No one disagrees we should thoughtfully approach the Tik Tok issue. It's universally agreed upon to be a problem at this point, at least by most voters. But you're forgetting that politics is the art of achieving a change for your constituents through managing relationships and working together. Trumps's approach here is to just crush any opposition through "Law and Order".

that’s another issue. Saying that Trump is doing it only because he’s mad of the alleged interference with his rally is ignorant at best considering that intelligence experts, DNC, GOP, Schumer etc all agree that it’s a serious issue. Now, the approach might be wrong, but the problem is very real.

Next on the ban list:
  • Books
  • News
  • debates
  • anti-patriotic criticism of the gov.
  • contact with non-Americans
  • Personal Opinions

The ironic part is that the American gov. is literally forcing companies to hand back information by law including a suggestion on ban on encryption and creating backdoors.

Just because it happens to align with other interests doesn't mean Trump isn't taking this action to retaliate for being embarrassed. What has he done at any time during his presidency that suggests he acts on any interest other than his own? And when has he ever acted according to the recommendation of his intelligence advisors?

Stupidity of a old a senile guy with absolutely no clue how to lead a country.

Nah, I disagree with him but Chuck Schumer is not senile.

That's your speculation, there is zero evidence that TikTok even had anything to do with it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a rumor introduced by China when they saw that the US was going to take serious action.

Now name me a country that does not spy, USA is the biggest spy out there.

Now name me a country that when finds a spy (or a tool to spy) doesn't take action to eliminate it.

A new document outlining the potential scope of President Trump's TikTok ban suggests Apple could be forced to remove the short-form video sharing platform from its App Store in China.

Trump last week signed an executive order that would officially ban any U.S. transactions with TikTok if its Chinese parent ByteDance does not reach a deal to divest it to a U.S. company in 45 days.

According to a White House document sent out to supporters and seen by Reuters, the ban aims to cut off U.S. business transactions, disrupt TikTok's funding, and eliminate its ability to operate within the United States.
The document is believed to have been written the same week as two executive orders signed by Trump that target Chinese businesses, one of which is Tencent, the owner of the massively popular WeChat platform.

The document does not explicitly mention WeChat, but if the Trump administration decides to subject it to the same measures, the consequences for Apple could be huge.

WeChat is heavily relied upon in China as a messaging platform, as an interface for numerous other apps, and to make mobile transactions. WeChat is also widely used around the world and has over 1.2 billion monthly active users.

In a worst-case scenario, Apple's annual global iPhone shipments could decline by 25–30% if it was forced to remove WeChat from its App Stores around the world, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

TikTok could avoid a ban if it agrees sell off its U.S. operations to an American company. Microsoft has publicly confirmed its intention to purchase TikTok in the United States and is currently in discussions with ByteDance. Twitter has also reportedly expressed interest in acquiring the service.

TikTok earlier this week said it intends to sue the Trump administration to keep operating in the US, and claimed the executive order is "based on pure speculation and conjecture."

Article Link: Trump Administration Considers Global TikTok App Store Ban

this is all so stupid. As coronavirus cases surpass 5 million in the US, Trump is banning a silly social network app solely because it is Chinese. Everyone in charge is jingoistic and idiotic, playing to atavistic fears akin to the yellow terror rhetoric that plagued the20th century

Did I miss something or is Trump now the leader of the world?

I don't agree with any censorship. Doesn't matter if it's Winnie Pooh or Angry Orange.

Facebook is spying on Europeans for years now without any consequences. Oh right, USA are "the good ones", while every other state that is not controlled by US is considered "the bad ones".

its not that US is the good ones. Is that china doesnt give many rights to its population. They are using their data to build AI and spy on what people are doing, while facebook is using it to advertised products

What does he fear to get leaked? I see this as an unofficial acknowledgement that the USA government sits around and swipe TikTok movies the whole day, and run it on devices which has confidential informations. Sounds like a trustworthy government.

Chineses don’t need a stupid Social Media App to spy, they surely have better ways. All this is just populism to gain votes by playing the good US patriot. The informations TikTok provides is pure unusable nonsense for the chinese government.

If Apple is prohibited from working with TikTok and has to cancel their developer account, then TikTok won’t be available in the App Store for any country.

(whether or not that can be done in the first place, I don’t know)
It's important to note that it is the American Apple that will be potentially prevented from working with TikTok. If Apple's European corporate headquarters wants to work with TikTok, I don't think anything prevents them from doing that.

It’s easy to finger point.

The point isn’t about whether the US is guilty of spying on other countries or not, but that Tik Tok has close ties with a government with a history of human rights abuses.

To put it another way, think about what is the worst that the US government could do with user data from say, facebook, vs what the Chinese government could do with Wechat or Tik Tok. In the US, you are criticised for not criticising the US government. Americans by and large enjoy unfettered freedom of speech and they all just take it for granted.

In China, people can disappear just for saying something negative about the CCP. Wechat is used to spy on and monitor its users, censor what can and cannot be said, as well as be involved in corporate espionage. Tik Tok has the facial, biometric and location data of an entire generation of US citizens which it can use to build a database, as well as use its algorithms to either surfaces or suppress content depending on what the agenda of the Chinese government is at any one time.

I am not saying that this somehow gives the US the right to police the entire world, but this may well be one of those scenarios where two wrongs end up making a right. Trump is clearly doing this for less than altruistic reasons, but if the outcome is ultimately the same, this move just might end up being on the right side of history after all.

The fact that China "doesn't need TikTok" is utterly simplistic. TikTok (or any other app) is certainly one of the many tools; the intelligence community agrees on that (and historically, they're not Trump's friends), as the DNC agrees on that (and I'd say they're not Trump's friends).

The fight about TikTok is clearly one of the thousands of pieces in the US-China relations; if the US Intelligence found out that China is systematically using TikTok to spy on American citizens (including government officials and political operatives) then the US can't just leave it be. Ignoring the problem because of Trump or because it's an "app for teenager" is certainly the wrong approach.

If it's legal for the administration to do this (possibly is), Apple would have to comply as a U.S.-based company. If they incorporated outside the U.S. they wouldn't.

/My comment does not indicate support of this executive action.

As most of Apple's revenue comes from outside the US, maybe Apple should change domicile. Especially if No. 45 is elected again.

TikTok is under investigation in Europe. Europe will follow suit, they are also worried about it.

Oh man, you're gonna want to sit down before you read this:

U.S. Tech Companies Prop Up China’s Vast Surveillance Network

Critical pieces of China’s cutting-edge surveillance state share a connection. They came from America.

Some of the biggest names in U.S. technology have provided components, financing and know-how to China’s multibillion-dollar surveillance industry. The country’s authoritarian government uses those tools to track ethnic minorities, political dissidents and others it sees as a threat to its power—including in Xinjiang, where authorities are creating an all-seeing digital monitoring system that feeds into a network of detention camps for the area’s Muslims.

Erik Prince: Blackwater founder’s new company to build ‘training centre’ in Chinese state where Muslims suffer persecution

Trump told China's president that building concentration camps for millions of Uighur Muslims was 'exactly the right thing to do,' former adviser says

Weird how some people think this is anything but an election year stunt.

First off....we actually do have a plague and its killing people in the 21st century....and its Chinas fault.

China has literally screwed the entire world over with little consequence. First economically and now biologically (and economically) with this stupid virus. A virus which they attempted to cover up and silence any whistle blowers many months ago. Either way its completely screwed up weather you believe it came from eating bats or escaping a lab due to incompetence.

I cant believe there are Americans who DONT want to crack down on China and their communist government. Seriously. Take everything else I mentioned above out of it. THEY ARE LITERALLY COMMITTING GENOCIDE with the Uyghurs in their own country in concentration camps!!

So banning a potential national security threat like Tik Tok is at least ONE legal thing we can do in this country. Apple is already prepping to move even more manufacturing out of there.

Sorry we are gonna piss off a few teens doing it. Instagram has already stepped in with a clone and major Tik Tokers are also prepping to take their followers elsewhere.

Of all the ridiculous crap China has done are we REALLY that upset over a silly app ban?????

Trump may only be in office for another 83 days. Tiki's Toc says that they would take this to the International Courts before taking any action!
Actually, it's 83 days until election - he'll be in office until January. The orange monkey can do a lot more damage in 150+ days :-(

THEY ARE LITERALLY COMMITTING GENOCIDE with the Uyghurs in their own country in concentration camps!!

Sadly most people in the US pay very little attention to international relations, which means that many don't see the complex issues. Thanks for mentioning the Uyghurs; I'd like to add what they did and do to Falun Gong members, let alone Tibet.

China is a serious, long-term problem.
