our forums generally don't have these kinds of questions:

(from an Android forum) 1) In the States are we getting the Exynos Quad 4, the MSM9860(dual core S4 w/Adreno 225), the MSM8960T(dual core S4 w/Adreno 320) or the APQ8064(quad core S4 w/Adreno 320)?

Wow. Just, wow. What kind of geek do you have to be to make heads or tails of that model nomenclature?

Two minutes poking around those forums:

1. Makes you realize just how whacked other makers really are

and

2. Gives you very clear insight as to who is coming here and trolling. Just check out the most prevalent writing style. Pure adolescence.

I like the screen size also. I wish they could keep the screen size and still make the phone smaller and thinner. That would be perfect in my opinion.
