I love even the idea that somebody could sue a software company for THEM crashing their own car. I suppose the phrase 'only in America' could apply here -? I hope so, at least. It'd be like suing the publisher of an road atlas, or the manufacturer of a mobile phone, for your own stupidity whilst driving.

The lack of a real voice-based turn-by-turn navigation app on the iPhone is ludicrous. And embarrassing.

Pull your heads out, Apple.

why do people need this? seriously...

the built-in google maps gps works just as well as this $40 ($20 for East; $20 for West) app. the only difference is you get some semi-fancy ground level view with a little arrow and some distance markers.

who cares? just turn on your free app, google maps and tap the gps location button to bring up your location via a blue dot; type in your destination you want to get to; zoom in a little so you can read the names of every single street; follow the path and dot; and I'm sure your brain can do the rest to get you to your destination.
It's not just a blue dot, there's also a purple line.

No I think MMS and cut/copy/paste is patience testing. This GPS thing, not so much.

Voice commands would be great if the iphone's speakers actually worked above a whisper volume and you could hear the phone while driving. I suppose if you had an AUX input for your car speakers it would work....but then you can't listen to music and use GPS at the same time which is lame. Lets face it, GPS on the iphone is fine for the occasional "I'm lost and need to figure out where I'm going" but otherwise it's really not that useful for driving.

GPS was the main reason I bought the iphone. So I signed up to a long contract that I'm stuck with and a icripple only later to find I got bummed by Apple.

Apple need to act fast

I got this G-Map West yesterday and used it last night. I was actually very surprised at how well it worked. There was no voice prompts, but HONESTLY when I've used GPS Navigation with voice prompts, I still always have to look at the screen when I'm turning. This because many times there are a few options of ways to go within 5 seconds of each other and it's hard to know exactly which street to turn on without looking directly at the route.

This solution FINALLY satisfies my needs and what I've been wanting out of my iPhone ever since I bought it. I now feel like I haven't been cheated by Apple because this app is out.

Since you bought the app I have a question for you. Can you listen to music from the iPod app while using GPS? That would be great :)

Other than that I think TomTom and the like will phone :apple: ASAP to ask "why them and not us"? I fear the App is a short lived one, unless :apple: allows all the others to jump on board.

The publicity the App received will put it well above :apple: 's radar now. Let's see what happens. Hope they don't pull it from the store and block it...

Thank god! Navteq blows Teleatlas away and ever since Navteq stopped supplying Google maps, google maps has been a complete joke. I have to use live maps :(

Navteq got bought out by Nokia.

Nokia have their own Map application bundled with their cell phones, so maybe thats part of the reason.

Great. I'm certainly not slating the efforts of G-map whom are obviously working within the constants imposed by apple. Word of mouth is a powerful thing.

I wish I could tell people how great the iphone is. I just can't. :(

To be honest, it's quite obvious that people would want to use such an application to use in their car while they are driving on their own, so the manufacturer better take that into account. It would be quite easy: As soon as the software detects that the iPhone is moving at > 30 miles per hour, put up a screen that says "you know that you can't use this while driving. Type "passenger" if you are the passenger".

.

Yup, you can start a playlist and then go into the app and the music continues to play. I don't have an external remote or anything, so to change the song I have to go out of the app, but when I go back in, it resumes the route I just had in. So it's no biggy.

Seems ok

I just got this app and it seems ok. It's a bit disappointing that it can't pull up addresses from your contact list, but I guess that a restriction from the sandboxing. One of the things I already like about the app is that when you move the dot is always traveling "up" or forwards. This was one of the things that kept throwing me off with Google maps. I always find myself confused about which direction I was going and whether I need to turn left or right ahead.

I don't care what Apple does, they just need to have a GPS app. Whether they provide it or someone else does...I don't care...just make it happen. Not having voice commands is a retarded restriction. Also it is annoying that you can't listen to music at the same time. :(

However, I do feel a little better now that I have a "real" GPS app...now we just have to wait for a 2.0 version. :)

I think they won't jump on board until one of the big name manufacturers does, and then they will all want to follow. At the moment, they don't lose sales because of the iPhone. If one big name creates an app, then the others will lose sales and follow up. If you see a TV advert "Garmin now available on your iPhone", then TomTom will be one week later. But as long as none of them does it, they are all fine.

I'm sort of scared with all these people that are...dying of heart attacks from the fact that you have to glance at the phone for directions every now and then.

They are probably the people doing 30 on the 45 limit roads, braking going down every hill and going around a slight bend at 10 MPH, with 300 cars queued behind them and causing every accident you think of, unaware of it all because they're too busy looking straight on.

Do you guys you know...glance in your mirrors every now and then? Or do you stare straight at head until you get home?

Because glancing at a phone is JUST like glancing in your rear view/side mirrors. If the thought of glancing at anything other than the road ahead of you is frightening to you, you need to turn in your license. Next to old people and teens on the road, the biggest dangers are timid drivers. Not an app from the appstore that you can glance at to get your next goal.

*sigh*

I would much prefer people occasionally glancing at their phones for directions than trying to type in "passenger" while driving.

Exactly. Or tuning your radio, putting in a CD, drinking coffee, lighting a cigarette, eating a hamburger, etc. This list could go on all day long.

This is like wanting to sue fast food restaurants with drive throughs because they're knowingly selling burgers and drinks to people who might actually eat in the car while driving.

And then the driver will attempt to "text while driving", which is worse. :)

There's a shortcut that might be useful to you. You can set your phone/touch to bring up a mini-player type display when you double-tap the home button. This allows you to skip/pause/etc. without exiting your current app. It even works when the phone is playing music with the screen locked.

Oh boy, I can see it now. Litigation against fast food restaurants for having a drive-thru window, thus contributing to the DWI (Driving While Ingesting) epidemic!

You scan ahead you to make sure it's all clear for the duration you're texting, there's no sharp bends coming, children, potential deer etc. Or you do it at a stop light.

Anything can get you into an accident if you're stupid about it. :p
