🤔 guess anything is better than the current remote.

I need a new Apple TV. My Ethernet port stopped working. I really do not want to purchase the existing 4k model.

Hmmm... a center button... and maybe a D-pad for up-down-left-right?

You know... like almost every media remote control ever made?

🤣

Tim Cook: Today, Apple is re-imagining how you and your family interact with entertainment. We are giving you more control over your devices and content in a brand new way, revolutionizing how you watch your favorite movies and TV shows. Introducing, Apple Control! (Holds up a Roku remote with an Apple sticker on it)

The problem with the Apple iPhone remote app is the lack of TV volume controls.
Yes, but not just that.

The iPhone Remote app takes all the bad things about the Siri Remote, and just makes them even worse:

Sudo D-pad on the Siri Remote, no D-pad at all on the Remote app.
Endless swiping on the Touch Pad, Touch everything on the Remote app.
Lack of physical buttons on the Siri Remote, no physical buttons at all on the Remote app.
No mute button on the Siri Remote, no volume at all with the Remote app.

I guess the one benefit is that the iPhone is harder to lose and has a find feature.

Still, I rather not keep my iPhone with me all the time when using the TV. It is great with I am out, but I hardly touch it once I am home.

Please keep the touch surface. It would be a huge step backwards to have to spam click the down arrow to get down the page, instead of swiping with slow or fast gestures to immediately get to the right place.

Never really understood the hate. Unless maybe it’s the “picking it up upside down”... but how long does that really take to correct? .04 seconds to quickly spin around? Plus isn’t that what the raised “menu” button was for? If anything, make it look like the iPhone’s Apple TV remote interface like the article described. That way you wouldn’t pick it up the wrong way. Just please keep the touch pad, and volume buttons.
Same, the new one feels fine. Problem is the Apple TV UI in general. For something that's a dedicated media playing device, its interface should be better for that than a generic thing like macOS, Windows, or an iPad, but it's not. Part of that also has to do with the 3rd party apps being 3rd rate.

Just given the usual responses here and in general tech media, I must be in the extreme minority in that I enjoy using the Siri Remote quite a bit.

It's one of the very few remotes I can use and know all the buttons without ever needing to look. And I love using the touchpad for scrubbing, especially with how you can get some fine control from accelerating or sliding slowly.

Speculation:

The center button refers to something not unlike the big Xbox or PlayStation button on consoles.

I therefore theorise Apples new remote is in fact a proper games controller for all devices. Apple will be talking about it at WWDC as they’ll want devs to code for it day one.

Also Apple will announce some 3rd party games coming to ATV 5.

Anything other than the current design would be great. Possibly the worst design from Apple is the TV remote. Sure it’s sleek, form over function never wins.

I hope Apple redesigns the remote, it is the most frustrating one I've used. Swipe here, swipe tehre, opps the dogs tale changed the channel...
Or, as in our case, one of the 2 cats we have, steps on the remote.

looks like the stupid swipe pad is gone

The swipe pad is good. I hate using other TV devices now and not being able to easily scrub through videos.

The problem with the Siri remote isn't the touch pad, which is a great idea in theory, but the dumb symmetrical layout of the remote and the lack of attention paid to ergonomics or how it feels in the hand. I'd definitely keep the touchpad. Just bulk the thing out a bit so it's obvious how to use it, or at least which way up you're holding it, without looking at it.

I could live with it if they refined it a bit.

I don't think they will do away with it completely anyway, certainly if this beta code refers to a new remote then there will be some kind on touch pad it seems.

Just came here to say that the Apple remote is right up there with the hockey puck mouse. It's a truly atrocious piece of hardware. Anything they can do to make it better would be welcome. Just please don't use the services of anybody from the same design team involved with the previous remotes (hopefully they're all enjoying a well deserved dirt nap somewhere on the Apple campus).

Makes me wonder if folks could choose between the Apple TV 3 remote and the Apple TV 4 and 4K remotes at time of purchase. Bet a lot of folks would never complain.

Agree. If they offered a cheaper SKU with just the basic non touch, non voice remote. It would fix most of the problems with the Apple TV.

How about press or press and hold instead of swipe. Swipe, for me at least, works inconsistently and often goes past the target.

My issue is the general lack of tactile feedback when you pick up the remote to identify where the controls are. It's symmetric and unless you look at it it's hard to tell which end is up.
That’s... better than spam clicking yeah but I feel like it would be like the backspace on iOS. You hold it down to erase multiple letters... and the longer you hold it it starts jumping backwards faster and faster. Letters turn to words turn to sentences turn to the entire page deleted. Sarcastic of course but you get my point hopefully. It’s hard to control or guess when it’s gonna start jumping faster.

I get that, but if you notice, the bottom glass has much more friction than the smoother trackpad on top, so I always know which way it’s facing. But again, the tactile feedback is from the raised menu button, no?

Agreed. It’s a garbage app. Google doesn’t care about Apple users, only to mine our data.
It became a garbage app when they changed it from following Apple conventions and the player to rolling their own which was the same as every other device (i.e. lowest common denominator design).
