Yeah...right now it is a niche seemingly specific to developers and people who begrudge Elon Musk for one reason or another. As a replacement for Twitter it is not even remotely close to something that's viable to the masses, myself included, as a replacement for being a news, sports & political aggregator.
“for one reason or another”—hmm…

With today's news of the reinstatement of certain accounts, my Twitter accounts have been deactivated. Sad day – I've been on Twitter since 2008. (I was in high school!)

It's the first place I went when anything happened in the world and I wanted more info and quick. I guess Reddit will fulfill that need now? Just not the same.

That being said, hit me up at fullbug5150@mastodon.social :) Excited for Ivory.

Not really into Mastodon but I'm curious to see how Bluesky or Nostr (not even sure what that is yet) pans out. I can see them making Bluesky easy to use, but Nostr seems confusing and in very early stages of use, and I've heard Mastodon is a bit confusing and I don't see the branding taking it far as of yet.

One thing is for sure tho, I've been using Twitter for over 10 years and it's never felt so dull, both for me and everyone I've followed.

You can't be banned from Mastodon, you can be banned from a particular instance, if the mods decide you have violated their instance-specific terms of service.

More effective content moderation was one of the primary design goals of Mastodon, designed to cater to users who absolutely don't want to read posts from users with conflicting view points. That's just the history of the protocol.

In your case, maybe your first post was about how great Macs are, but you had signed up on an account from @pcusers.social, who knows...
Yea this sounds similar to Reddit. Some subreddits have weird mods. Some Orville people were getting banned left and right unecessarily. So they made their own Subreddit, and most fled there.

I used to use TweetBot and it was excellent. Sucks that it had to go, and without any warning. But when you are building an entire app on the back of a platform that isn’t yours at all, it can happen unfortunately.

I tried Mastodon for a bit, even had my own instance (wow do those hog data for every person you follow, not efficient at all) but it’s just not useful for me. Happy some internet people found a platform and now a polished app they can use with it.

Like others above have mentioned, all of these networks will end up like MySpace and Friendster. Doesn’t matter how popular they have been or will be. It’s just inevitable. Enjoy what you enjoy to use today, much better than complaining about who owns what, and why, etc.

Mastodon is great for tech circles. It just hasn't had much uptake in media or political circles. It is a good place to follow various creators.

I'm a big fan of Mastodon's moderation policy. Every community gets to set their own moderation rules.

Ice Cubes is another great Mastodon client. There are some bugs, but it is great for a 1 week old client. The iPad version works decent on Mac.

I may be interested in subscribing to Ivory when the Mac version is released.
Sounds like Reddit. The land of moderators with complexes.

It is astounding how entitled some individuals are when it comes to apps.

While many are supportive and recognise talented developers who deserve support, there are those who will lash out, insult, and berate those who simply want to earn a living through their full-time jobs creating, designing, and maintaining these apps by charging a minimal annual fee equivalent to a few cups of coffee.

Yeah no thanks. Also, amazing they launched a new app like days after their old one was obsoleted. They really must not have to put any effort in at all.
Maybe learn a little before passing judgement? Ivory has been in beta for many months, and leverages a lot of Tapbots’ existing Tweetbot code, and they were getting close to release anyway - the beta testers were quite happy with it. When Elon recently cut off all other Twitter apps with zero notice - his latest in a long series of dick moves - the Tapbots developers redoubled their efforts to get Ivory out the door ASAP.

Humanity’s exhaustion with this hamster wheel is inevitable. Every social platform that exists today will become MySpace and new apps will take the space to remind users to go get some fresh air and visit from real friends.
Or their upcoming VR/AR friends with goggles to escape reality more effectively...

Nope that’s not true!
The downside of subscriptions is, usually the software(which was already payed multiple times) stops working once you cancel the subscription. That’s why I dislike subscriptions.

While when you buy software and buy their updates, the software continues to work as long nothing special changes.

There are a few subscription types that feature freezes and continues to work if you cancel it, but most subscriptions don’t do this, because it’s more convenient to continue leeching users by adding minor improvements.

Well, and if Developers like e.g. Affinity manages to survive, be successful, and sell their “very complex” software normally without subscriptions, others should be able, too.

I wonder how all these devs survived before Apple started to push subscriptions, they must have been all living on skid row.

Perhaps. I’m happily a member of a bunch of subreddits. Most of them are quite civilized - often more so than MacRumors.
And the beauty is when you find an overbearing mod, Unjoin and find another. And a lot of the time there is another someone made who also didn't like that mod, and people followed

crazy, almost like developers need to make a living in order to continue iterating on the apps they make for one of the most popular phones on the market
crazy, almost like developers should build a finished product and sell other versions of said product letting the user decide if it’s worth upgrading.

You know like how it’s always been done in the past.

There is nothing “ongoing” this isn’t like Dropbox or a streaming platform. It’s an app with an api to the service. If there are worthy updates I’d pay. But subscription for a tweet app? Get out of here.
