Tik Tok groups destroyed Tulsa rally. Trump bans Tik Tok.
India banned them as well, but ok - Trump.

If anything, India may have left it too long, given the inroads made by apps such as TikTok, and the fact that the most popular smartphone brands in India are not just companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi, but also less Chinese-sounding brands such as Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus. (Vivo is the title sponsor of the popular Indian Premier League cricket series, a relationship that may well now be cut short before next year’s tournament.)

Modi and Trump are not that different. So not surprising they do similar things.

There are security and privacy concerns about any social media app (especially one with ties to the Chinese government!) but there are security and privacy concerns about many social media apps based in the US too (Facebook, twitter, instagram, etc...)

I'd believe this was a genuine move to increase security and privacy for US citizens if they actually made some laws and regulations to protect our privacy from US-based companies too! Or if they weren't also making it so the NSA can slurp up all our data without a warrant.

Let's be honest: this is purely a political move to do something against China after he dropped the ball combating the pandemic. And the reason he chose TikTok is because the TikTok teens trolled his Oklahoma rally with fake ticket signups.

(And for the record I don't use the TikTok app because of security concerns, but every American should be worried about a president unilaterally banning an app which has hurt his feelings. If it's insecure, regulate it and regulate apps like it. But you give away the game if you won't even allow it to be sold off to a US-based company.)

I agree with Führer Trump and his enablers on almost nothing, but I agree with this. (He also screwed up the TPP, which would’ve pulled the Pac Rim into a Western trade sphere instead of turning towards China, but that’s ocean water under the bridge. And the trade war is a sad, expensive joke.) But Our Dear Leader can come down on the likes of ByteDance and Huawei all he wants.

India banned a ton of Chinese apps because they're currently fighting skirmishes in the disputed Ladakh and Tibet Autonomous Region. Each claims the territory, each patrols it, and in June two patrols ran into each other and they fought. They don't carry weapons in the region (to avoid stuff like this) so they fought hand-to-hand combat and threw each other off the cliffs down the side of the mountains. Each side lost 20-40 men. Anyway, afterwards India banned a ton of Chinese apps as part of the escalation. So not really the same thing.

We don’t want this in the US. Get it out! And please China, take Mark and Facebook with you too.

They don't want Mark and Facebook either. 😂

Good riddance, I say. I don't care much about the fact that it's Chinese. I just think apps like that are an abomination and do nothing but further shorten the attention spans of our youth. Maybe THAT was China's plan? LOL

I don't care about TikTok one way or the other -- I'm more concerned abou Der Racist-in-Chief's quote, "I have the authority."

Maybe you do, maybe you don't. But the way you've been tinkering with the U.S. constitution for the past 3-1/2 years under the guise of the issuing an "Execuive Order" for everything (along with pardoning all your coverts-in-crime) -- and now you want to postpone the national election just because no one's stopped you from anything ever before .... No, sir, you cannot do that. And it says so right there in the Constitution.

I think Apple will buy TikTok.

Think about it...
-HUGE Millennial & Gen Z userbase
-Will re-write app from ground up to address privacy
-Can integrate Apple Music / AppleTV+
-It's the future standard of short video content on the internet
-Video creation tools/promote iPhone camera
-AI and algorithms
-Can negotiate deal for China exposure/manufacturing/not banning app (like FB)

TikTok isn't just high school kids doing silly videos. It's a powerful social media app. Don't underestimate it!

Fox News just reported (08:45 a.m. Saturday) that ByteDance has announced its intention to completely divest from TikTok.

Say what you will, but the man knows how to exercise political power.

In the present state, I agree with the president on this action. But after a sale to Microsoft it will be a completely different story. The administration should use their time and their influence to get the sale to Microsoft completed. That’s the best way to solve this problem ,if the president is really concerned about national security. And not about settling scores where a bunch of teenagers blew up his famous rally.

Maybe a better buyer for TikTok would be tRUMP himself. He has the money. When he's not tweeting, he can be recording short videos to all his followers without a threat of being taken down or censored. Of course, he'd fire everyone currently there and hire family, friends and donors to run it.

Tik Tok is a terrible service - I have literally never encountered a dumber “social media” service than this. That said: if people want to use idiotic services, hand over their private data to China and publicly and indelibly make idiots of themselves, let them. It’s not the governments business what people do with their private lives. I get that they don’t want any Chinese influence at workplaces, the armed forces etc - so ban it there. But as long as people don’t hurt anyone else while going about their private business, Trump should stay out of it.
And maybe, just maybe, there are some more pressing matters at hand right now?

Is it entirely his job? How much control do you want Washington to have over you?

I want Washington to keep me from dying, if possible.

What a joke. Ban TikTok (which I personally don’t care about) for safety and security reasons, but can’t do a national mandate to wear masks for public health and safety reasons.

What does banning TikTok for security reasons have to do with requiring mask ?

There are plenty of threads on Covid / mask in PRSI for those that would rather discuss Covid / mask.

never used tik tok
so many redundant social media platforms out there
new cold war usa vs china - though sutle
diplomacy is key
not war

I guess there’s a first time for everything; I actually agree with Trump on this one.

Next, if he could get to work on keeping my elderly relatives protected during a pandemic, that’d be just super.

Trump is such a clown. Be careful what you wish for.

Hard times coming for you my man.

Oof. Should of talked to your Democrat Governors forcing them back into nursing homes on that one.
