But in absolutely no way different from how it was when you bought it. Enjoy. It will be good for a while.

Chin up, bud! Not outdated, just not the top model anymore. Don't let that stop you from getting the best of what you already own!

What's funny is that I was halfway feeling that way, and halfway fishing for comments because it was only a matter of time before someone said that. But you guys are right, and I actually feel more ok about it than before. :D

Not a bad idea by Apple. I'm not sure that I really get changing things for an A6 and Lightning connector, but I don't run things. If the Lightning connector allows for much faster charging, then it might be a huge deal. But since it goes to USB 2 ports, it probably won't make much difference.

As for the name, the new new iPad!

Cook has lost the plot with this decision

A mid cycle design change? To be released in November? The iPad event is four/five months away, why screw new iPad owners now with this small redesign?

I didn't pay £649 for my iPad to have it replaced within 6 months with the same model but with a newer dock port. Yes, I know it still does everything I bought it to do, etc etc etc but it's the principle.

Preach.

Every product gets updated, and some people get caught buying at the wrong times due to unpredictable updates. There is no principle.

If Apple looked at each update as "screwing" previous customers, they wouldn't be producing many updates at all.

UK markets will buy more cellular iPads now that the new version will support their LTE networks. That + the holiday season upcoming = massive amounts of sales. This is an extremely good update, and timed right.

There is ONE LTE/4G network in the UK right now and it's in it's infancy. The other carriers will battle it out for their share of the spectrum and roll it out in due course but no date is set. 4G is not a selling point in the UK, not yet. Trust me, I'm from there.

I don't see the annual update as screwing customers, people who follow Apple know the script and when to buy/not to buy. I held off until the Third Generation before purchasing an iPad, but didn't expect it to be replaced within 6 months of buying it. If its only a Lightning Port then I'm fine with that, but if an A6 and/or IGZO display appears alongside it, I will be rightly pissed.

The so-called new iPad is looking more and more like what it actually is, especially with this news/rumour.

"The iPad 2, now with Retina Display". A piece of **** stop gap device to fill the coffers.

"So how will I know if I have the NEW New iPad or the OLD New iPad? Will they still offer the OLD OLD iPad? {referring to the iPad 2}".

It amazes me how people got the naming entirely wrog and they keep coming up with this "new new iPad" As a matter of fact, New was never part of the name. I bought the new iPad and on dhe day one and on the box it didn't say "The new iPad" but just "iPad" Apple was simply referring to it as a new product. Why are people assumning the that the third generation iPad was called the new iPad? Why don't people get confused when the new iMacs or Macbooks are released?

Well, I'm pretty satisfied with this rumor as I've been planning to upgrade my iPad 2 for some time now (and the iPad mini may not quite do it for me). Then again, for every one of me who's excited for the spec bump, there are two "new iPad" owners that are probably shaking their fists over this.

I'm hoping they go ahead and put the A6 in there. I mean, really, why not?

GOOD. Maybe now they can finally start getting out of this 12-month redesign cycle they and their customers are locked into. Apple should make updates to the iPad and iPhone when they an addition worthy of an update. They don't update the iMac's and Macbook's every 12 months because there's no reason to. They do spec bumps when it's necessary and there's no reason the iPhone or iPad should be different.

I'm totally with you that there should not be a SET redesign cycle, and updates should be done only when warranted by tangible, worthy/real improvements. But it seems the marketplace DEMANDS these 'clockwork' ~12month releases, and if you have any doubts about that, read some of the vitriolic comments on this and other websites about no iMac refresh for 500+ days; how dare APPLE!

There are some really good reasons for a more elaborate tweak though. For example:
  1. The lightening connector needs support. The faster Apple gets people moved to the standard the faster they can get on with other things.
  2. If the Sharp displays are indeed ready they would offer up a significant power savings which leads to longer battery life. This leads to marketing possibilities.
  3. Microsoft is coming out with their product, Apples ability to market new and improved devices against MS hardware is a positive thing. Even if the improvements are minor, people respond to new and Improved.
  4. If Apple does go A6 they will effectively be able to outperform most MS tablets with very good battery life. Not just ARM based MS tablets but even ATOM based tablets. Putting MS in the back seat performance wise would truly destroy any initiative they may have. It is bit of a brutal approach to business but if Apple can trash MS launch it could put MS tablet adoption behind by years.
  5. The potential for better and more universal LTE support should not be dismissed. apple coming up short here has been a problem in some countries.
  6. Christmas is coming. This should be self explanatory.
  7. A major revision at this time could potentially double performance of the iPad. This is huge and frankly as much as I love my iPad 3 it could use a performance boost. At this time it looks like a doubling of performance would be a no brainer for A6.
  8. Disruption of the rest of the competition. Why let the competition make progress against you.

Oh I think it is the perfect time. Hit the market right before MS introduces their hardware and right before the holiday shopping season with a device that no one can touch. Brilliant!

One of the more astute observations, I've read on MacRumors. You make an absolutely compelling argument for an updated iPad. Can't decide which of your 8 points is the more convincing one; it's a toss-up. Numbers 3,4,5,7 & 8 stand out in my mind.

If you want to stay at the 'leading edge', you must improve and/or innovate, or be left behind and crushed by the competition. As the saying goes: Timing is Everything! :)

Because if they improve screen, battery, and processor what does it leave for the iPad 4 in 5 months time, assuming they don't just shift timeline completely.

If this is true, I was certainly completely wrong in my predictions. I would never have guessed that they would screw with their production lines for such a minor tweak ~ 5 months before a full iPad refresh.

That's why some people, myself included, believe that if it's true, this will be more than just changing the connector. Also, if Apple wanted to move their iPad release from March to October, to take advantage of the holidays, would they wait one more year (Oct. 2013) or move it up to this month? It could just be a product release shift that is coinciding with a new tech shift (lightning connector).

I've always said, long before this news, that the new iPad should have had the A6. There is no way it wasn't ready, but the new iPad was the first iPad to not get the new chipset before the latest iPhone.

iPad got the A4 then the iPhone 4 was released. iPad 2 got the A5 then the 4S got it. New iPad? A5X ... oooooh.

Switching to lightning connector makes sense in the iPad, that way their whole (most) mobile line can switch to lightning in the same year. Improved interior would be nice, does it still over heat with the retina display?

It never over-heated with the retina display. It runs slightly hotter than iPad 2 and cooler than the high-end competition. I own one and it is absolutely fine. My iPhone 4S runs hotter.

ALSO, I am guessing the iPad 4 comes in June at WWDC.

No Thanx to the new connector. If Thunderbolt is any indication it will take YEARS for accessories to catch up. Oh wait, for $99 you can buy the Apple proprietary adapter:eek:

I just bought a new iPad about half-a-month ago. Doesn't Apple allow an upgrade to the newer model if it's within a month of a new one?

I bought two new iPads in during the last two weeks one week after the other. I am confident that new refresh never makes this outdated considering the downgrades (potentially reduce the battery size, reduce horse power to compensate loss of battery, display is fantastic and I do not wish to buy Sharp displays for my iPads instead I prefer Samsung or LG).

I felt like I do not wish to miss the new iPad in the current form before it gets refreshed.

wouldn't they have also made a resigned iPhone 4S with a lightning connector?

No because the iPhone 5 has the new connector. So if you want the new connector you buy the iPhone 5. Apple will keep selling the 4 and 4s to the folks that don’t “need” the latest and greatest, the folks that will NOT upgrade their iPads or phones every year.

The current iPad has an old connector you can't buy an iPad today with the new connector. So they need to update the connector ASAP!!

THINK FOR A SEC.

IF you DO NOT own an iPad but “DO” own an iPhone 5 you may “NOT” buy an iPad until they change the connector.

If they wait to change the iPad connector sales may slump for the current iPad. Many people KNOW that whenever the next update is, it will have the new connector. So why would someone with an iPhone 5 want to buy the current iPad when they know they can wait till Feb for the same connector.

The connector is a BIG deal. Going forward the connector you have will affect you more than the look and specs of the product. So MORE people will refrain from buying the iPad over the connector then they would for a slight design change or stat bump.

APPLE WILL BE DUMB NOT TO UPDATE THE CONNECTOR.

THEY NEED TO KEEP THE EXACT SAME IPAD BUT CHANGE THE CONNECTOR.

Apple is not screwing anybody over. You bought a new iPad, you received the new Ipad. Works like it always has, no principle needed.

Its annoying enough hearing people complain about refreshes taking too long, now its people complaining about its too soon.

If Apple does a mid-life refresh, I would pass and for an iPad with a worthwhile upgrade.

As a shareholder and iPad 3 owner I sure hope Apple releases a fully revamped iPad lineup. Stop selling the 3 and the 2 and unleash the mini and the iPad 4 (both with lightning) just as Microsoft launches Surface and just before Christmas.

I have no problem with my bought-on-launch-day iPad 3. I use HDMI with iPad and so far we have no Lightning HDMI adapter. I will switch to lightning next year. For now, I am good and I would love to see Apple have a fully-refreshed lineup for the holidays and just in time for Surface.
