No one here wants to sit on line in a factory putting together phones. It's boring, repetitive work, so why bother relocating? I don't care where it's made.
And what happens if China decides the same thing some day? Trump is trying to stop the over reliance and absurd use of China for literally EVERYTHING. Even Vitamin-C is produced in China and we import it. This is ridiculous. We put too much power in China and I’m glad to see the push here. Probably the only thing I am in somewhat agreement with Trump.

Look I live in the UK, I had absolutely no ability to vote or not for Trump and yet everything he does is directly influencing my life. My pension dropped thousands, my investments dropped thousands- my business is based around Apple products so anything he does detrimental to Apple affects me too.

And I don't have any power to vote against any of this. He's operating on an insular American first policy in quite clearly a globalised world.

This forum is unavoidably an echo chamber (for the most part). Yes we all (almost all) see Trump for the incompetent wanna be dictator that he is. Apple's problem, though, is not merely a calculation about the cost of Trump's tariff versus the cost of moving (some) manufacturing here to the US. Apple also has to worry about Trump's stupid cult-base. If Apple fights back, if it does anything less then at least pretend to kneel before Trump, it could lose 10-20% of its sales in the US when Trump declares he's switching to Android and dumping all other Mac devices and asks his cult followers to do the same. I am assuming his cult members already use Android to a greater extent than the average US population (due to age, education and income demographics), but even if it were only 10% of Apple's sales (of iPhones and the rest of Apple's ecosystem products) in the US, that would hurt much more than a 25% tariff.

Bottom line: Apple has to do everything it can to avoid giving Trump a reason to politicize his base against Apple (which is also why Target, Walmart, Amazon, etc. bend the knee to him).
Sure but on the flip side if they go too far with their appeasement they’ll lose sales absolutely everywhere else lol

Recent Tesla sales figures should be a clear warning.

Apple could absorb the Tariffs, but why, do what has already been mentioned, line item stating "Trump tax"!

The problem with moving manufacturing here is that we do not have the skilled labor force necessary to do it, and it will only get worse since Trump is also gutting research funding and basically hates science in general.

The US in general hates science or anything that has to do with being smart. Sports is glorified, higher degrees and teaching vilified; so called business majors are propped up. Pretty much the reason Boeing, Intel and all of these other has been tech companies are starting to falter is that they are all run by bean counters and not engineers.

And what happens if Cuba decides the same thing some day? Trump is trying to stop the over reliance and absurd use of China for literally EVERYTHING. Even Vitamin-C is produced in China and we import it. This is ridiculous. We put too much power in China and I’m glad to see the push here. There are ways to strengthen domestic production. What Trump is doing, however, is totally inept, and does more harm than good.

More like 18 months. Short of declaring himself World King, the Dems will take both houses in the mid-terms, then the orange painted shitgibbon is in for a world of hurt.
We've been saying that since Jan 7th, 2021. If we have learned only one thing from literally every legal battle, court ruling, and election that has happened since then, it should be that Trump is immune from legal responsibility, does not follow the law, needs not follow the law, and will not follow the law.

In a reasonable world where smart people vote and honest justices follow the law, Trump would be in jail and the GOP would have imploded long ago. We don't live in that world. It is foolish to assume that any legal means of removing him (including the end of his term) will actually result in his leaving the White House.

Should have already been transitioning production to the US. Nobody made them do it. Now's the time. Twenty years is long enough.
Apple most definitely should not have been doing that. American workers do not want the sorts of low-paying, low-benefits factory jobs that are plentiful in China and India. American consumers do not want to pay the prices that would result from doing this. Companies like Apple would be competitively disadvantaged relative to Chinese companies that could rely on cheap labor operating with few workplace protections and without the concept of overtime.

If we want American companies to thrive (and if we want American consumers to be able to afford nice things), let companies build and source their products where they believe it is economically most feasible for them to do so.

I already pay upwards of $2k for my phones, and if they were double the cost (and made in America) I would pay it because it is something I use often. I'd rather support America than a country like China. Slave labor is not something I support. Nor are wages that are slightly above getting paid nothing. But, to each their own.
They aren’t using slave labor in China. Their cost of living is lower than it is here. Many people in China view those jobs as an economic uplift.

Is there another mass market phone that is made in the USA? Tariffs only make sense if there is an alternative product that can be substituted for it. If there isn’t one then it’s just a generic tax on the public for anyone that needs a phone.
Unless he can create a law just for one companies product and not a category? I don’t think he can. This is all so silly.

There are over 100 parts in an iPhone.

Apple would need to build a factory to make the batteries... a factory to make the MagSafe magnets... a factory to make the side buttons... a factory to make the camera lenses... a factory to make the accelerometers... and so on...

I don't see any of that happening in my lifetime.

Besides... Apple themselves never manufactured those parts anyway... it was always TSMC, LG, Sony, Samsung, etc.

Apple gets components from over 40 countries around the world!

The good news is... Trump will forget about this in a few days and find something else to complain about.

🤣

I'm guessing Tim Apple wasn't invited to the Trumpcoin donor dinner last night.

Howard Lutnick really thinks we are going to put the screws in iPhones here, well good luck.

If Cuba decides to do the same, then they do the same. It's of no concern to me.

Freaking Vitamin-C is all in China. We need this to stop.

Not sure why you're so worried about Vitamin C. Pharmacy is my field, and most of ours (hospital) is sourced from India.

I'm just not that concerned about China. "We need this to stop" isn't a reason.

Pixel's are made in Vietnam and China.
Sure, I was just replying to the question “Is there an American company that makes Android phones?”.
Indeed both Google and Apple outsource their production to other companies (Foxconn, Pegatron, etc.) whose factories happen to be mostly in Asia.

Good luck getting the shareholders to approve something as stupid as this, especially when Trump is probably not even going to make it to the end of his term due to health issues.

Apple would rather eat the 25% cost than make large capital investments based on the whims of a failed businessman who changes his mind every 5 days
