The fact there are millions of people (outside of PRC) willing use Chinese applications which by law pass on info to the Chinese communist party and they have no problem with that, but they have a problem with the American President wanting to ban said application, is just mind boggling.
This coming from someone who can't stand Trump.

He’s not a president, he’s a lab rat in a suit.

No. Also, he has no power to ban it here in the U.S.

If Apple is prohibited from working with TikTok and has to cancel their developer account, then TikTok won’t be available in the App Store for any country.

(whether or not that can be done in the first place, I don’t know)

We are talking about a potential global ban here. What right does Trump have to dictate decisions of those who had nothing to do with electing him?
He has the right to dictate what US companies do, which incidentally play a dominant role in many of the technologies we use today, including both iPhones and android phones.

It's a massive interference of the government in the free market, which the USA allegedly take quite seriously. It's still not clear to me exactly what justifies such a draconian intervention, be it legally sound or not.

I don’t use any of these social media stuff, but again, it’s the downside of having no way to install Apps from outside the AppStore.

The only way i see to escape this, is to move away from Apple, and I’m still researching for the best way to replace all my Apple Devices.
The iMac already got happily replaced by a highend Ryzen 3900x System. The hardest will be to replace the iPad Pro 12.9, currently looking at Wacom Tablets.

The emperor with no clothes is really upset about that under attended campaign rally in Oklahoma isn’t he? If he would have spent as much time, early on in the pandemic, listening to his own top health officials and promoting wearing masks perhaps our economy wouldn’t be in tatters and he’d stand a chance of being elected again in November. Oops....

The USA is not the world police. Who are we to tell other countries how to act? If our administration had any foreign relation skills, we could leverage diplomacy to unite against a common threat obviously being China. But no, instead, we're just going to tell you what you can do in your own countries.

Technically the USA is not telling other countries how to act: it's telling US companies how to act.

And people are talking about China being a tyranny. America, look at yourselves, you're equally bad, if not worse than China! At least with China you know what you get. America is still posing as the good guys, lol.

There aren't too many Americans that believe this administration is "the good guys". Still more than there should be, but far from a majority.

Apple already hates Trump. Would you look at that. Trump turning another great American company away from America. #MAGA

Ban it, then maybe we will get our kids attention back.

Or maybe parents should be better at their job?

Oops, I forgot, it's the government's job to raise children. Explains why everyone wants to hurry their kids back into public daycare, I mean, school.

I suspect he is trying to improve his chances of being reelected later this year by appearing to go tough on China. I do feel that Chinese apps such as Tik Tok and Wechat are inherently problematic by virtue of their ties to the Chinese government, though I agree that it’s one thing to ban it within the US, and another to ban it around the world.

At any rate, Tim Cook does seem to have cultivated close ties with Trump, and I wonder if he will be able to use this influence to steer Trump into changing his mind or leaving some wriggle room for Apple. Alternatively, if Trump does get voted out this November, the next president could in theory reverse this ban?

I shudder to think of all the broken bridges that Biden has to repair should he get elected.

You realize that the first to raise the issue was Chuck Schumer in 2019 and then again early 2020 right (following intelligence reports)?

No one disagrees we should thoughtfully approach the Tik Tok issue. It's universally agreed upon to be a problem at this point, at least by most voters. But you're forgetting that politics is the art of achieving a change for your constituents through managing relationships and working together. Trumps's approach here is to just crush any opposition through "Law and Order".
