It's a portable device. I think if you took a poll of users battery life would be a priority. A larger screen at 7pm is useless if your phone is dead.

It has to be a compromise between screen size, device size, weight and battery life. On top of that you can compromise in thickness instead of height/width.

Or because of the physical button and Apples design philosophy of a symmetrical phone.
I agree with apple I do not want to lose that symmetry. Eventually there will be a redesign of the home button it will go in the form of a home sensor/fingerprint sensor,

Ugh, why did I have to read this....

Just when I was finally leaning towards buying a 32gb Air as an upgrade for my iPad 2, now I'm thinking I should hold out again....

Well they did a good job stretching that out didnt they. Lots be selling their perfectly good iPads later this year. Only apple could do this. mazing

I'm still not seeing the value of a fingerprint sensor on an iPad.

Agree...won't complain if they put it in, but I think the smart cover defeats the whole convenience factor - are we supposed to wake up with the cover and then use touch ID to unlock?

My Ipad never leaves home and I don't use a pass code - payments is probably the main reason on an Ipad.

If just finger print censor and speed bump, I am skipping iPad update for the first time ever this year.

----------

Seriously? What about to unlock the device / pay for things?

I don't really want a device to make it easy to spend to thin out my wallet quicker.

No, it's the iPad mini with Retina Display 2. :D

Seriously, I doubt there will be an iPad mini 3, as in non-Retina screen. The iPad mini with Retina will take over as the "lower cost" model, and the non-Retina mini will be history. Apple should just name its tables like its computers by leaving out the model revision number. There is no MacBook Air 2 or MacBook Pro 10 yet no one is confused on which is the latest model... well for the most part.

We'll you do have the Late-20XX, Mid-20XX variants on the MacBooks... But Apple doesn't use that for marketing.

i wouldn't use the touch id on an iPad, having no password makes it easier to use.

I've had every iPhone and the first iPad. Never used passcodes (well, temporarily a few years ago).

But with the 5S, getting into the phone is sooooo easy with TouchID. It makes it secure and it's still just as easy to get into the phone. It's actually easier.

I can unlock my phone with the screen off.

security aside, it's quicker and easier and more awesome than slide to unlock. I expected it to kill the passcode, but it ended up surprising me and killing the slide to unlock and I am pissed when I pick up an ipod or ipad without it.:D

Exactly the same value as a phone I would say. I can't say I'm crying out for a sensor on either a phone or ipad but I will refresh both this year (4S and 1), looking forward to all the other new features/improvements though

iPad Air 2 will be the sixth gen iPad. The next iPad mini w/ Retina Display will be the third gen iPad mini. If you count iPhone 5c simply as a repacked iPhone 5, then iPhone 6 will be the eighth gen iPhone.

Fixed the typo. Also, I thought that was a given for iteration of iDevices. Hence, I fail to see why or how that would have been different with the next one.

?

iPad, iPad 2, iPad w/ Retina (3), iPad w/ Retina (revised, 4), iPad Air, Air 2?

Ain't gonna happen.

Why not? Especially with fingerprint sensors, where the kids can have their "own" iPad and can't mess with the parents' stuff. Or if my wife isn't interested in the apps I use and vice versa, or at least not in the same order of importance.

You have bought every new iPad model so far? Unless you have a long line of people receiving hand-me-down iPads, that's weird.

----------

Please don't! There is no place for user accounts on iOS devices.

Explain why not. I really cannot see why you wouldn't want a feature that is optional, doesn't affect you in any way if it isn't used, and is very, very valuable to a lot of people.

As long as iOS doesn't offer multiple user accounts, it makes it more of a one person device leading people to buy more than one. IMO, multiple user accounts would be great for the consumer but may cost Apple sales.

I skipped iPad Air this year for TouchID if Apple will give iPad air touch ID this year then ill be spending a lot on Unlocked iPhone 6 and 64 GB iPad Air 2.

And what do you plan to do if the new iPad Air doesn't get Touch I.D.?

----------

Only when I buy things at the App Store will this be a convenience. Otherwise, I don't even keep a lock code on my iPad.

Well maybe you don't use yours for work or take it out of the house. I use my iPad Air for business and I hang out at my local cafe. If I were to lose it in public my life would be stolen on that machine if I had the mentality you have in regards to not opting to use the lock code feature.

Besides all the obvious uses, how about an option in iCloud:

"Get the finger print of the jerk who just stole your iPad"

That would be nice, but it is impossible. Apple has intentionally designed the finger print sensor so that it is impossible to extract any data out of it. (For good reason, if you look at the amount of paranoia that was displayed on MacRumors when the first reports of fingerprint sensor came out). Once it is programmed to recognise a finger print, it can check whether the finger you hold on the iPad is a programmed fingerprint or not, nothing else.

Of course if you find a suspected thief, and a stolen iPad, and you think the thief stole the iPad, you could ask him to use his fingers to unlock the iPad, and if it works, that would be some evidence against him. But there is no way to go from thief -> iCloud -> police fingerprint database -> identity of thief.

In my case, it makes it a less convenient two people device. And there are visitors; nobody is going to buy an iPad for visitors to use, but a "visitor" account would be very valuable.

Imagine multiple user accounts in iOS 8 ... then the ipad fingerprint sensor would make perfect sense for me

LOL, multiple users sharing an iPad? In my household every will have their own iPad before I do that. Seriously though, while I understand YOUR logic in that, I can't see at all how it's practical to pass your iPad around in the household and for an office environment most people should have their own but I can at least see where multiple user accounts might make some sense as you may have to share one at work.

I'm in complete agreement, I think the option for multiple user accounts should be there. But from Apple's point of view, they'd prefer us to buy multiple devices instead of sharing one and IMO, this is why there has been no rush to support multiple user accounts thus far. And the following post is a good example of why Apple probably is in no hurry to do this:

Sounds like you don't need it just yet, and can wait. If you can't you'll just get what's available right now. Most of us have been there - "should I get it now, or wait for the next update". Personally, I'm waiting for the next mini and will order it the day it will be available. Hoping it will get released this year.

Apple really needs to re-think how they name things. Reminds me of intel cpu chips how they also moved from numeric/alpha to alpha/numeric.

Its standing to be getting a non contiguous world.

Now that Touch ID has made its way to the iPhone 5s, (I'm happy with mine), its just another useful technology Apple just must go crazy and build into all future mobile products.

This just proves the point.

You would think Apple would be rational about this like "If you want Touch ID, get an iPhone 5s "make it unique so it sets it apart from the rest" like Retina on the Macbook Pro's.

However, now-days, doesn't really matter... Just wait a year, or two, and Touch ID, or Retina will be available on every device basically. Give or take one product.

There is no *uniqueness* anymore.

Apple has trained us to use these devices as personal devices. Why on earth would Apple want to start a trend letting their customers share their devices when they can just sell them another?

Hold out for what? What do you think Touch ID will bring to the new iPad that can't be done on the current iPad. Go get your iPad and be happy. It's pretty super as is. Here's the funny thing. People are giving mayflynn grief because he doesn't see the value of Touch ID on the iPad. I agree with him. Most iPads never leave the home or the car. A 4 digit pin code input takes what, half a second? Touch ID takes what, a quarter second? <-- (those are just conversation estimates, not stopwatch times:D) Outside of an implimentation of multiple users, Touch ID holds no value for me either. Even then, I could live without Touch ID if I got multiple user capability. Come on Apple.

To me Touch ID was a cool solution to a problem that didn't exist. That doesn't mean others don't find value in it. It just means I don't.
