Yes! It absolutely DID. Thanks so much for that.

has anyone tried this with the TW app on 3g or external wifi? (and was successful)

I did a few hours ago.

crossingman's .deb file not only lets the app work on a JB iPad but it also disables some of the built-in VPN/proxy detection.

So I installed and configured EasyVPN on my home Mac today, then left home with my iPad in tow:

Fantastic news... THE TWCable TV APP WORKS OVER 3G NOW:

As you can see, the picture quality is excellent. It does pause a bit to "reload" every so often. And thankfully I am grandfathered in with unlimited AT&T data!

Somewhat surprisingly however, it does not (yet?) work over external WiFi:

I have emailed these details to crossingman.

So lets all have high hopes and fingers crossed (heh) that crossingman finds this additional proxy detection code to disable. I'm sure it will work a LOT better over WiFi. Not everyone has unlimited 3G data. And WiFi would of course offer more bandwidth so the video probably wouldn't pause and reload so often. Still, I consider this experiment a success. Let's root for crossingman to make it even better.

Have at it! Enjoy!

I'm glad that link helped you, I wish I had a mac and could set up easy VPN but I'm on Windows 7 and I've tried getting Open VPN to work with no success.

I'm also on a grandfathered att 3g plan and would love to use this.

Can you post your settings? Like what domain did you use?

Question the this great developer: Can you make cablevision app to work over VPN? That would be awesome for most people.

Can you post your settings? Like what domain did you use?

^what he said... thanks! :)

I followed the tutorial here to a "T." Very straightforward and easy. The only thing I set differently was the "search domain." Instead of "optimum.net" I put "socal.rr.com" -- and I got that by going to one of my home Macs, checking to see what was auto-entered for my broadband connection, under DNS settings (under System Preferences -> Advanced.)

As I mentioned earlier, the VPN connection (along with the FakeTimeWarner hack in Cydia) lets me use this app on my jailbroken iPad v1 when connecting via 3G.

It does NOT, however, work over external WiFi. I have tested this on various WiFi networks (connecting first to my home network via VPN) and I consistently get this error:

image_4-1-20110711-143604.jpg

Heck, I get it even when on my own WiFi network. (To be clear, it all works fine at home when VPN is off.) So when WiFi is on, the app is still checking for the VPN state and refusing to work when it's on, too. I'm going to submit this feedback to the FakeTimeWarner developer, Adrian Hamelink, and see if he's got any more ideas.

I can confirm that it does not work on wifi on my iPad 2 as well. I cannot confirm 3G because I don't have a sim card in my iPad.

Don't update!!

V1.0.2008 -TW app
iPad 2 JB 4.3.3

I was too lazy to update. Everything still works fine. I guess from what I'm hearing, if you take the 2.0 update you'll get blacklisted. But what if I restore my iPad to a non-JB state? Am I forever banned? This can't be... You know what... This is TW.... They are evil and i wouldn't put it past them. I would suggest not updating until our smart jailbreaking buddies figure out how to crack 2.0 and stop this blacklisting.

Actually let me clarify myself. I have a jailbroken iPad 2 and when installing version 2 of the TW app it doesn't work. But when i patch it with the hack from Cydia, it works as expected. The part that doesn't work for me is the VPN over wifi outside of my home network. I wasn't able to test out if it works over 3G since i don't have a sim card for my iPad.

It looks like TM just updated their app to 2.0.1...i wonder if they put in some other BS check for JB ipads...has anyone updated it yet?

I just did the upgrade. I uninstalled the FakeTimeWarner hack, then upgraded the Time Warner app through the App Store on my iPad 2. I ran the app and it still gives the jailbreak message. I then re-installed FakeTimeWarner v. 1.0 through Cydia and ran the Time Warner App and it works. So far, so good.

Thanks for taking the leap. After reading your post, I too upgraded to version 2.0.1 on my iPad v1. Just left the FakeTimeWarner hack installed though. Didn't bother to uninstall. And the new app works just as well as it did before.

I'll test out connections from external locations (3G and WiFi) later on today.

I will also note that even though I subscribe to all TV channels, I am still missing about 20-30 on my iPad that I should be receiving (mostly from the Choice Tier.) I don't think this has anything to do with the hack, or the jailbreak, or even my TWC account per se, I think this is a widespread issue on TWC's end, that hopefully they'll resolve soon.

I bit the bullet and installed the 2.0.2 update of TWCable TV on my jailbroken iPad 1 today.

The only change listed for this update is the rather ominous "Minor change to login screen" -- but I went for it anyway.

Once installed in iTunes, it shows up as version 2.0.3923.

I am happy to report that with the "FakeTimeWarner" hack installed, it launches and works fine. I am watching TV on it right now.

I tested it further by disabling the FakeTimeWarner hack (did so using SBSettings, it's a Mobile Substrate add-on) and respringing. Then I tried to launch TWCable TV app... and got the "we hate freedom and we hate jailbreakers" screen.

So I enabled FakeTimeWarner, resprung, and tried to launch it again... and now it works again.

So it appears we're safe. For now.

I will also add that after numerous (and I mean numerous) calls to higher level tech support at TWC, I *finally* am seeing all the channels I believe I should be seeing on the iPad app. Whereas previously I was only seeing about 40... even though the website about the iPad app says there are ~100, and I am paying for all the relevant "tiers" (ie: channel package subscriptions)... now I am seeing 79. The ones I am missing are from other regions or not available in my area or part of some other tier.

Anyway, I'm not rocking the boat further... happy it's working at all. I'm always scared to deal with TWC, not because of the jailbreak thing but because the last time I tried to add more channels to my cable subscription, it resulted in my losing ALL my channels for two weeks and I had to have techs over here day after day, none of them knowing their asses from their elbows, and wasting lots of time and energy doing nothing.

Hope this helps.

I can confidently report, there is no such blacklisting going on. I have tested this thoroughly, launching the app with no FakeTimeWarner hack enabled, and getting the jailbreak error (of course)... and then launching the app WITH the hack, and getting in just fine.

As it turns out, my previous issues had nothing to do with "blacklisting because of a JB iPad." It had something to do with authorization on my TWC account... some M-Card thing (I have a TiVo and don't use the TWC cable box.) Once the CSR cleaned up my account, the iPad app started working again. And since then, as I mentioned above, I can toggle back and forth with FakeTimeWarner and don't get that same "authorization" error again. I've also read about folk getting the authorization error, long before the TWCable app started JB detection. It's happened to people whose iPads aren't even jailbroken. It's just an issue with TWC and has nothing to do with the jailbreak.

Now, I'm not saying TWC won't ever crack down further, be more aggressive, come up with some counter-strike against FakeTimeWarner... who knows, TWC is evil... but for now, it appears that we're safe with the current version of the app.

Lastly for now...

With FakeTimeWarner installed, I also am able to use this app and watch live TV when I am away from home -- over 3G -- so long as I connect via the iPad's VPN connection to my home network first. It's not a very good experience though. While the PQ looks good, and the audio is in sync... every 20-30 seconds it pauses and says "loading..." (Sometimes it just goes to a "Channel Load Error.") It's probably because this video is optimized for a home WiFi connection; I suspect it's just not able to deal with the thinner pipe of 3G. This is annoying enough that I'll likely never use it this way.

Strangely enough, when I try to do the same thing with external WiFi, say, at a friend's house (which you'd think would work better, since it's faster than 3G) I can't watch anything at all. I'll connect via VPN first, and then, when I try to load this app, I get this error: "Authorization failed: Please disable VPN in the iPad settings menu, then restart TWCable TV™."

Odd that I get this when on WiFi but not on 3G. Anyway, I'll cross my fingers that one day TWCable will be more lenient about this, or that FakeTimeWarner gets updated to allow for VPN connections over external WiFi as well.

Jumping into this thread...hopefully we can figure out how to get the app working with VPN enabled over WiFi.

I tried connecting my iPhone to my VPN and then tethering my iPad to my iPhone, but that didn't work either.

I'm wondering as a work-around if there is a way to trick our iPads into thinking they are on 3G when we're connected via WiFi.

Interesting thought; sort of like a reverse My3G, huh?

I'd rather FakeTimeWarner just tweak the TWCable TV app to stop checking if the (requisite) VPN switch is on...

Hi everybody,
I'm Adrian (Crossingman). I created FTW as soon as I read on blogs, that the app was blocking jailbroken devices. I myself live in Switzerland. I have no way to test whether the VPN bypassing part of my tweak was working. I have here an updated file, which I hope should solve the problems you are all having with my app. http://db.tt/85ASjZe
It would be great if someone here could test: on their home network, on 3G and on remote Wifi.
Thank you everyone for using my app

Adrian

Thank you so much for your continued work on this. Very impressive that you're able to do this at all considering you are in Switzerland without a TWC account of your own to test.

I tried this new version and unfortunately still got the same error when trying to use this app over WiFi with VPN enabled. It says "Authorization failed: Please disable VPN."
