No because the iPhone 5 has the new connector. So if you want the new connector you buy the iPhone 5. Apple will keep selling the 4 and 4s to the folks that don’t “need” the latest and greatest, the folks that will NOT upgrade their iPads or phones every year.

The current iPad has an old connector you can't buy an iPad today with the new connector. So they need to update the connector ASAP!!

THINK FOR A SEC.

IF you DO NOT own an iPad but “DO” own an iPhone 5 you may “NOT” buy an iPad until they change the connector.

If they wait to change the iPad connector sales may slump for the current iPad. Many people KNOW that whenever the next update is, it will have the new connector. So why would someone with an iPhone 5 want to buy the current iPad when they know they can wait till Feb for the same connector.

The connector is a BIG deal. Going forward the connector you have will affect you more than the look and specs of the product. So MORE people will refrain from buying the iPad over the connector then they would for a slight design change or stat bump.

APPLE WILL BE DUMB NOT TO UPDATE THE CONNECTOR.

THEY NEED TO KEEP THE EXACT SAME IPAD BUT CHANGE THE CONNECTOR.

The connector is only a big deal if you have a ton of third party accessories that use the 30-pin dock connector. Otherwise, it doesn't matter at all. I own a first generation iPad and I have a fifth Generation iPod touch on its way here. The fact that the latter takes a different connector than the former only means that the additional cable that I had for the fourth gen iPod touch that I sold to buy the fifth gen will be dedicated solely to my iPad. No biggie. It's not like Apple isn't using the same chargers for iPods/iPhones and iPads (respectively) that they were doing for the few years leading up to the lightening connector announcement.

Not me for one. To me, the whole point of being an early adopter is that you get to enjoy said device that much earlier, compared to someone else who holds out for an upgraded version. Sure, the latter eventually gets a better gadget, but he is also not enjoying a similar device during those months spent waiting.

I got my ipad3 in March on launch day. Till this day, that has been 7 months of sheer awesomeness - using it for teaching in my classroom, mirroring it via apple tv, and other cool stuff in general. If I had held out till October, that would have been 7 months of not being able to do all this.

And however they update their ipad next week, I am still going to enjoy and use my ipad. Would I appreciate a thinner, lighter version with 4G? Sure. Would it kill me not to have these features? Certainly not.

To me, all these gripes just reek of childish selfishness. You don't have the latest gadget, are not willing to upgrade to it, and don't want others to enjoy them either?

Fair enough. Would you say this to the same Apple-fans who constantly say that Android phones are easily outdated by new hardware?

Just asking.

As a shareholder and iPad 3 owner I sure hope Apple releases a fully revamped iPad lineup. Stop selling the 3 and the 2 and unleash the mini and the iPad 4 (both with lightning) just as Microsoft launches Surface and just before Christmas.

I have no problem with my bought-on-launch-day iPad 3. I use HDMI with iPad and so far we have no Lightning HDMI adapter. I will switch to lightning next year. For now, I am good and I would love to see Apple have a fully-refreshed lineup for the holidays and just in time for Surface.

I'd think that even as a shareholder, you'd have a problem with Apple updating the full-sized iPad from third to fourth generation only seven months after the third generation was released. Such a quick turnover for such an expensive product that already has such a short software support lifespan (April 2010 to September 2012 for the first gen; presumably similar for the iPad 2) would not reflect well, Microsoft Surface launch or not.

The only way they would do this, is if they will get rid of the March update and update both the iPads in October from now on... Which I hope is not the case!

Apple doesnt have a choice. People like me will upgrade and people who want to wait will wait.

If the rumor for heavy ipad redesign is true then ipad mini wont cannibalize new ipad sales but it will open new market share for Apple :D

Really hope it's updated! The current iPad is not ideal due to A5, heat and weight. Bring it on!!

Cook has lost the plot with this decision

A mid cycle design change? To be released in November? The iPad event is four/five months away, why screw new iPad owners now with this small redesign?

I didn't pay £649 for my iPad to have it replaced within 6 months with the same model but with a newer dock port. Yes, I know it still does everything I bought it to do, etc etc etc but it's the principle.

There are no rules to say it can only be updated once per year. If it bothers you so much not having the "latest and greatest" - sell it! ASAP. If Apple have all te tools to make a better iPad now they should not wait. It will sell regardless!

Did it ever? I can't say I even notice it anymore now that the overblown news cycle has passed. And I use some pretty cpu/gpu intensive apps and games on it.

And if you use a back cover like I do, you won't notice the heat at all. It's really a nonissue for the vast majority of users.

It still sucks for those who bought the 'New iPad' not too long ago..

I have a friend that bought one a week ago. He's going to lose a bunch of money when he tries to sell it.

If he bought it a week ago why is he even thinking of selling it?

What???

The iPad 3 was released just over 7 months ago: March 7. Now, a new version is being made? The rumours were right[again]. This makes no sense. There introducing new versions faster than ever before.

This ticks me off bcuz I just got the iPad 3 for my wife in June. Don't they realize that if they keep this up, people who buy their iPad and iPhones will feel very alienated? What's next, a "refreshed" iPad every 3 months? I believe more and more people will say forget it. They will go with the competitors tablet where they know it won't be "refreshed" that quick before it becomes "outdated".

I have a new ipad. How am I being screwed? Works just as well as it did when I bought it. Is something gonna happen to it next week? No.

How will this affect your ipad? How does this make a competitors tablet better because they arent updated as often? Strange logic.

Apple WILL update it with the following:

Better display, A6 processor, new connector

WHY: To buy time!

Apple's products are slowly reaching the point where there will be NO more revolutionary updates. By doing a minor update next week, they will be able to wait a year before the real next iPad is released.

I guess this is all the updates that they prob wanted for the new ipad originally but didnt have It all ready in time. Who says the will update the next one in march? Maybe they have plans for the next generation that wont be ready until summer and they are just buying more time.

I bought an iPad "4G" and was told by two Apple stores that it was 4G for the UK.

Hopefully Apple will get it right this time.

Very unhappy with Apple over the original 4G deceit.

I'm not really buying this. What will 2013 bring to us if they do a whole line-up refresh? Just a Mac Pro and an iPhone? Technology wise, it would be interesting and somewhat nice. Business wise, its a false move to make.

I knew the new new iPad would be the new news!

Will this new new iPad change the old "new" iPad to the new "old" iPad?

For the sake of discussion, the original iPad3 will have depreciated a lot since the new one (will be out). More importantly, we easily could've waited for the newer "refreshed" iPad 3.

Other competitors typically introduce a new device (upgrade their line) about once a year. Maybe sometime sooner. Apple hasn't played that game before. No matter what, the iPad was always "in" until the new model came out. At least with most of the tablet competitors, you have more flexibility with their tablets, and of course, they're priced less than the iPad.

Welcome to the world of iToys! Your device is capable! But you need a new one anyway! Because Apple says so!

Okay fine, I'll buy it...on what authority do you know Apple is saying so?..actually never mind, I'll still buy it.

If you have "disposable" income and you have nothing better to do but surf Apple info, you might as well keep it up. I get killer resale value for all my stuff on kijiji so wtf. Maybe, as some sort of irony, I'll have no retirement savings after spending it all on Apple and I'll be a senior citizen working retail...at an Apple store. Insert point here: Love the lightning connector (obviously it was necessary if you look at the iP5), welcome it for mild update on iPad (which I will skip out on).

Next week - New iPad with new connector.

Two months later - ''Oh, we forgot to add the new redesigned painted interior of the 3.5mm jack, it's the most amazing 3.5mm jack since the 3.5mm jack''.

I hope they're not planning to do this with every iDevice.

Damn, owned for 7 months and outdated already. :(

Think of the people who only bought it a month or so ago. The "New iPad" isn't very old. Most people aren't able to get one immediately, so wait for it to hit their local retail store. Far less than 7 months usage.

I do admit, I'd be very disappointed if an update large iPad is released so soon. That's very un-Apple like. With the iPad, sometimes it does feel that we're beta testers for the product, they update it so quickly!

My mother bought herself an iPad 2 earlier this year (her first step in to computing) and she was stunned a new model was released a few weeks later, with better screen etc. She'll be more stunned another new one is announced before the end of the year!
