well, at least this one is out there, so hopefully more will follow. $20 seems kinda a lot for this app though. that's probably why it's getting not so good reviews

Shet, I paid 50 bucks for a map app for my iPaq (yes that was a few years ago) but regardless, 20 bucks is cheap. Ppl are just so used to only paying 4.99 for iPhone apps but when a true app comes along 20 is way to much. NOT. 20 bucks is just fine for the type of app and what it does. I mean, it's not a "jiggle your gf's boobs" app.

Sorry, your logic totally escapes me. They might think the practical differences between the two apps are not significant enough to make the new one worth $20 AND using either of them while driving is unsafe due to lack of voice prompts.

bingo! someone here has common sense.

I just got this app and it seems ok. It's a Also it is annoying that you can't listen to music at the same time. :(

However, I do feel a little better now that I have a "real" GPS app...now we just have to wait for a 2.0 version. :)

why - does the ipod background music not work when using this app?

... even though the map is stationary, the iphone is really small...all you have to do is rotate the phone in your hand as you make a turn...not hard at all....

Or, you can twist your neck, or just drive always North....

Why do you guys keep defending Apple for one the most glaring shortcoming of the iPhone?

A whole bunch of near-free phones have voice guidance, but the Apple super-phone can't manage it (just like cut/paste, or a landscape keyboard for email and text, etc..) Yet there in every thread there is the chorus of the faithful, singing "I have no other God but Apple."

The iPhone needs turn by turn, with voice, and with world-wide maps. If you travel, you'd know why. And I don't mean travel to the grocery story.

That's why I still keep my HTC WM6.1 phone, running iGO 8 (much better than TomTom, IMO) And that's why I've been looking at replacing it with a HTC Touch HD, rather than a 3G. I don't like the WM6.1 lurking beneath the HTC UI, but it does all I need it to do (and it has 3.8 480 X 800 screen, 5mp camera (stills and video, it's unlocked... http://www.htc.com/www/product/touchhd/overview.html) But I might just hold out for the next gen iPhone in the Summer, hopefully Apple would finally make it into what Gen1 should have been.

I just got this app and it seems ok. It's a bit disappointing that it can't pull up addresses from your contact list, but I guess that a restriction from the sandboxing.

No, that's not a limitation of sandboxing. You can get that in any App today. Its just a limitation of the app.

I think it is on it's way since Copliot demo'd their app at CES. Hope we will all be laughing when we have the choice of all the best navigation apps for our iphones.

If one of the big guns gets their app on the appstore I will wait before rushing to buy it. Unless it is tomtom :D

TomTom has already stated they have a "working" version of their software on the iPhone. I would pay upward of $50 for it...

Apple better have a good reason for not allowing this...

This tears it. If the app doesn't use audio cues, why would it lock off music? Part of what I love about having an iPhone is only dealing with one device when I leave the house. Bringing my iPhone to use as a GPS, and my old iPod to use for music defeats the purpose.

How is the app about saving your settings? If you get a call and have to leave the app, will it snap back to the same settings/destination as when you left the app? It would be horrible if it didn't autosave this kind of information in the middle of a long trip.

I'm not singing Apple's praise. I'm not defending Apple. I'm telling you and others to quit being so freakin' lazy and just rotate the d@mn phone.

If you lack the coordination to rotate a cell phone for orientation purposes, then you should not be operating a motorized vehicle.

How to Use GPS Safely Without Voice Prompts

I used my old Palm TX with a bluetooth GPS unit for serveral years. In my car, I used velcro to mount the Palm in the middle of the steering wheel. Glancing at it was no more hazardous than glancing at the rear-view mirror or the fuel gauge. The only time I ever turned on the voice prompts was when I was using it in a rental car and didn't have the velcro mount.

You can bet I'll now do the same thing with my iPhone and the g-map app!

There seems to be conflicting information in this thread regarding music playback while using the application. I've seen one post that stated it worked, and another that said it doesn't.

Yep can someone pls confirm either way who has the app.

Rotating the phone doesn't change how the map is oriented with respect to the phone. If you're heading East/West, you have a very narrow view of the terrain in front of you and a very wide view of all the stuff off to the sides that you have no interest in.

Just tested it and you can play music while using the app.

west/east

Ok, I live on the LINE. What happens when you travel from the east application to the west application. Would love to buy this, but I travel a lot from the east area to the west west, and don't want to have to change all the time. Any information would be helpful.

Too Weird!

A *tad* off-topic, but I KNOW THAT INTERSECTION! It's several miles west of Richmond, Virginia. Bizarre.

idea

since apple won't allow VOICE prompts, how about basic AUDIO prompts? Like a slowly increasing ping on the left audio channel for an upcoming left turn, and a slowly increasing ping on the right audio channel for an upcomping RIGHT turn? They could get closer together as you approach your turn, indicating distance to the turn, and you'd know which way based upon which ear you hear it from. It'd be REALLY cool if they could mix it in over your music, rather than cutting it off.

Hopefully, someone from the company is watching. ...and hopefully they'll be able to tell me why I can't copy it to my phone despite the fact that I have several gigs free. Weird.

They should really provide a "middle half" map for people like you.

Yeah. That was me driving at 3am, testing the app. (I'm in Richmond)

Middle half Map

Does anyone know what happens when you drive from the east map to the west map? This would help make my buying decision a lot easier. I have no problem paying the $40 if that's what I need to do, but if it's a pain switching between, if may not be worth it.

Worthless

These apps will never make it.

1) The iPhone GPS Antenna just plain sucks. Period.

2) Try driving with this type of app on for 30min and feel how hot the back of your phone is? Can you say, "reduced longevity?" I can. A power supply is mandatory, unless your going around downtown.

Maybe the iPhone will be up to this task by the 4th or 5th generation.

My Garmin ain't goin anywhere for a LONG time. :apple:
