I have two HomePods Mini connected to my AppleTV. They also worked as an “Audio System” for my Mac Mini. I’m not sure whether it was the tvOS 16 or the latest macOS update that caused it but my Mac Mini only uses it’s built in speakers now. I tried to set the audio system as default in system preferences but the computer would not hold the connection.

The only thing I noticed is now my secondary users have to “update their Apple ID” by holding their phone or iPad with OS16 close to the device.

Problem is one of my users only has an iPad and iPadOS 16 hasn’t come out yet. Good work, Apple.
I have this same problem. At least one Apple TV has as its iCloud account an account that only has one device that uses it - an old iPhone. However, to complete the TVOS 16 update, the iCloud accounts have to be updated, only by an iPhone and that HAS to be running iOS 16, which mine does not.

This has to affect many users. It is utter madness for Apple to only allow such update by the use of a very late iPhone. Why no option to add the data manually?

As it is, it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to complete the configuration update required by TVOS 16. IMPOSSIBLE. Not hard, or a PIA to do manually. IMPOSSIBLE.

Ya it’s brutal. Like do they expect us to take a different device and sign into the Apple ID on that device just to do this stupid update?

tvOS 16 has the following problems:-

After the update, all accounts need additional 'configuration' and the only option is to use an iPhone/iPad running ?OS16 (despite iPadOS 16 not having been released at the time). There is NO option to enter anything manually so any AppleTV accounts that are not also used as a main iCloud account on any other very recent device CANNOT be updated in tvOS 16 and therefore the big red flag remains in settings with iCloud features not working for that account.

On waking the AppleTV, the screen shows 2 buttons to 'View new Terms and Conditions' and 'Not now'. The first option just takes you to a screen with a single option - 'Sign out', so no viewing any T&Cs at all. The second option just repeats the process and the same screen is displayed again. Selecting 'Not now' a second time seems to finally clear this - until the next time you try to use the AppleTV.

If in order to clear the annoying red flag claiming additional setup is required (only by iDevice running ?OS 16) you sign out of the main iCloud account and back in again, you WILL be presented with the new T&Cs and henceforth not be troubled by that irritating demand that takes you to the wrong place. However, not only is the same red flag still showing against the account, but now the Apple TV is no longer part of your HomeKit setup and that can ONLY be set up again using, you guessed it, an iPhone running under that same account. However, the good news is that in this case there is no apparent requirement that the iDevice used to do this is running ?OS 16. The bad news is that using an iPhone running iOS 15 seems at first to be working, but the Apple TV simply goes into some perpetual loop with a spinning daisy wheel and when you eventually back out of that (using the Menu button), you'll see that 'Home' is still not set up. But…

After sleeping for a few hours, on waking the Apple TV I found no more red flag notifications about more set up required for any accounts and even the Home(Kit) setup has now in fact miraculously been completed. However, at the top of each AppleTV account's page it still shows at the top

'Finish Signing In with iPhone'

even when there is no red notification flag indicating something actually needs to be done. So is it actually complete or does it still require something more? Needless to say, clicking that line above takes you to where it asks you to complete setup using an iPhone/iPad (?OS 16 only) and NO manual option. But since there was no red flag, does it really need anything? Talk about 'ambiguous'.

So to sum up, it's a complete and utter mess. If you've not yet updated to tvOS 16 and don't have another iDevice running ?OS 16 for each of the AppleTV accounts, I'd suggest you don't update. Wait until these major bugs have been quashed and save your hair.

I took this up with Apple who admitted they are seeing many reports of such behaviour, so they are aware of it, but the not so great news is that we'll just have to wait for a tvOS update to fix it and there's an iOS update to release first. Fortunately, in the meantime, at least the AppleTV can still be used to watch TV.

I didn’t need to configure any accounts after upgrading to tvOS 16. Two family members show up in the control center, but I haven’t tried switching to them and haven’t been pestered to add them.

I actually had massive issues with ios16. It would load every app but when you go and hit play the video takes forever to load. It didn’t matter what app you used. I had to fast forward a bit for it to kickstart. Comcast came twice to fix the internet issues. I also installed a fresh copy of ios16 with nothing coming over.

Went to the Apple Store it worked. I figured out after every reboot it worked for a bit then go back to the same issues. Then I sent it to apple. The agent was like yeah. A lot of software issues.

I just got my replacement and it’s on ios15.6. It works like butter and I don’t want to update lol

I went away for a few days. tvOS saved up all the password request nags for my partners account. So when I came back it repeatedly re-prompted dozens of times, each time interrupting playback. Each time I selected Not Now, but is kept coming back. Really irritating.

This was exactly my experience with tvOS 15 when it released last year. I had to wait until 15.3 for video streaming to improve. I know better than to download tvOS 16 this year. Maybe in a few .1 releases but there is really no reason to rush this year for me. No must-have new feature

I am not sure if it's the tvOS updates or apps getting worse, but my last gen 4k Apple TV is just struggling to keep video streams playing while all the other devices on the network are fine.

I just wish there was an easy way to stop the gray full-screen nags telling me to update to the latest operating version of tvOS. Very irritating. And intrusive. You might say that it violates my privacy.

We have two Apple TV 4K's, 2021 variety. One got updated to tvOS 16. Lots of issues. The other is not updated and on 15.6. Almost never an issue, aside from those gray update screens. Must be a coincidence.

I upgraded on a 1st gen 4k and I regret it. I know better than to upgrade on first release. My fault. I have a judder that occurs after being on for 24-36 hours. Only fix is to restart it.

With tvOS 16.1, the screen savers are bleeding through to the Apple TV background when in dark Mode. By that I mean if the screen saver is bright green, the Home Screen and setting background will be green. If the screensaver is blue, the background will be blue. I’ve never seen that before. It’s annoying.

This has been the case for years. It's not new with tvOS 16 or 16.1. Who knows why Apple does this. It almost seems intentional except it doesn't happen 100% of the time. If you change the current screensaver, it fixes it.

Having seen no new posts about tvOS 16.1 in a while I figured it would be safe to upgrade my 2015 Apple TV HD. Am I glad I did. My Apple TV is much more responsive and I find that apps are slightly snappier too. They’ve done a good job

16.1 has NOT fixed the problem introduced in tvOS 16 that requires a device running i(Pad)OS 16 and using the same iCloud account as its main account in order to complete that account update on the AppleTV.

The only device I have that is using the same iCloud account as the AppleTV cannot run iOS 16 and tvOS 16 has made it IMPOSSIBLE to complete that account setup (after tvOS update) as there is NO manual alternative. You HAVE to have a suitable device - i.e. the very latest AND be using that same account.

This is so utterly stupid even Apple support agreed with me, but said I just had to wait for the next update. Well, tvOS 16.1 is here and it's still exactly the same.

Is this a stupid mistake or blatant arrogance trying to force the sale of more new iDevices. I hope it's the former.
